~CASUAL ART FAIR: MORE GOTH . . than hippie

in fact . . quite ELIZABETHAN !!
as in . . SHAKESPEAREAN.

casual-art-fair-2016
the tents were very . . Elizabethan, open & airy. like a town square in a park, on the Lower East Side on a sunny day.
the pitch was very low key. I liked that.
I also liked that there was some hard edges – to the lightly fluttering tents.
and I definitely likes this . . red.

jay-riggio-barry-lohan
JAY RIGGIO and BARRY LOHAN.

JAY RIGGIO was exhibiting his collages – they looked like vinyl album covers, ‘poetic’ ones.

yep.

JAY RIGGIO.
my sentiments – exactly.

barry-lohan-artwork
BARRY LOHAN: now, his work was almost the exact opposite, a man of few words !!
but pretty much the same message: beware. be strong. stay focused, and make a line in the sand.

barry-lohan-samurai
BARRY LOHAN, great signage, dude.
my much under-rated, friend Simon always used to say, being an artist . . esp an ‘unrecognized’ aka ‘outsider’ one – is like being a Samurai warrior.
many Samurai warriors were walking among these tents.

~CASUAL ART FAIR: CYRIL MAZARD & MARK ENGER, GHOST

CYRIL MAZARD . . . brings on the GHOST ARMY !!
what is the LOWER EAST SIDE – without the ghost of MARK ENGER, RIP ?!!!

cyril-mazard-mark-enger-painting
one of my first encounters . . upon arriving was CYRIL MAZARD.
we both have a dear, dear departed friend in common – the late, great artist & screen print maestro / redneck genius . . MARK ENGER.

cyril-mazard-his-book
CYRIL was exhibiting & selling some indie zine / books of his own making – including this soft cover, full color catalog, titled: ‘Cyril Mazard – 50 Paintings 1996-2012’, which featured this quite good portrait of . . MARK ENGER – towards the back.
titled: ‘MARK BY CYRIL’, 2011 . . I guess it was painted after Mark’s untimely death, Jan 7, 2011.
this sweet & so so talented authentic civil war / cowboy . . lost the battle with throat cancer. yeah, he smoked, he drank coca-cola like it was water, actually . . instead of water, and he lived and worked in his silkscreen studio amidst all the fumes . . so there ya go, another lonely cowboy rides off into the sunset.

I’m only cracking jokes, because otherwise I’d be crying, and that’s why it took me so long to start – these Casual Art Fair posts.
talk about . . ‘outsiders’ !!

I mean, if you can call WALTER ROBINSON, an ‘outsider’ with decades, decades !! of writing about the art world – under his belt, a recent & very successful, traveling museum retrospective, & . . a big big show – now up at JEFFREY DEITCH – an ‘outsider’ . .
then what do you call . . MARK ENGER ???
Redneck ?
Lower East Side cowboy . . legend – that you never heard of ?

so, when I get so down on WALTER, and all those other status quo ‘critics’ – mouthing off their bs & highly predictable garbage – in the mainstream cesspool of the NYC artworld – it’s because of the really great AMERICAN MASTERS – like MARK ENGER aka EXPLODING SKY WORLDWIDE, who never had a chance in hell – though I did my best to scream his name . . out loud, and to Walter, too.
who could have helped bring his work to the front page, but totally dropped the ball.

cyril-mazard-going-home
CYRIL MAZARD, ‘GOING HOME’, 2011
amen, RIP . . MARK.

mark-enger-nov-11-2006
RIP, MARK ENGER. born 1963, Fort Still, OKLAHOMA, died 2011 Newark, New Jersey.
that made him 44 yrs at death. sad, sad beyond the beyond.

someone told me last week, that it’s not just really . . ALL about what you did in your lifetime that matters – but who remains, to tell your story !!
I’m – hoping that’s true.

~ADRIEN BRODY, ALFREDO MARTINEZ . . street sighting today !!

