~NY ART BOOK FAIR/PRINTED MATTER

more on: THE NY ART BOOK FAIR / 24 -26 OCTOBER 2008 !!

. . . just like THRIFT SHOP is the new black !! – just joking !! (maybe not . . . !!)

GRAPHIC ARTS & in particular GRAPHIC DESIGN are the new career choices and consuming interest – of the art world’s youngest wave of creative citizens. (its either that, …. or street art !!)
And animated happy chattering hordes of these bright young professionals turned up – en masse, for the 2008 NY ART BOOK FAIR. and why not. it was chockful of brilliant design, cutting edge content, a multitude of formats – and multiples – that were easily acquired – on an entry level NYC salary – or often, even, just given away !!

case in point the: THE NY ART BOOK FAIR – EXHIBITOR’S CATALOG – designed by GARRICK GOTT, published by PRINTED MATTER, and free for the taking !!
A beautiful little book, the size of a postcard and the heft of a small, well, book !! – it was delightful in many ways, from its tactile quality, the weight & feel of the pages, the way it was bound, the HELVETICA font, and the very restricted – yet striking color hues of a contrasting sharp pink outside, and a deep blue on the inside. (I’m feeling like a restaurant critic.) It was extremely functional, durable – and completely useful; a nice resource to look back on, once you got home. The sharp luminous saturated matte pink red color, of the cover – lit up the fair – like tiny twinkling Christmas lites – as they lay freely scattered about – on tables, and carried about – in everyone’s hands !!
adding to the considerable merriment – as this new wave of young artworld afficionados – dug in and stirred up – the fair’s very considerable & totally enjoyable offerings. Their enthusiasm for what they saw – was reflected on the
exhibitors’ friendly, and almost overwhelmed by the crowds – countenances. Everybody must have got on their cell phones and told their friends to get up off their butts, and come on over !!

(a small aside: a lot of people said one of the reasons the fair was so hugely successful this year, was the new venue: the PHILLIPS de PURY auction house’s – huge 3rd floor !! with its broken up, yet large and well-lit, interior space – so it’s interesting to entertain for a moment, the great contrast between the new wave – so upbeat and full of content, with everybody happily swinging shopping bags !! full of treasured goodies for the eye, mind & soul – and the bloodbath that took place there, one week later as the old guard’s so-called ‘CONTEMPORARY’ blue chip auctions !! absolutely failed – with over 40% of the first evening’s offerings unsold, and people walking around stunned, and disturbed – like zombies – clueless. The high end production catalogs – weren’t even worth the paper they were printed on. (usually they are sought-out collector’s items !!) and, it wasn’t just PHILLIPS, it was the blue chip secondary market in general. SOTHEBY’S & CHRISTE’S too. and, yo !! give credit where credit is due – PHILLIPS is the most forward-looking, and artist-friendly of the auction houses – I mean, come on – they were huge sponsors of this, the 3rd ANNUAL NY ART BOOK FAIR, and they provided the great venue !! right smack in the heart of Chelsea. TEKSERVE was also a proud sponsor of the fair. . . . It’s the just the contrast between the old guard of so-called art patrons – vs. the bright new wave – that’s so painful to watch. pull that old crusty scab off – and let the new DNA – see the sun’s daylight !!

book # 4

we got to peek into the shopping bag of a young fair goer. a recent GRAPHIC DESIGN major from SVA !!
THE NY ART BOOK FAIR catalog – was at the top of the pile & she had five of them !! cost: FREE !!
they were actually tons of them spilling out everywhere – you could have grabbed 10,
and it would have been – ok.

book # 6

the catalog, designed by GARRICK GOTT – was way more than meets the eye – it was kind of the visual
equivalent of a HAIKU and an amuse buche all – rolled into one – in fact, it was kind of a toy.
it went from pink to blue & back again – in the blink of an eye.

book # 7

and it had that great HELVETICA font – that the SAGMEISTER / DEITCH SHOW, obliquely brought to our attention
because of his participation in the short brilliant film of the same name – ‘HELVETICA’ – hero font of the truly modern, or is that – contemporary – urban city.

ok. they have their website – up and running !! – for now it only has poster/invites for the shows – but, if you ask me – that is plenty good enough to check it out !! totally entertaining – as is. and good art, too.
the site will eventually have photos from the openings and a presentation of the works.

see: Nationalmuseum !!

