DEYA RAMSDEN, ‘Cave Rabbits in Love’, fabric & sequin stitched/collage. IMAGE/COURTESY: BEEBOP GALLERY
Beebop Galley specializes in offering unknown artists their first solo shows in New York. This is the gallery’s 4th show.
DEYA RAMSDEN, recently relocated to BROOKLYN, from Oregon.
“Her eclectic and playful multi media works are united by a sense of experimentation. Using fabric, paper, plastic, clay and metal, Deya crochets, weaves and sews for us a fantastical world of both underwater and land walking creatures alongside of sculptures of environments in which these creatures might frolic . . .
. . . ‘Dome City’ is a paper sculpture made while “under the influence of the city” of New York, tiny drawings stacked upon each other with a blue inner glow at the center. Its protrusion from the wall pulls the viewer in to join the city and inspect the individuality of the drawings . . . and,
Deya has woven giant ‘Jellyfish’ in plastic, from plastic bags which float above, daring the viewer to play in the tentacles.
Born and raised in Virginia, Deya is a self-taught artist who has shown work at Nature in Charlottesville, Nocturnal and the Handmade Bazaar in Portland, as well as HaNnA Gallery in Tokyo.”

UP-DATE: MONDAY MARCH 3, 2008 – 5:47 PM
Frankie’s soiree for DEYA was just as fun – as we thought it – would be – here’s some pix:

PORTS BISHOP, at the DEYA RAMSDEM opening. He actually bought that doll.
Ports is really stoked about the upcoming DARK FAIR . . or the DARK SHOW, as a lot of people are calling it. He is going to be presenting – a photo booth – in an electricity-less room – !! as one of the featured projects.

Ports introduced us to, from left, MEGHA GUPTA, and SOPHIA DIXON, who are in the inaugural show at – mountain fold – YU YUMAGACHI’S new gallery. The show, called ‘shadows in the Never-Never’, has just ended, it ran JAN 11 – FEB 29, 2008. ANTONIA DIXON was also in this mountain fold show.

SOPHIA DIXON is also, the curator of a currently running – (FEB 1 – MARCH 23, 2008) group show, called – ‘mixed emotions’ – in BROOKLYN, at BROOKLYN FIRE PROOF – which has garnered some street buzz. ERIKA SOMYGI has some work in the show.
Founded in 1998, by BURR DODD – BROOKLYN FIRE PROOF is an “environment for emerging artists” with an exhibition space, a performance space, residency workshop programs, and more.

also, at the DEYA RAMSDEN opening – KELIE BOWMAN and STO – of CINDERS. Kelie and Sto are leaving for Philadelphia, this week – to put on a big show – ‘SPACING OUT’ – curated by Cinders Gallery – at SPACE 1026 !!
so they are pretty stoked, too. some of the artists in their line-up: DIANE BARCELOWSKY (!!), MATT FURIE (!!), KEVIN HOOYMAN (!!), and SHAWN REED (!!) – the opening is – this FRIDAY, MARCH 7, 2008 – 7-11PM – that’s gonna be one big – par-tay !! – that’s, for sure. if you’re in Philly – don’t miss it.

MOLLY McGARRITY, Frankie’s childhood pal. (they grew up in Pennsylvania) – if you’ve also noticed that MACY’S advertising graphics – have gone up at least 100 notches – she might be why. She’s the new Senior Art Director at MACY’S CORPORATE MARKETING DIVISION.

ANDY MEERON had work in th e ‘WU-TANG’ GOOGOLPLEX show at GBE’s Passerby…..

ANDY HERSHEY, who used to live at 234 HURON, with, COLIN LANGENUS (of USA IS A MONSTER) at the DEYA RAMSDEN opening.

at one point in the evening – NICK KUSZYK . . , or Sheeesh – as his solo musical project is called – played – in a set called . . ‘METEOR’.

COLIN LANGENUS – holds up ‘METEOR’ – the limited edition poster, NICK KUSZYK made to celebrate the evening, and which, in fact – caught the magic white heat – of the evening.

covering a speaker, the original speaker cover made by FRANKIE MARTIN, from her debut solo show – ‘AIRBRAINS’ – way back in the day, at LITTLE CAKES !!!

and by special request, DEYA RAMSDEN and FRANKIE MARTIN . . .
BYE the way – FRANKIE’S all psyched, too !! – turns out she is also EXHIBITING work in the upcoming SWISS INSTITUTE’S DARK FAIR – also, being called – the DARK SHOW, some people are even calling it – the GLOW-IN-THE-DARK SHOW !! – one things for certain, no matter how many nicknames it acquires – everybody wants to be in it !! Frankie says: Xavier LePLae, a friend of Tyson Reeder’s – “definitely inspired the whole thing.”

want to share their “it’s freezing cold winter” (?!!) – ‘stockings’ = with ya !!
(yep – that’s some kind of serious brass knuckle ‘ring’ Frankie is sporting.)