ALFREDO MARTINEZ .. . CAUGHT RED-HANDED, DOING THE ART HUSTLE – IN THE FLESH !!
IN THE STREET !!
TODAY !!

on a day that might or might not be ‘terrorist’ auspicious, being that a New Jersey transit train ploughed into the Hoboken transit station – killing one, wounding more than a 100, and basically destroying the infrastructure of the station that the PATH system also depends on . . .
speeding train, accident ? and under just what kind of accident might that fall – suicidal driver ?
or: terrorist attack . . as in . . . sabotaged brakes ?
the truth has yet to surface.

all I know is, the last time I spoke of Alfredo, was just a week or so ago, the 9-11 – 15th Anniversary & I had posted his 9-11 ‘Welcome to the Playground of the Fearless’ – card/poster !!

and, seriously, there was a virtual army of heavily armed military when I came into the city, last Tues for Walter’s talk – at Journal Sq. something was up . . already. the place was obviously on high alert – it was crawling with armed soldiers. there were even a mass of cops and heavily armed military on the PATH 33rd St. track, (Alfredo would have pissed his pants to see so many guns), and in fact – the 33rd train had been switched over to the WTC track, so . . . ????
if you see something – say something ?

but getting back to . . . . ALFREDO & his . . . guns !!!!!!!

my good friend JAN ALBERT, the writer and Emmy award-winning producer . . .
told me she saw . . ALFREDO MARTINEZ and ADRIEN BRODY on 24th St. in Chelsea, between 6th & 7th Avenues today, SEPT 29, 2016 at 2 PM.

ALFREDO was showing ADRIEN some of his large scale ‘gun’ paintings, “about 7 or 8 of them. Alfredo actually had some Latino workers helping him pull them out of a doorway, and Adrien was perusing them – on the street.” !!!

of course my intrepid friend went right up to Alfredo and said, “I know who you are – you’re Alfredo, Nancy’s friend.” – to which Alfredo replied: “YEAH, well, we’re a little busy here . . ‘”.

she said Adrien was a little nicer, when she then turned to him, and said, “I know you, from when you were 6 – your mom SYLVIA PLACHY was the photographer for the Village Voice (!!) – when I worked there & we were friends,”
to which Adrien cheerfully replied: “sounds like you know everybody”, to which she replied, “I pretty much do.”

and she does !!

ps: and, lucky they weren’t arrested, bye the way. does the word: CHINA . . ring a bell ????

and in fact, don’t laugh.
JAN told me there were 2 heavily armed soldiers stationed outside her door, like a friggin WWII war zone . . . when she left her loft – on 23rd St this am. that block on 23rd street was the site of last week’s pressure cooker bomb – find.

guns in the news, and . . the Village Voice,
lol, poor Walter Robinson, taken down by a Village Voice writer back in the day, only to return the favor to countless other innocents – later at artnet.

BUT EVEN MORE . . LURID:

Walter Robinson – an ‘outsider’ artist ?
damn.
does that mean, you can talk about . . WALTER, and ALFREDO – in the same breath ????

NEW YORK CITY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

~WALTER ROBINSON . . DOWNTOWN MAVERICK

from ‘spin’ painter . . to ‘spin’ doctor – in the flash of one lousy sentence by KIM LEVIN.

walter-robinson-self-interest-spin-painting
WALTER ROBINSON, ‘Self-Interest’, 1968. Enamel on canvas, 36 x 36 in.

the other interesting topic that came up was . . outsider vs insider art.
apparently someone had slung the term ‘outsider artist’ Walter’s way. yeah, and Walter was right to blow that off. I mean, how do you call someone who’s so deeply embedded in the production, intellectual & currency capital of the art scene . . . an ‘outsider’. he’s not an uneducated folk artist.
he’s just somebody who thinks outside the ‘careerist’ box. or at least – maybe he tries to follow a commercially-driven, success-calling – but failed.
just because, just because his inner instincts . . told him so.
and I guess that’s why we are looking at his art today, and not yours !!

walter-robinson-spin-paintings
looking at WALTER ROBINSON’s early ‘spin’ paintings.
when only one sold back in the 80s, he went on to become a ‘spin’ doctor – instead !!!!!
aka . . hack / chimp / reporter/ editor.

