‘Neointegrity’, curated by KEITH MAYERSON.
A dynamite show, of over 180 artists – what makes this group show so unusual, is the top-notch quality of all the works, the diversity, and the way they were all positioned so beautifully. The effect is an unusually inviting and clearly thought out, well spaced survey, which carves out a huge space in what usually comes across as a small gallery space. Though it includes one piece from so many different artists, it comes across as a classical exhibit, rather than a huge free-for-all – and belies the incredible range of work to be found on the walls. This calmly presented, but inspiring and energetic curatorial vision encompasses the psychedelic to the pornographic, the expressionistic to the literal to the surreal, and goes from ‘green’ to ‘glitz’ and back again many times, reflecting a far flung and generous focus on art itself – with the inclusion of the whole gamut of art scene strivers, from the newly established, to the just-about-to-break-apart-from-the-pack to the total unknowns. The show had the effect of being really well thought out, and then really well composed once assembled in the space, losing no steam from the thought process – and one could move from piece to piece marveling at the individual visions and uniqueness of creativity.
The street outside the gallery was packed and excited, as to be expected from such a big group show of young (and younger) artists, but what made it so exceptional, was that everyone seemed to have (already) the excited sense that they had participated in a show that was a knock-out, and could bring the kind of attention that could move a young artist’s standing, a couple of notches higher on the art scene radar.

Last Tuesday, July 10, 2007, MACY’s held a small reception for its ‘ART UNDER GLASS’ SUMMER 2007 exhibit – in which artwork is featured in the display windows of the MACY’S flagship store in NYC.
DESIGNER ANNA SUI was the special guest, and AMY LAROCCA of New York Magazine hosted the evening, which included a brief Q & A between Amy and Anna. Apparently ANNA SUI includes “several art-inspired looks” in her line, and they chatted mostly about how Anna is interested in and finds inspiration in contemporary art.
ANNA SUI was not an easy speaker, and Amy had trouble drawing her out. But after posting the recent JACK HANLEY item (a few posts below) – we thought back with greater interest to the most telling moment of their brief public interview. Amy Larocca, asked ANNA SUI at one point, something to the effect that, since you like art so much – what do you collect ? with the implication being that Anna has a big or at least diverse or maybe informed or even impulsive contemporary art collection, or would maybe drop the names of a few surprising and/or new cutting – edge artists. but no, Amy was very surprised, even a little bit taken aback by Anna’s response – Anna Sui said she only collects ONE thing – 60’s psychedelic band posters !!!!!

SIMON CERIGO reports – JACK HANLEY has signed the lease for a New York City location, down in TRIBECA.
Legendary West Coast dealer, JACK HANLEY, with galleries in SAN FRANCISCO and LA, has just signed a lease for a ground floor, downtown location, on WATTS STREET between GREENWICH and WASHINGTON STREETS, right across from CAPSUTO FRERES, the famous Tribeca restaurant.
The renovations start next week and the gallery is scheduled to open in time for the upcoming FALL 2007 season.
Simon also says that JACK HANLEY has a close relationship with GAVIN BROWN, as evidenced by that great Gavin Brown enterprise show, last summer (2006) – of Jack’s personal collection of psychedelic posters from the 60’s, which received widespread popular and critical acclaim.
And, one of the reasons factoring into the new gallery location, might be Hanley’s desire to be in the GBE neighboorhood.

Simon chose to post a photo of this particular poster, (from the GBE show), for it’s skull imagery, made so prominent this season by DAMIEN HIRST. This early Grateful Dead poster, according to the exhibit’s original press release, was the “first” SF poster/card that young musician Hanley encounters, and which presumably set him on his future visual, as opposed to musical, journeys. ..

“He may not be “The Splasher”, but cops say he’s a stinker.
James Cooper, a 24-year-old Bushwick (Brooklyn) resident, was hit with a charge of attempted arson yesterday after polic say he tried to ignite a stink bomb at a crowded gallery opening in Brooklyn.

“The local art community was immediately abuzz with speculation that cooper was the infamous Splasher – who has (recently) defaced dozens of street-art creations throughout the city with splotches of (white) house paint.
….
“Witnesses say that at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Cooper and an unidentified man attempted to ignite an incendiary device in a coffee can durung the crowded open-bar reception. A partygoer noticed the smoke and alerted security.
“Cooper was quickly caught, but his accomplice got away.
“Fairey, who gained notice in the early 1990’s by putting up stencils of wrestler Andre the Giant and “OBEY GIANT” stickers around cities throughout the east Coast, said Cooper shouldn’t get off easy.
“This is serious. I’ve been arrested for doing street art. I knew I would be held accountable for my actions, and he should have considered that jail may be a possibility.”, said fairey, who confronted Cooper after security nabbed him.

“the criminal complaint against Cooper notes, “If the device had stayed lit, it cold have ignited and caused a fire.”
“The Splasher has struck 20 out of 22 murals Fairey created in New York City.
“Fairey has his own theory on why his work is targeted.
‘Because I’ve moved beyond just doing street art, some have the idea that I’ve been corrupted. I’ve been able to have an art career and a design career, yet I continue to do street art and therefore I should be punished’, he said.”

what’s really amazing, is, if you are, also a “LAW AND ORDER” TV junkie, like artlovers, this kid looks just like all the brainwashed ultra right wing hate spawn that turn up on the show in regular rotation!
