TRACEY EMIN – ‘ONLY GOD KNOWS I’M GOOD’
OPENING: THURS NOV 5 / 6-8 PM
SHOW RUNS: NOV 5 – DEC 19, 2009
LEHMANN MAUPIN – DOWNTOWN – 20l CHRYSTIE ST.
according to the press release – the exhibit is big – 53 works including a large-scale film projection, never-before-seen neons, and sculptures, and a collection of embroideries and monoprints. oh oh oh – they’re also shilling a big monograph – hope the show doesn’t tilt – commercial – as in, watch out for tanks, as in ‘tanking’.
on the other hand, the email invite photo, above, is great !! – so will be fun to see how it finally plays out.

TRACEY EMIN & MATT COLLISHAW – at the opening of: TRACEY EMIN – ‘I Think It’s in My Head’, LEHMANN MAUPIN,
Sept 21, 2002.
PHOTO: NANCY SMITH – ARTNET ARCHIVES
TRACEY EMIN holds some particular fondness for me – apart from her quilts & embroideries – her 2002 show at Lehmann Maupin – marked the very first moment my ‘art’ career took an abrupt turn into photo-journalism. yep, WALTER ROBINSON deemed my Emin pix – artnet worthy – and posted some of them, on what is still one of CHARLIE FINCH’S greatest essays: ‘EMINENT DOMAIN’ !!
yeah: check it out !!
besides being an exceptionally witty and, some thought, cruel at the time, piece for Charlie, let’s just say it was: right on ‘cutting’ – and, an inaugural posting for me, with special thanks to Charlie F. for brokering the deal with artnet – it also marked the unveiling of the ‘new’ REM KOLHAAS designed gallery space, for LEHMANN MAUPIN. which is still up and running, and still looking pretty good – on 26th St. in Chelsea.
UP-DATE – SAT NOV 7, 2009 – 9:33AM !!
and oh, that catalog, commercial tilt down ? – no way !! just check it out for yourself – way exquisite !!
so are the other 2 big TRACEY EMIN books on the gallery front desk !!

TRACEY EMIN – the show is great.
the opening was electric – it’s gonna hit the city like a gradual – tidal wave !!

she’s a bit hard to catch, even shy. hard to catch in motion. but, she’s the real deal.
she is . . . what a lot of other people – no names – wish they were.

wearing the key to somebody’s heart – maybe her own ?
TRACEY EMIN – in town for the opening of: ‘Only God Knows I’m Good’

TRACEY EMIN, ‘No not now’ – embroidery on light-weight cotton canvas.

all the large pieces were stitched in v black thread – onto fine cotton ‘duck’ or canvas . . . which in turn, was itself hand-stitched or really, hemmed, together into larger pieces. in baby colors.

. . . “no more fear”.

RACHEL LEHMANN, a founding partner of the gallery.
here with her husband, JEAN PIERRE LEHMANN, at the opening of TRACEY EMIN’s ‘Only God Knows I’m Good’.
LEHMANN MAUPIN DOWNTOWN.

DAVID MAUPIN, also a founding partner in the gallery.

at the opening, PAUL H-O !!
who is this man ? he brought you the wildly entertaining: ‘GUEST OF CINDY SHERMAN’. his cinematic !! – first person !! account of his ‘relationship’ with Cindy Sherman, who he meet while on a ‘gallerybeat’ assignment !!
YES !! see: JAN ALBERT REVIEWS: ‘GUEST OF CINDY SHERMAN’ – directed by PAUL H-O & TOM DONAHUE !!
and yes, watch this: PAUL H-O on YouTube !!/’Guest of Cindy Sherman’ !!
gallerybeat was a streaming video art world ‘report’ on cable t.v. – back in the day – before there was the web !!
PAUL H-O is now bringing gallerybeat back – to the future – on the web !!
check out: gallerybeat !! to-day !!

several Brit pals of Tracey’s flew in from London, to help her celebrate: including,
TRICIA RONANE and TIGGY MACONOCHIE !!

Brit collector TIGGY MACONOCHIE – has several TRACEY EMIN pieces.

back to the show – people are raving about the quilts, even people who don’t know a stitch about quilts and/or sewing !!