walter-robinson-the-heart-of-the-climate
WALTER ROBINSON, ‘The Heart of the Climate’, 1986. Enamel on canvas, 36 x 36 in.

well at least they called you an ‘outsider artist’ – ‘they’ just call me an . . ‘outsider’.
meanwhile I’m jumping loops over their heads.
and trust me, bro – you are too.

you even began to wonder how Walter’s work even got into DEITCH PROJECTS in the first place, when JEFFREY brought up: “from an art dealer’s point of view . . . why didn’t you paint these larger ? I would have / someone would have shown them ?”
classic art dealer’s line from way back, or what ?!!

Walter just replied, “I dunno, that’s a lot of paint, esp when you consider it’s not just 6 x 8 feet, we’re talking, it’s also the square footage.” !!!!!!!

damn, if Walter wasn’t a bloomin’ Millennial, ahead of his time – and he didn’t even know it.

walter-robinson-antonia-in-snowsuit-painting
WALTER ROBINSON, ‘Untitled (Antonia with Red lips)’, 1984. Acrylic on canvas. 18 x 18 in.

Walter also brought up the word . . authentic. as in, “when I painted my daughter, Antonia – I felt it was more authentic”, and luminous, and crazy . . radiant !!

Walter just must have this crazy, tapped down inner life – is all I can say.

walter-robinson-red-kitty
WALTER ROBINSON, ‘Untitled (Red Kitty), 1982, Acrylic on canvas, 54 x 36 in.

I still remember seeing this painting at a show back in the 80s – and wanting to buy it, but Simon chose another piece, a wild, and very dry (humor) still life with wheat or something . . just as good.
but that’s how vividly this painting struck me.

hello, kitty !!!!!!

if thinking outside the ‘careerist’ box, and giving voice to your inner demons & lust/angels . . is being an ‘outsider’ – well then, that sounds like a pretty good word – to me !!

~WALTER ROBINSON . . in dialog

“I unleashed a lot of evil on the world” ~ WALTER ROBINSON
at his artist talk, yesterday evening at DEITCH PROJECTS.
Tues Sept 27, 2016.

and, he wasn’t joking . . . !!

walter-robinson-alison-gingeras-jeffrey-deitch-sept-27-2016-nyc
ALISON GINGERAS, WALTER ROBINSON & JEFFREY DEITCH . . .
at Walter’s ‘unscripted’ !! artist talk, that took place in his traveling retrospective/exhibit, which is now up at Deitch Projects, thru Oct 22, 2016.
Alison was the moderator.
behind Walter, is his early ‘spin’ painting, the aptly named . . ‘Vacation from the Self’, 1986.
Enamel on canvas. 36 x 36 in.

Walter was pretty funny, for a very Oklahoma-born, Canada Dry Ginger Ale kind of guy. a lot of what was the funniest stuff went right over the audience’s ‘collective’ head, because they thought . . well, he must be joking, but haha no siree – he was not !!!!!

walter-robinson-revenge-at-deitch-prjojects
I was, more than – pleasantly surprised to see my ‘used-to-have-been-mine-in-the-early-80s’ . . ‘REVENGE’ – a star of the show !!
(at center).
WALTER ROBINSON, ‘Revenge’, 1982. Acrylic on board, 40 x 30 in.

oh my god, how many countless careers did he cut short – just because he was in a bad mood !! from fighting with Charlie F !! or because he was snubbed, or just because he was bored & most likely . . . jealous, or worse . . intellectually uninspired ?
not to mention “not paid enough’ – even though he was the only one at artnet – to get a salary.
ah, the critics’ life in NYC.
he did let on . . that writing those ‘WEEKEND REPORTS’ (at artnet) were “hard work” . . .
and, thank god for … INSTAGRAM !!!!!!!!!!
no words needed . . here.
but, he still doesn’t post anything really remarkable & about to blow the world apart – Walter always puts white bread on his sandwiches !!

though he did post a photo of deep sleepers / ghost army RIP: SIMON CERIGO, and DAN ASHER’S work . . from our ‘UNDER THE VOLCANO’ 3 person pop-up show, of JUNE 2015, on his Instagram feed – but he didn’t post a photo of my work, huh ?!!!!

he did graciously let drop – that he was . . ‘sexist’ !!
and, dammit – he is.

bromo-walter-robinson-painting-1984
WALTER ROBINSON, ‘Bromo’, 1984. Acrylic on canvas, 56 x 36 in.