JOHN HODANY – ALSO WROTE TO TELL US:
. . he is in Berlin and has a big solo show coming up in Berlin in MARCH 2009.
& he will be sending in some pix of the PRECURSE opening & installation, as well as – an explanation !!
of what ‘Nationalmuseum ‘ is all about !!

when we asked for more info – this is what he wrote:

1. JOHN HODANY will be doing a solo show with LENA BRUENING GALERIE in BERLIN – in MARCH 2009.

2. JOHN HODANY . . . “as you may know, has been living and working in NYC and Berlin over the last few years.
A group of friends of mine in Berlin including me, MICHAEL KIRKHAM, LARS MONRAD VAAGE, and RAAF VAN DER SMAN – have opened a ‘moving’ artist-run gallerie space called – ‘Nationalmuseum’. WE are now running 6 consecutive shows opening every Friday / Nov 7 – Dec 12, 2008.
THIS is th first group of shows – of more to come. We are currently looking for a ground street level floor space. So for the time being – we will probably be a ‘moving’ gallerie dong a series of shows at different locations always under our name. The current shows are being presented in a space we found still under construction – we fixed it and are using it for the weekend shows.. That space will become a bar, music venue, project – it is called ‘Lavafeld’.

“The first show was a major success. ‘Nationalmuseum’ NOV 7th. We had great work from 40 international artists. We must have had over 300 people running into the morning.

“The second show was ‘Precurse’ – Nov 15th. Curated by me with work from 18 artists – mainly from NY and intrnational artists living in Berlin. It was also a success with again hundreds of people running into the morning.
I am very proud of this show as I feel I put together a strange mix of owrk.
I was visiting NY for 2 weeks in Oct. and met with some artist/friends including: BRIAN BELOTT, BRENDAN CASS, JEFF CARAMAGNA, ZOE PETTIJOHN, and CHRIS SCHADE.
The premise for this show was to get ‘precursor’ work which often led to larger works, sculpture, other projects – often that gem work that meant a lot to the artist. I dug through a lot of drawings. paintings. collages and was pleased to show work made – sometimes 8 years back to the present. I got some amazing and dear Belott collages and some wicked marker drawings from Brendan Cass – which led to some of his huge canvases.”

JOHN sent in these photos from the ‘Nationalmuseum’ / ‘PRECURSE’ opening – all photos by JOHN HODANY.

THIS IS THE SHOW’S CARD – A ‘GIVE-AWAY’ PHOTOGRAPH/PRINTED ON 1/4 in. solid artboard.
8-1/2 x 11-1/2 x 1/4 in. in other words – it is a limited, albeit large run – 3-D OBJECT !!
It sure ain’t no slim paper poster !! It’s almost a mounted photograph. It’s a contemporary multiple, low cost. i.e. free – a ‘give-away’ – high end production – ‘fan’ base collectible.
It’s also got a – raised typeface – on the reverse – the side with the show’s info.

The type looks exactly like LETTRASET. almost as thick.
He only signed 2 at the opening – just as he left.

from the home page: SUNDAY NOV 9 2008

NATE LOWMAN brought MARY-KATE OLSEN to the RICHARD PRINCE opening at GOGO !! which was fun – & – where the new PRINCE paintings left the NURSES behind, and kinda spit out a hot mix of rastafarian washboard abs meets buttnaked hot chicks – each painting priced to go: in the 1 to 3 million bucks range, depending on size !!
& yes, I bet they all sell, no matter who’s dying & crying – if you KNOW your art – it’s still the only real savvy place to park your bucks – mega or otherwise – witness: BILL BRADY of ATM – who just sold out ALL the TOMOO GOKITAS in his current show !! *
and so, cause we’re still in such a good mood from the ALPHA BETA music show – FATIMA SANTOS & CLAY ROSS – MATUTO !!

LISTEN UP !! – everybody is calling the new JOE BRADLEY show up at CANADA, the “genius” – show !! – so if YOU can’t follow the art world money trail – don’t blame me – all you dumbass wannabes !! *

UP-DATE: THURS NOV 20 2008 – THE STATION – MIAMI 2008 !!

NATE LOWMAN will play a starring role in the upcoming ART BASEL MIAMI BEACH WEEKEND !!

NATE and SHAMIM MOMIN, a WHITNEY curator – are co-curating a ‘pop-up’ exhibition, called ‘THE STATION’.

from advance P.R. – “The exhibition brings both emerging and established artists into a dialog in the unique
environment of a recently constructed building in Midtown Miami. The 12,000 sq. ft. interior is still completely raw and unbuilt, with the vestiges of construction lending the event a sense of flux.” !!

and, looky !! here – JOE BRADLEY, will be playing (no doubt) – a starring role in that exhibit !!

some of the other artists include: RITA ACKERMANN, DIANA Al-HADID, LISA ANNE AUERBACH, DIKE BLAIR, LIZZI BOUGATSOS, OLAF BREUNING, PETER COFFIN, DEVON COSTELLO, GARDAR EIDE EINARSSON, JONAH FREEMAN,