I wonder why ?!!
TRACEY EMIN, detail. black thread on thin cotton duck/canvas.

the LEHAMNN MAUPIN GALLERY/DOWNTOWN was put to its best use – ever.
upstairs on a thin ‘observer’ balcony – a TRACEY EMIN neon piece – casts its glow, and magic !!

opening night gallery goers contemplate a new TRACEY EMIN neon piece, apparently spellbound
by both its message & color !!

detail, neon ‘poem’ – TRACEY EMIN

“Some Crazy Fucked Up/Dog Like Hell/That’s how it feels to/LIVE without LOVE”
TRACEY EMIN, neon wall poem.
TRACEY EMIN, ‘Only God Knows I’m Good’.
LEHAMANN MAUPIN DOWNTOWN

across the room – “Only God Knows I’m Good” !!

everybody loved this piece.
TRACEY EMIN – ‘NOTHING TOUCHES’

detail, TRACEY EMIN – ‘NOTHING TOUCHES’.

the hand stitched calligraphy – was super fine. hands down. in all aspects of the word.
design & workmanship.

Hi Kate. Kate really liked this piece.

TRACEY EMIN – ‘IS THIS A JOKE’
a lot of people can relate to that – though they might not admit it . . .

detail, TRACEY EMIN, ‘IS THIS a JOKE.’
or what ?!!? right on.

hand stitched detail. drips, of pain. upside down drips ? well, maybe more – spikes than drips ?
TAYLOR McKIMENS, look out !!

detail. the hand stitched calligraphy – was super fine.
hands down. in all aspects of the word.

yes, the ABSOLUTELY !! EXQUISITE !! catalog – TRACEY EMIN – ‘ONE THOUSAND DRAWINGS BY TRACEY EMIN’.
small in size, how did they do it – with glasscine-like thin-as-air pages !! stunning – fragile & weighty – all at the same time.
just like Ms. Emin, herself.

“SET OUT FROM LIVING INSIDE OF ME”.
talk about attention to detail.
the hard cover book front – had a different image than the book cover ‘wrapper’.
both were done in the manner of her monoprints.

a random page – ‘ONE THOUSAND DRAWINGS BY TRACEY EMIN’.

TRACEY EMIN – “JOURNEY ACROSS AMERICA U.S.A 1994”.

another great hard cover book on display at the front desk.

TRACEY EMIN, ‘WORKS 1963 – 2006’. RIZZOLI.

from the book: a young TRACEY . . striking even back then.

TRACEY EMIN, ’20 YEARS’ – NATIONAL GALLERIES of SCOTLAND, 2008.

RONALD SOSINSKI, just back from the FRIEZE ART FAIR, in London, told us he read Tracey’s autobiography,
‘STRANGELAND’ on the plane back home and said it was “really something.” and a page turner. no doubt.
too bad they didn’t have any copies available at the opening. but apparently it is available online through the TATE MUSEUM in London, and even on AMAZON !!
p.s. talking about strangelands, intensity, outrageous – and even, notorious behavior, and ships coming in – if the new PARIS NYC FRONT – i.e. VLADIMIR RESTOIN ROITFELD and ANDY VALMORBIDA !! can get that scumbag RICHARD HAMBELTON’s works to fly – can our beloved BASQUIAT FORGER – ALFREDO MARTINEZ – and his working guns, fake guns, and PRISON DRAWINGS on HAND-MADE PAPER – be far behind !!
trouble is – you can’t bring Alfredo anywhere. he is the world’s biggest liar, con, and thief !! kleptomanic is not the correct word – but it applies. plus, unlike Hambleton who has been hobbled by his rampant decades worth of crack use – Alfredo is drug free, and BIG !! and his pockets are overfilling with weapons, homemade knives, box cutters, the whole deal.
not to mention the seriously bad friends he picked up in prison. yes. he came out, worse then when he went in.
so, we figure – as long as we can keep him in CHINA – where he is an artist-in-residence !! (well at least they got the real thing & plus he likes Asian girls and Chinese food !!) we might have a chance.
so the word is: if Alfredo asks you if he can come back – the answer is: no.
bad time, recession. no food. there is no food in NYC. esp no food for street artists !!
but watch out, world. looks like the underdogs – will always – prevail, no doubt about it.

ok. so on that hopeful note !! we’ll close with a few of Tracey’s monoprints !!
TRACEY EMIN – “EVERY FUCKING TIME” !!

