ORIGINAL ARTLOVERS HOME PAGE/POSTED/APRIL 24, 2008:

** YO!! listen up !! **
there’s a great little art world film – premiering in the TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL THIS WEEK !!!

FUNNY, SWIFT, COMPELLING, WITH SWEET HIGHS & LOWS
this is a REAL insider’s look behind the photos !!
and the art world careers.
PAUL H-O who churned out GalleryBeat on Public Access TV – in the early 90s – with WALTER ROBINSON !! – (that’s what you did when you wanted to rock the artworld before there was the web) – & – TOM DONAHUE of ‘WASHINGTON HEIGHTS’ acclaim – have put together a really intimate & witty reflective documentary – that you don’t often get to see – I wonder, why! …. that it includes footage of some of our favorite people in the art world, and what a diff 5 years can make – is the icing on the cake. this IS the one to go see….
just saw it, last nite .. and I’m still fascinated by it . .
* it’s got black & white surfer titles just like that only other really great art movie – ‘BASQIUAT’ – in fact, it even has vintage Julian Schnabel footage – (classic Julian throwing a fit) – and, even, CHARLIE FINCH gets a star turn – with a cameo appearance !! *
* but unlike ‘BASQUIAT’ – it’s got the REAL characters – playing themselves – what could be better !! !! *
* ‘GUEST OF CINDY SHERMAN’ – a FILMLIKE PRODUCTION – !! – has its premiere this SUNDAY, APRIL 27th at 9PM !! *

The second CDs of both Beirut (The Flying Club Cup) and Band of Horses (Cease To Begin) expand on the musical pleasures enjoyed in their debuts – see reviews below.

Since I am always on a quest for that thrill that comes with discovering a “New” great sound, I sometimes miss the follow-up CDs of a great band.

On Beirut’s new CD, Zach Condon’s melodic voice is t stretched to great effect, while the music gets a little tighter in all the right places. On the Band of Horses’ new CD – the sound is more relaxed and not as etched as on their debut. Both groups’ second CD releases flesh out the promise of authenticity that was clearly declared in their first “gems”. It is so refreshing to hear music made by musicians who are enjoying themselves so much. VIVA LA INDEPENDENCE !!