~OLAF BREUNING/METRO PICTURES

OLAF BREUNING
OCT 11 – NOV 8, 2008
METRO PICTURES – 519 WEST 24th ST – CHELSEA – NYC

. . . the show is already down, but strolling by the exhibit, while waiting for RICHARD PRINCE to arrive at his opening, a few doors down – this show of new work by OLAF BREUNING – became more and more intriguing – and since, it is down – maybe it is timely to post some shots, for everyone else who missed it !!
OLAF BREUNING acquired some real legs for his work, and most likely was the only one to have done so – at this year’s WHITNEY BIENNALE 2008. A lot of young artists and young art world professionals spoke very well of his showing there, but not a glimpse of his work is shown on the WHITNEY survey video of the event !! what losers they are over there, sorry – but its true.

on a up note – as part of ART PROJECTS at MIAMI BASEL 2008, the SAGAMORE HOTEL has commissioned a site specific work from Mr. BREUNING – a 150 ton sand sculpture !! that will be located directly behind the hotel, DEC 4 – 7, 2008 !!
so if you are going to MIAMI -don’t miss it.

Mr. BREUNING, is 38 years old, young ? being born in 1970 in Schaffhausen, SWITZERLAND.
he currently lives and works in both New York and Zurich.

Breuning # 6
detail, OLAF BREUNING, ‘The Big Challenge’
it was the New York Times casually joking sound bite reference to this piece – that initially turned me off from the show. mistake – its not really indicative of the show’s sharper dry wit & originality of expression. the show actually reminded me of the young art collective, outta PHILLY – BOBO – shows – but whereas the BOBO shows escalate into complete and wild wonder and mess – BREUNING stays very composed, but just as wild & globally visionary – in his own weird way.

. . . here’s another piece that brings BOBO to mind. (as opposed to let’s say DAMIEN HIRST). the ‘gynecological’ lamps !!, the red lights !! the white ceramic organically shaped pedestal bases – the anthropomorphic aspects. the human dimensions. the future . . . implications. like ? like when . . . . ROBOTS WILL RULE THE WORLD !!
. . . it also brings to mind – all the light (and light to handle !!) ‘fixtures’ – we’ve been seeing lately. and they’re ALL great. sculptures that double as functioning electrical light design elements for your home !! as opposed to all those awful heavy 70’s stuff that really belonged on a junk yard, not your 100 acre industrial garden, and need a heavy duty crane to move around. ala TONY SMITH & FRANK STELLA – and, all those other ol’ school guys, too numerous to name & blame.
. . . a little more on the anthropomorphic implications !! not all sculpture & free standing work does this – witness STERLING RUBY – one artist whose work, no matter the format – definitely does NOT do this. and not all anthropomorphic work calls to mind futuristic robots – witness JOE BRADLEY – whose abstract gestures always call to mind -just us, . . . us silly human beings.

some more drawing on the wall – in a kind of fluid, no drip – comic book calligraphy. and to the right: another white ceramic pedestal bodied, techno bearing head – OLAF BREUNING, ‘What you Hear, You Speak’, 2008.

breuning # 11
a change in pace – a white ceramic bearing a non-techno group of heads, ceramic face headed pitchers !!
but why do I feel I’ve seen this before ? these pitchers must be a mass produced souvenir item or something. I’ve seen them on artist ‘display’ wall shelves before. somehow I also recall another water fountain like this ? whatever.

breuning # 12
detail, OLAF BREUNING, ‘Water Head’, 2008
it’s a working water fountain. really a working ‘spit’ from a guy with a big grin. the jokes on you !!
so there is tech in the head – after all – the waterworks.

Breuning # 13
OLAF BREUNING. ‘Fire’ , 2008. Mounted C-print. 60 x 75 in. Edition of 6.

breuning # 14

this is an amazing piece, no doubt about it. it looks and feels like a painting.
it feels like it speaks to post 9-ll NYC and the global world. a whole subtext of art history master thesis projects – could be built around this single image.
this is one image that could be put in front of any student – from KINDERGARTEN on up – to ask them: if art – has any real meaning to life !!

changing gears – more line drawing on the walls. OLAF BREUNING. METRO PICTURES.

OLAF BREUNING # 20
Mr BREUNING is definitely out to send a signal. just as much as SCOTT HUG !!
OLAF BREUNING, ‘Why Can You Not Be Nice With Nature?’, 2008
Mounted C-print, 60 x 75 in.

breuning # 21
not just a high end production big budget show, it also included some small framed black line drawing . . . cartoons, also out to say something, on a wide range of human issues. !!

Breuning # 22
one of our favs !! light bulb head man !!
OLAF BREUNING, line drawing.

there was this one grainy low resolution photo of OLAF BREUNING in one of the catalogs on the reception desk.