TRACEY EMIN – “DON’T KID YOURSELF TRACEY – YOUR SCARED SHITLESS”.

in production
before I even get into this – I have to say, I’m a big big fan of URS FISCHER, but not so, of the new New Museum.
why ? cause they value ‘socialite’ pix over ‘art’ pix, among other reasons. they are cold-hearted to the bone. calculating and boring. their take on the art scene, esp ‘new’ art – is as narrow as their bullying, I mean building. mental and metal on the Bowery – the best way to sum the place up in 2 words. unless you also want to add, warning: not terribly bright ‘socials’ at work. and you thought America was all about a classless society, or esp its new museums. right.
if you didn’t know art was about the money – this place makes sure you get the picture.
and, there it is, right in the heart of the (formerly low down & dirty) Lower East Side. ouch.
I mean I guess the whole point is to get the the big collectors to hook up with the new art. is it working.
you tell me. I don’t see anywhere near the kind of exciting big party spilling out onto the street – it would need to be – to do that. to light fires. but, what do I know – maybe all that stuff goes on behind closed doors. it ain’t no street scene, it sure ain’t no rave – that’s for sure. its pretty much empty most of the time.
so I’m hoping this tongue-in-a-hole, by Urs, that apparently pops up at ya from a small hole in the wall – as reported on by Roberta Smith – is metaphor, for what I want to do – every time that New Museum name comes up – which is – to stick a tongue out at them. of course, there are no photos of that pop-out tongue – in the Times essay. well there ya go. the Times pix were pretty lame, the review was kind, but no rave. but can’t wait to see the ‘enlightening’ socialite pix from the super elitist members-only opening. Read somewhere, was it the New York Times ARTS & LEISURE last summer, that MARCIA TUCKER, the New Museum’s radical founding Director, thought that everyone on the museum’s staff, from the guards to the curators to the head administrators – should earn exactly the same salary. of course, and probably rightfully so, the current Director, LISA PHILLIPS pooh-poohed that notion as unrealistic. but it seems a colorful way to capture the kind of forward-looking, brilliantly bold, and all-encompassing energy that let Ms. Tucker build a museum from the ground up. as opposed to the kind of narrow castle of default it has become. URS: tongues and tanking – they both start with the letter T.
T for thanks. you always get it right.

URS FISCHER – MARQUERITE de PONTY – NEW MUSEUM – 10/21/09 – 2/7/10.
the pix on the museum website – are actually pretty good. way better than the Times photos, which were awful.
the museum pix – actually make you wanna go see the show.
take the time – to scroll down that web page – they even have a pretty snappy video of the tongue in motion !!

the image is: ‘CORRIDA IN RONDA #6″ (DETAIL), 84 x 108 in, OIL/LINEN, 2008.
. . . guess this could be worth $1.2 million to somebody. if I had a choice, and esp since I missed the party – !! – which was open to all, bye the way, no lists – I’d stick to anything by either one of the ATM – SUTHERLAND BROS. . . . but who am I ? not to mention KELIE BOWMAN, ALLYSON MELLBERG, MIN KIM, PATRICK GRIFFFIN, CONRAD CARLSON, BRIAN CHIPPENDALE, KENNY KOMER, BORIS RASIN. JERRY BLACKMAN. even GEORGIA GRAY & JORY RABINOWITZ. well, and many others, yes. too numerous to pin down. contrary to what you may think – it’s rainin’ artists in this town. bigger dollars ?? well. ok. URS FISCHER. TAYLOR McKIMENS. for starters. don’t get me started. I’d rather plunk my money down and see it double in the very same instant, than sit around in a big bucks ‘holding & hoping’ position. where’s the fun in that ? anyways, I heard tell – recently, that the “big businessmen collectors” don’t get excited unless the price tags – are well over $1 mill !! so, hey – here’s your price tag – enjoy. am I serious, that’s for me to know, and you to squirm by. the art world – ain’t it a bitch ?
see: MARY BOONE, wow – she’s really up-dated her website – since last I looked.
see: ERIC FISCHL/MARY BOONE OCT 31-DEC 19, 2009 !!
. . . p.s. anybody else out there think – ERIC FISCHL looks just like – ART WORLD – BALLOON BOY – ‘WE LIVE IN PUBLIC’ INTERNET GURU – JOSH HARRIS – WITH THAT BIG CIGAR stuck in his mouth . . . ?!!

