BOBO

… BOBO !!!!!
… when you hear that name: BOBO .. you go go & get yourself there !! wherever it is – it’ll be worth it.
This band gets it huge driving force from guitar player PHIL COTE, but they all rock. The band played recently at the JULEP BAR, a small crowded bar on AVE A in the East Village, for the opening party of the 14th ANNUAL NEW YORK UNDERGROUND FILM FESTIVAL.

They came with a small devoted fan entourage, numbering not more than 12, maybe 24 at most, (….”our biggest audience, ever..”), but soon had the whole place jumping up and down so hard – the ancient wooden floor started to shake so seriously – the place seemed in imminent danger of caving in – right then and there..

they were followed by the MIAMI ICE MACHINE, whose driving force seems to be derived from their lead singer and frontman, GRAHAM WATLING..

… FRANKIE MARTIN gave 3 more performances at CANADA
during the run of her show ….
“FRANKIE” – SAT MARCH 17, 3-6PM
“FREAKOUT” – SAT MARCH 17, 8PM -&-
a “CLOSING DANCE PARTY” – FRI MARCH 23, 5-9PM

‘Frankie Martin – in your dreamz’ – included a performance by Frankie’s “comedic dance troupe” – “FREAKOUT” at the opening, as well, and at which NYC artist ERIKA SOMOYGI was one of the dancers. The most interesting thing, in the show was a riveting loop projection of the 3 girl dance troupe, lead by Frankie, photographed against a water fountain in an urban setting. It also had a “techno” beat soundtrack, that stayed with you, and visual collaged elements swirling in the backgrounds.

… bye the way, were SIENNA MILLER’s handlers channeling EDIE SEDGWICK or FRANKIE MARTIN, ( albeit turned to all-black) when they
dressed her up in this notorious costume for the “FACTORY GIRL” premiere after-party ?

an item on AYA TAKANO first posted on THE BOMB – MARCH 20, 2006.

we can’t get out of our head the buzz that recently surfaced about Ms. Takano from the recent ARMORY ART FAIR 2007, in a NEW YORK TIMES article (published March 3, 2007) – that chronicled the art buying adventures of “new” collector SUSAN HANCOCK.

Her first stop at the fair: ” . . . Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, which is based in
Paris and represents the Japanese artist Aya Takano. Ms. Hancock has been collecting Ms. Takano’s paintings, cartoonish and colorful, for two years.
” … she had already committed to purchasing one large painting.
” … The piece, ‘Stuffed Animal Room’, cost $70,000.
” … “I’m in love with all her paintings, but there were alot … that were very sexually explicit, and I have a bunch of neices who come to visit,” Ms. Hancock said. “The stuffed animals are a lot safer.”

Neutral Milk Hotel #4

Neutral Milk Hotel #5

I just bought my 4th copy (in ten years) of Neutral Milk Hotel’s 2nd CD
In The Aeroplane Over The Sea and it sounds as fresh and new as when
I first bought it ten years ago.

In my history of Indie music it ranks as one of the top 10 CDs of the last 15 years,
up there with Cat Power’s and the Palace Brother’s first CDs.

Since Jeremy Barnes, who plays drums and organ on this compelling CD,
resurfaced on that great Beirut debut CD last year, and Kevin Barnes, aka
Of Montreal, has just released his 7th CD (a review on that CD will be coming soon),
and Apples in Stereo, (Elephant 6 founder and Apples in Stereo guitarist Robert Schneider plays several instruments, and produced this 2nd Neutral Milk Hotel CD), released their first CD in five years, I felt I should express my thanks to the whole Elephant 6 community for (as a friend of mine
named Cricket said a few years ago) …”saving the music”.

The sound and lyrics on In The Aeroplane Over the Sea at first sound strange and familiar
at the same time, it takes a few listens to get the awesome poetics and place the musicial references.
The whole CD is great and should be listened to, all the way through.

Lead singer Jeff Mangum’s lyrics revolve around Anne Frank’s diaries,
while the music can be described as American hillbilly folk punk. The spirit
that dominated Neutral Milk Hotel and other Elephant 6 groups, was one
of exuberant co-operation, musicians would play in each other’s bands,
and live shows like Olivia Tremor Control’s were famous for their joyous
jam sessions.

PRODUCED BY ROBERT SCHNEIDER

Recorded in the Elephant 6 Recording Company July – Sept 1997

Art Direction: Chris Bilheimer & Jeff Mangum – “Flying Victoria” by Brian Dewan

according to DANIEL REICH, Birgit Megerle was influenced in part, by German painting of the 1920s, & in particular by CHRISTIAN SCHAD.
By coincidence, one could have seen some examples of this early 20th century
German painting at the MET, at about the same time, in a small but brilliant exhibit:
‘GLITTER AND DOOM’ – German Portraits from the 1920s.
(Nov 14 – Feb 19, 2007)
