‘MICRO’ PROJECTIONS . . as in / VIDEOS – on INSTAGRAM – SAY A LOT !!
& TRAVEL . . FAR !!
what can I say . .
the world is getting smaller and smaller, viewing ‘screens’ are getting smaller & smaller, BUT !!
the opportunities for someone to see your work, are conversely getting: larger & larger.
& that’s a . . good thing.
I SAW 3 . . . NEW VIDEO SCREENINGS, this weekend.
one was via Instagram, of a larger video screening projected unconventionally onto a quilt block !!
in a gallery in Atlanta, Georgia.
kind of like . . those nesting Russian eggs.
it was a tiny ‘video loop’ . . of a larger ‘video loop projection’ in an installation, that caught my attention.
in a city far away, Atlanta, Georgia – so there was no way I could have caught it otherwise.
so, maybe I saw 4 new !!!!!! videos / this weekend ????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
all different – SIZES !!!!!!!!!
the next video I saw, projected onto a good sized wall, in a very hardcore / innovative alternative ‘gallery’ space in Chinatown, I actually viewed through the mini mall/storefront glass window.
while the final viewing, took place in a more conventional gallery space, but with a ‘shockingly’ great big screen – upfront & personal !!
let’s start one with the one I saw, in a rather ‘new wave’ fashion / that is, by social media ‘remote’, as in:
I caught a digital / video clip glimpse of . . an installation, by way of a beautifully shot – video posted to Instagram by @mountain.bushwick . . aka MICHAEL FLEMING.
MOUNTAIN is an artist-run space, so why the shock, that it’s founder/director – can produce a pretty mean . . . video clip ?!!
the subject: the ‘lyrical quilt – video projection’ . . by MICHI MEKO & SAIGE ROWE, curated by SELENA GALLERY . . .
for a 2 part concurrent exhibition – now up at DAY & NIGHT PROJECTS, in Atlanta, Georgia.
SELENA GALLERY . . is an artist-run space co-founded by ANJULI RATHOD & OLIVIA SWIDER, located in Bushwick, Brooklyn, N.Y.
from . . .
‘TWO EXHIBITIONS from BUSHWICK to ATLANTA’
‘In Time of Silver Rain: MICHI MEKO and SAIGE ROWE’
curated by Bushwick’s . . SELENA GALLERY
runs thru MARCH 12, 2017
DAY & NIGHT PROJECTS, ATLANTA, GEORGIA
read background & see images: ‘IN TIME OF SILVER RAIN’ – DAY & NIGHT PROJECTS

MICHI MEKO . . salvaged the vintage quilt / SAIGE ROWE . . made the video.
the video is projected onto one block – of the old farm quilt. quite a pretty idea.
especially because the video is all about greenery, & dirt & . . roots. the ’round’ circle . . of ‘life’.
the ‘sampling’ of organic growth.
very very moving. quick. graphic, fresh. & lyrical.
factual.

I quite liked this particular frame / because although the woman’s hand is about to pull up a ‘rooted’ plant, the gesture mimics a woman’s hand, sewing – a quilt.
the farmer & the quiltmaker – have very intertwining history.

the big picture / nature / mother earth.
in it’s best, and yet sadly . . most threatened ‘glory’.
please. don’t put up that damn parking lot.
NOTE ALL 3 IMAGES ABOVE: are screengrabs from a ‘micro’ video loop – of the DAY & NIGHT PROJECTS, ‘BUSHWICK TO ATLANTA’ exhibit / that was posted to Instagram by @mountain.bushwick, aka MICHAL FLEMING.
thank you !!
NOTE: the MICHI MEKO & SAIGE ROWE ‘quilt – video projection’, was curated by SELENA GALLERY, Bushwick.

1866 QUILT – by LUCY FROST . . .
@afamuseum / American Folk Art Museum: “This patriotic quilt features an embroidered image of ABRAHAM LINCOLN (center) with the inscription ‘Old Abe’ underneath.
Made just a year after his assassination, the quilt also depicts an embroidered pictogram featuring a pile of logs and an axe, representing Lincoln’s childhood home – a one-room log cabin, and image of the White House.”

@metamercianwing:
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY to LOUIS COMFORT TIFFANY,
born on this day, FEB 18, 1848 !!
ALTHOUGH TIFFANY worked in nearly every artistic medium, including painting, watercolor, ceramics, furniture, textiles, and metalwork, he is best known for his work in glass.
A TRUE VISIONARY, TIFFANY worked with expert glass makers to create new glass formulas that resulted in revolutionary colors and textures, such as the rough Lava or ‘volcanic’ glass used for this bowl.
Bowl, by Louis C. Tiffany and Tiffany Studios, ca. 1908.”
IMAGE & TEXT: via Instagram @metamericanwing / MET MUSEUM AMERICAN WING.
note: I’m thinking it should read, “worked in nearly every artistic medium”, . . . available during his life.
he handled many precious materials that not easy to get hold of today, and many skills have been lost; on one side – on the other . . digital imaging, or even acrylic, or even spray paint – was to be, born.

“IN new prints on aluminum and single-channel videos – many of which use advertising campaigns as their underlying sources – ‘stage blind’ considers notions of invisibility as reflected in content as well as with respect to the limits of the human eye and its technological extensions, including the camera, lens, software, and screen.” – gallery website

TWO EXHIBITS . . from BUSHWICK / ‘MIRROR, MIRROR’ & ‘IN TIME OF SILVER RAIN’
GOING TO: DAY & NIGHT PROJECTS / in ATLANTA, GEORGIA !!!!!
OPENS TO-NITE / FRI FEB 17, 2017 / 7-10 PM

DAY & NIGHT PROJECTS IS PLEASED TO PRESENT:
‘MIRROR, MIRROR: NICHOLAS STEINDORF & RAUL VALVERDE’ – curated by MOUNTAIN, BUSHWICK
‘IN TIME OF SILVER RAIN: MICHI MEKO & SAIGE ROWE’ – curated by SELENA, BUSHWICK

the show runs thru MARCH 12, 2017
DAY & NIGHT PROJECTS, 585 WELLS ST. SW, ATLANTA, GEORGIA
MOUNTAIN and SELENA . . are both artist-run spaces in the Bushwock neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York.
MOUNTAIN . . introduces Atlanta viewers to New York-based artists, NICHOLAS STEINDORF and RAUL VALVERDE.
“This exhibition is about simulated realities, intangible form, and the reflective nature of abstraction.”
interestingly, although SELENA is a Bushwick-based gallery, they will be curating a show with 2 Georgia-based artists, and I guess there’s some inherent dialogue, just in that.
SELENA . . will pair Georgia artists MICHI MEKO and SAIGE ROWE, in a concurrent show whose title ‘IN TIME OF SILVER RAIN’ “shares the same title as LANGSTON HUGHES’ poem from 1947, which speaks to a time of change when winter is ending and spring is beginning.”