. . . we’ll close with a little – nano-art !! – tiny felt pins, made by DEYA RAMSDEN – and exhibited in ‘Sugar Free’.

pin by DEYA RAMSDEN.

AJIT CHAUHAN – ‘STARING AT THE SUN’ – OPENS – SAT MARCH 1 – 7-9PM
the show runs: MARCH 1 – APRIL 5, 2008
JACK HANLEY GALLERY – 136 WATTS ST – TRIBECA – NYC
AJIT CHAUHAN’S – New York debut – this solo show will include video, installations and drawings.
“Ajit Chauhan’s drawings evoke the tradiitional imagery of his parents’ native India with a sharp contemporary edge. Intricate, richly detailed, and delicately drawn in black and sepia ink on recycled pages, his sketches of hesitant symmetry show the hand at work. While illustrating his belief in the necessity for imperfection to enter the artistic process, Chauhan creates works that defy the notion of completion.
“His films capture rural life in remote parts of India, where he traveled frequently and extensively. Departing from narrative-driven documentary form, Chau transforms his footage into an expressive compound, in which he superposes animated drawings and juxtaposes unusual scenes, from boats bulging with oddly shaped huts to stray dogs, to faces of the idle villagers.”
– PRESS RELEASE

UP-DATE: MONDAY MARCH 3, 2008
. . . we heard some buzz that . . this guy was supposedly “the inspiration” . . behind DEVENDRA BANHART’S drawings – but – here was nothing to indicate any connection or interesting tangent – such as this – on the press release.
. . . as well, supposedly there was some “beautiful music” – our source didn’t make clear if it was even live or not – though he seemed to have heard it was “Indian”. again, there was no mention – whatsoever – of any musical performance, or sound track, of any kind on the press release.
. . . very strangely, an opinion of how interesting the show itself – was – meaning the art – didn’t accompany the brief conversation.
the gallery now seems to have a phone in place: 1-646-918-6824

MICHEL GONDRY on the set of the MARK KOSTABI – ‘NAME THAT PAINTING’ SHOW, NYC. NOV 3, 2006
PHOTO: NANCY SMITH
artist, filmmaker, and drummer, MICHEL GONDRY was not at the opening of his interactive show – ‘BE KIND REWIND’ – now up at DEITCH PROJECTS on WOOSTER ST. He was said to be in BERLIN, on business.
MICHEL GONDRY is a familiar sight on the KOSTABI show – when he is in town. Maybe he got some of the inspiration for ‘BE KIND REWIND’ from ‘NAME THAT PAINTING’ – a makeshift low budget TV ‘game show’ – if, there ever was one !!
UP-DATE: MONDAY MARCH 3, 2008
notwithstanding the recent negative review in the New York Times – SIMON CERIGO is happy to report – as he happened to pass by DEITCH PROJECTS on WOOSTER ST – this past SATURDAY – that: ” . . . the kids were flocking to make their own ‘Indie’ movies at the MICHEL GONDRY ‘BE KIND REWIND’ show”.
see: lots !! of photos – from the ‘BE KIND REWIND’ opening !!

GLENN O’BRIEN attends the PAUL McCARTHY – ‘CHOCOLATE SANTA’ – OPENING, at MACCARONE GALLERY, NYC. NOV 15, 2007
PHOTO: NANCY SMITH
before we forget, good luck to GLENN O’BRIEN – who was recently announced as the new editor of INTERVIEW, replacing INGRID SISCHY. it’s actually the new – former – editor, as SIMON CERIGO tells us that MR. O’BRIEN used to edit INTERVIEW back in the day, when it was founded, – in the late 60s, early 70s – when it was the “underground cultural bible”. Simon and Glenn cross paths often on the MARK KOSTABI – ‘NAME THAT PAINTING’ GAME SHOW (shown on public access TV here in NYC).
Most recently GLENN O’BRIEN has been co-editor (and contributer), along with MAX BLAGG, of the ‘BALD EGO’ – a fairly thick, 6 x 9 in., high production, glossy papered – collection of essays and photos on the art world.
