JEFFREY DEITCH . . presented a mini-retrospective of Walter’s work, this past SEPT 2016.
in his large space on Wooster St. in Soho.
it really helped move Walter’s work . . up the food chain.

I saw a documentary this weekend on Native American basket making, also . .
not, a good sign.
the master craftsman/artist basket weaver said that . . the 2 trees that are essential for the weaving strips, used since the beginning of Native times, are the ash and the birch tree.
both trees are under assault by deadly, invasive out-of-control & prob beyond control (!!) micro beetles. genocide of trees is the catch-phrase.

he didn’t seem that concerned, because he added . . only about 1/4 of the trees around where he lives, have been destroyed – so far.
how much longer til they are all gone ?

not to forget, all the influences brought to bear, to this new country, by succeeding waves of immigration.
& unless you were a Native American, and Emily D. was surely NOT !! she comes from a line of immigrants.

it’s such a dynamic flux.
even just consider: the Protestant heart of Emily’s early Americana vs. . . Emmanuel Limon’s Mexican / South L.A. born . . Christ iconography / Spanish colonist, etc. etc.
which is a whole topic in and of, itself.
and also: what makes 18th/19th C Europeans . . more entitled to populate America, than . . indigent South Americans ? which would be the natural . . continental geo / bio flow ???

somehow, ‘hell bent / heaven sent’ . . seems like a phrase, Emily Dickinson might relate to.