I mean, I am the one who worked for him, for FREE !! for 3 friggin years at artnet – producing his best cutting edge report, so you’d think, just as a courtesy ?????
but, no.

and trust me, though I will always kiss his feet – for giving me the chance to prove my presentient insights were golden bread crumbs strewn on the steep path of art collecting – when god knows, NOBODY else would, it was not a pain-free . . ‘workplace’.

he brought me to tears, 3 times !!
I mean it, and if you know me – I’m pretty hard-core from being kicked around, ignored & basically under-estimated since forever – so that’s a pretty big bottle of poison pills, to swallow. and usually it was over something stupid like . . I “had brought in too many musician photos” !!
“Devendra Banhart . . who ?” / “Joe Bradley in Cheeseburger – who ?”
haha, talk about famous last words.
when I insisted the photos go up, or I go out. he bellowed: out !! & said I was giving him a headache – but sure enough, the photos would appear alive and well, kicking under my name, within the next day or so.

and crowning touch: he is the guy, who in true blue New York City Anna Wintour diva style . . . finally fired me for being: “too successful” !!
I kid you not, his exact words.
and with 2 small kids to feed, and 2 days before Christmas.

I wasn’t getting paid, but I had hustled ads from the new galleries I was bringing to the table: CANADA, and BILL BRADY’S ATM, just to name a few.
(W MAG – are you listening ?)

walter-robinson-society-nurse-2011-painting
WALTER ROBINSON, ‘Society Nurse’, 2011. Acrylic on canvas. 48 x 36 in.

of course, he did go on to drop that his own career, at Metro Pictures in the 80s, had been cut-off at the knee – before it even began, by a one-sentence ‘diss’ from . . “KIM LEVIN in the VILLAGE VOICE. I only sold one painting, in a show of spin paintings, and that was that.”
bro, so sad. welcome to the art world.
so what does he do ?
he sticks to . . writing and art journal editing – I guess, just one big . . mean nurse – forever !!
with a big huge . . needle.
though he does come off ‘roly poly’ to the mostly . . half-lifes – he promotes.
let’s just say it – more nicely: try making money off following Walter, excepting the Nancy years !!
good luck.
and yeah, he said it a few times, writing all those endless weekend-wrecking, word-driven art screeds – was a headache.
he seems much happier now.

and what’s to complain about ?

what a great show !!!!!!!!! freenemy !!!!!!!!

walter-robinson-a-matter-of-taste-painting
WALTER ROBINSON, ‘A Matter of Taste’, 1985. Acrylic on canvas. 50 x 25 in.
and another – ‘used-to-be-mine’ – back in the mid 80s !!!!

THERE’S . . . NO DENYING:

WALTER ROBINSON . . . is a GREAT, GREAT UNSUNG AMERICAN PAINTER.

A CLASSIC.

OK, I don’t like the ‘Wayne Thiebaud’ pieces so much, the flannel shirts, the shoes, the hamburgers, but wow – everything else !! r-a-d-i-a-n-t !!

so, maybe . . just like it was actually a GIFT – that Walter fired me, and . . ultimately FREED ME !!!
to write what I want, and post what I want – and . . GET ALL THE CREDIT !!
because NO, I was not just the dog photog who was told where to go, I was the event photog who brought in the goods !!

it might have burnt Walter to be ‘let go’ at artnet, but then he actually had no other choice, but to slog the paintings once again, and . . here we are !!!

someone in the rather repressed, ok – well-behaved ??? audience, (where was the ghost of party-boy big mouth Simon – when you most need him ?!!) . . .
piped up and asked Walter . . where were all his porn paintings ???
oh yes !!!!!!
Walter answered something to the effect that . . “I guess ‘they’ wanted to keep the show . . presentable” ?

say what ???