NICK & GOTTLUND VERLAG recently published a beautifully crafted, letterpress printed, limited edition book, (500 copies), for PETER SUTHERLAND, titled: ‘Even in the End’ – a very creative editing of Peter’s photos, and a very creative production in total. in all ways !!

OCT 24: ok.
the SUTHERLAND BROS – POP-UP – SHOW: ‘AMATEUR HOUR’ – at ATM – was a huge party. a big dynamic gathering of NYC’s latest wave of young professionals – and a most diverse & cutting edge – meet of the – creative tribes, it was !! the new kids bounced off the walls with the joyful energy of the work – and, then spilled out onto the street. high spirits abounded. pix to post shortly. but I’ll say this: PETER SUTHERLAND’S new assortment of photos – were the best. documentary cutting edge. and his bro, ANDREW SUTHERLAND, makes the most amazing pictorial sculptures – you will ever see. my fav: the sleeping bag, duh !!
. . . so make sure to make it – over there, and you will also be able to congratulate BILL BRADY – on his forward-looking & creative move – to ‘get-over’ – and make the best of these hard pressed times !! in a brilliant stroke of strategic play – Bill is taking ATM up & over to 24th St – where, unlike 27th St – the street crowds are still aplenty and include more mainstream denizens, lots of big galleries on that street, unlike 27th. BILL has set up a storefront gallery partnership – with FREIGHT & VOLUME. they will be rotating the space at 542 W24th ST !! good move – and prob the worst kept secret in town – but we promised we wouldn’t spill the beans – till we got the official go-ahead. so, good luck in your location – BILL BRADY.
our prediction: watch out 24th ST – !! Bill is gonna rule. his opening shot ? the formidable MIN KIM – opening THURS NOV 12/6-8PM. and, yeah I got a sneak preview of her new work – its gonna blow everybody away – very new fresh stuff. some pieces have already been snapped up !! and you know, there’s no b.s. on artlovers !! esp no has-been cliche, all-black clad, ‘women’ artists, looking all alike – with, watch-out for this over-used & stale phrase – “gender-bending” – haircuts ? they sure don’t mean the work – NEW YORK MAG – com’on – you can do better than that, can’t cha, focus on the work – and, not the hair cut ?

here’s a few pieces from my own, mostly thrift shop find – needlecraft collection !!

hand blown glass pin cushion. ca. 1960 ? maybe earlier. don’t know.
paid $4.

early Victorian pin cushion – late 1800s ?
paid $12.

pumpkin pin cushion, early 1900s ? not sure.

top: hand-carved DIY bone crochet hook. the manufactured hand-made ones, had fancy work at the handle’s other edge.
early 1880s ? it has a really nice ‘used’ feel to it. I like to think a sailor made it from whalebone – but I’m not sure.
some were actually made from cow bone.
bottom: 2 porcupine quills. from a nature store that was in SOHO, back in the day, the 1990’s – selling (illegal) black market animal skeletons, alligator heads, and shells, etc. now closed.
Native American Indians used these to decorate their clothes made from animal, mostly deer deer hides, before they were able to trade for European beads. they would dye the quills with (permanent) natural vegetable dyes, colors like red or black. then put the quills between their teeth and flatten them, making sure to retain the sharp points. and then ‘thread’ them through the softened animal hides.
1900’s.

sharp points – man-made and found in nature.

felt embroidery ‘farm’ scene. ca. Woodstock days – late 1960s.
child’s sleeve cuff.

mother of pearl buttons. yep back in the day – way back – buttons were made from shells.
back in the day of the Lower East Side, pre 2000 – you could find all these old creaky old sewing goods emporiums all along lower Broadway south of Houston. usually run by ancient old Jewish men in yarmulkas, they were fantastic treasure troves of vintage needle goods. esp buttons and ribbons. the stock had not been updated for at least 100 years, even 200.
not joking.
when the buildings became more valuable – than the goods – (for a long time they were worth zip), they were sold, and now you can find OLD NAVY and STARBUCKS instead.

the old yiddisha men used to pull the mother of pearl buttons out in small sacks – like they were gold.
some were very raw.

some were very finished.
. . . all could take you back – to – HOME ON THE PRAIRIE – days. at the very least. some of the stuff even went back to Colonial times.