WALTER !!! – you’ve got a stash of early PORN PAINTINGS hidden away – BRING THEM ON !!!!!!!!

NANCY SMITH with her . . JACK GOLDSTEIN PAINTING, ca. 1986

jack-goldstein-lightning-painting-1986-w-nancy-smith
this is me & Kate . . with our JACK GOLDSTEIN ‘LIGHTNING’ PAINTING. it turned out to be the biggest one that he, Jack produced. we bought it in 1986, maybe 1985. somewhere in that time frame, for about $10,000 directly from Metro Pictures.
We sold it for something like $60,000 . . just a few short years later. we needed money to feed the kids.
Simon sold it way too soon, like pretty much everything else, but that was the . . downside of Simon’s brilliance, and let’s just leave it – at that.

~WALTER ROBINSON & SIMON CERIGO: & the Chimp Reporter Painting, 1986

simon-cerigo-walter-robinson-chimp-painting
SIMON CERIGO, with WALTER ROBINSON’s very funny . . ‘Chimp Reporter’ painting.
in his short-lived . . Simon Cerigo Gallery – 212 Ave A in the East Village, circa 1986.
that’s a box of Huggie diapers for baby Kate, on the floor beside him . . that’s how I can date it.

Simon probably purchased well over 10 paintings, if not more – of Walter’s work in the 80s and early 90s. as soon as he had a couple of grand, he’d buy another. the first few were bought straight from Metro Pictures, the rest directly from Walter himself. Walter’s gig at Metro sort of fell apart – almost as soon as it started. we were never quite sure if Walter sabotaged himself, there were rumors he was contrarian in terms of what the gallery wanted. or, if it was because ELI BROAD, who was buying up the Pictures generation, like Cindy Sherman and Gregory Crewdson, from the same Metro Pictures gallery, like they were dime store candy . . just totally, TOTALLY . . missed the boat on Walter ?

I’ll spare you my usual rant on ELI BROAD, that he’s nowhere close to what he’s chalked himself up to be . . but, hey: what do I know ????? lol !!!!!
SIMON CERIGO over . . ELI BROAD – any day !!
we had over the years, just to name a few, that ELI does not !! the original ‘LOVE HOTEL’ large color photo by MARIKO MORI, JACK GOLDSTEIN’S largest ‘lightning’ painting, the first VANESSA BEESCROFT paintings of Amish-looking women, and . . plenty of DAN ASHER works, another sleeper . . . no doubt.
and then of course, from 2002 onwards, ELI has nothing on . . art lovers !!
game over, dude.

anyways . . they, Walter’s paintings . . became a really hard sell, except for his sister, Helene the doctor !! this painting could not be sold for love or . . money. even Helene didn’t want it. I didn’t get why it didn’t fly out the window – it was a riot . . . and, neither did Simon. he desperately tried to sell it many many times over, for at least 15 years !! I think at one point Walter even began to think that Simon’s relentless flogging of his work – was a liability !!

so: too bad Simon didn’t live to see his instincts . . slam a home run / thanks in good part to BARRY BLINDERMAN, also an early die-hard, hard-core fan of Walter’s from back in the day, the early Lower East Side days – who put together that fab huge traveling retrospective, that got the ball rolling. and also produced that wonderful catalog – which just keeps on snowballing & Walter’s work . . is finally selling – like pancakes.
finally, my ole artnet ‘boss’ is getting his true blue dues – after spending way too long talking about . . other people’s art.
and in part, being dismissed, because of that.
don’t even get me . . started.

I wonder what Walter is going to be like – as a millionaire ?

and, just in case you weren’t aware of it: it was Walter himself, who bestowed that mortifying handle: artloversnewyork – on me !!
so . . . watch out !!
Revenge of the Under-Rated . . has just begun !!

life ‘Under the Volcano’ of the Lower East Side, in the 80s & 90s is about . .
to . . . e-r-u-p-t !!
