OPENING NIGHT – PIX !!!!

REBECCA MORGAN . . with the limited edition, custom design ‘Corn Cob Bumpkin’ ‘Handkerchief’/ ‘bandanna’,
ROCK SOUP produced for her, $25.
yes !! of course, I got one – when they first came out.
see: ROCK SOUP

Rebecca Morgan, hand-built porcelain jugs.
I had only seen these in photographs / it was such a great exhilaration to examine them in the – round.
I am also, absolutely c-r-a-z-y – for the gallery’s . . authentic / raw, up-cycled space !!
these are raw, new visions / like most of the work on this gallery’s agenda – and, they are not quite ready to be behind static, sacred ‘museum’ display cases yet !!
come on . . art world, let the new art: rebel, revel, and . . reveal !!
a little bit first, before you encase them – with ‘certified’ branding.

now that’s a . . . fierce one.
more like a tantric Tibetan Buddhist god of death, change . . & warning / a guardian.
than a clueless, horny . . ‘ruralist’, lol.
REBECCA MORGAN, ‘Oatmeal Jug’, 2015.
Porcelain / 6.50 x 4 x 3.50 in.
($1,400.)

she might be a dirty girl (!!), but she sure looks sweet – to me.
REBECCA MORGAN, ‘Dirty Girl’, 2014.
oil on panel / 20 x 18 in.
($2,800.)

this bloke – was a fav.
just something about how the face is modeled, really fascinated me.
prob coming from the use of . . graphite, as well as oil paint.
REBECCA MORGAN, ‘Hunter or Hipster Male’, 2012.
Graphite & oil on panel / 26 x 22 in.
($3,200.)

MARK THOMAS GIBSON, with his found puppy Mars, short for Marsden Hartley.

now here is a guy who just radiates with a secret, street smart, folktale, & maybe even, political . . sense of humor, and an down-to-earth self-awareness.
L: MARK THOMAS GIBSON, ‘Self-Portrait – Beach Front’, 2019.
ink on paper, 55 x 76 in.
($8,000.)
R: MARK THOMAS GIBSON, ‘Self-Portrait – Sunshine State’, 2019.
Ink on paper, 55 x 76 in.
($8,000.)

MARK THOMAS GIBSON, ‘Self-Portrait – The Quiet Storm’, 2019.
Ink on paper / 55 x 76 in.
($8,000.)
it kinda says to me . . I give-up / this world is nuts.
it’s raw, but tender / cartoonish – but straightforward.
very thrilling, in fact. in a quiet, under-the-radar way.
great draftsmanship / great compositioon, but above all – heart-strings pulling / funny.
come on, lighten up world / crack a few jokes.
it’s got that gentle humor of ‘Uncle Remus’.
but make no mistake, underneath it all – is an abstract painter !!
just consider the lyrical wash of the color, and the dreamy yet tight, infra-structure.

little did I know what kind of busy bee / hard-core rebel artists hornets nest,
I was about to kick over – when I innocently stepped into this upstate scene / acting on an invite from Daniel Giordano & Samuel Boehm . . / of Vicki !!
the most fun scene right now, no holds bared.
the art & the artists . . amped up / vibrant, dynamic & well . . . they sucker-punch it – to ya.
every time.
no doubt about it.

~9-11 Quilt . . ‘Lightning Strikes’

9-11 NEVER FORGET.

this is one of my quilt repair projects.
it is airing on the terrace of my former ‘penthouse’ apt,
on the 20th floor of FDR & Grand, Lower East Side NYC, where I used to live from about 1996-2004,
till we got gentrified out.
it’s a really shallow terrace, so I had to really contort myself to get the doomed towers into the photo.
you can see the kind of damage I was repairing, on the left.
it was a real & very old, farm ‘utility’ quilt, meaning it was made quickly, and to be used.
one way you can tell that, is the fact that it was ‘tied’ with blue yarn, in regular intervals across the surface, instead of ‘quilted’ with hand stitching, which is way more laborious.
I bought it, all raggedy . . upstate in a rural junk shop for $10.

of course, the most amazing thing about this quilt & this photo . .
is that, this old frontier quilt pattern is called . .’Lightning Strikes’.
it was used both as a warning & a ‘protection from’ . . barn fires on the prairies / which were apparently way too common & of course, devastating.
you can see the ‘zig zag’ of the fire – easier in this photo.

sometimes, I go really creative in my quilt repairs / this one was ‘just’ getting the old, worn quilt strong again.
and I’m glad I did.
it had so much history to begin with, and apparently it was to live on . .
into this century as well.

I hand-stitched all the ‘piecing’ parts & actually hand-stitched an ‘x’ into every single tiny black dot,
because, due to its age, and the kind of dyes they used back in the 1800s / esp with regard to black,
the black areas were quite worn-out or gone altogether / quilt & textile archivists call that: drop out.
the complete repair – took at least 2 years.

p.s. over the years I’ve learnt, that quilts & art in general – are way more profound, esp as they ‘play out’ against society and the times,
than the contemporary, logical . . human mind can – imagine.

p.s.s. I saw the 2nd plane come in, over that snip of the East River, turn around mid-flight . . and barrel
at full speed – into the second World Trade Center tower. until that happened, on TV they were ‘saying’ it was a ‘helicopter crash’.
after that, with all the media cameras focused on the scene, the attack was quite obvious & could not be denied.

~DANIEL GIORDANO . . STUDIO VISIT / NEWBURGH, NY

DANIEL GIORDANO – STUDIO VISIT
AUG 10, 2019

DANIEL GIORDANO’s studio . . is in an old red brick industrial building / on the seedy side of Newburgh.
well-worn, the building looks to hold a lot of local history, but for him in particular – as it was home to his family’s coat manufacturing factory for several generations.
well, manufacturing coats, unless you are in China, Pakistan or Viet Nam, ain’t gonna get you nowhere this century, but maybe re-translate that entrepreneurship, hard work, and skills . . factoring in the new (serious) art influences in the surrounding community, and well . . maybe art – will win the day.
looks like a win win – to me.
ps: VICKI . . is on the ground floor storefront.
mark your calendar: TED GAHL – ‘Zen Paintings’ . . opens SAT OCT 12.

DANIEL . . has the whole top / 3rd floor. eat your heart out – Brooklyn.

plenty of room, to go big / catch . . that power and the ‘fury’.

work in progress.

cannoli / and . . cream.

another metal pipe / ‘pole’ piece.
this one looking very . . bio.

Theo and Daniel.
when a (young) collector, gets to see where the magic happens – it’s an awesome thing.

I hadn’t know Daniel was so into working with clay.
this is such a cry. such a call to . . ‘death’.
to depth of soul.
to . . wanting.

my feeling was: a lot of the raw power of the works . . comes not only from the freedom of working in, such a huge, old industrial space / but also from, all the aggregate ‘conversations’, between the different projects, and diverse materials.
‘formalism’ – as in creative, dedicated formalism / it’s funny how it thrives in dedicated . . ‘chaos’.

diverse materials, is not the word / diverse diverse diverse diverse comes closer.
many coats / of many colors. Daniel in the Lions Den.
man-made, artist-shaped, collaged, stood-up, assembled / found.
even . . animal parts.

even . . futuristic.

yep, Daniel . . in the Lion’s den.

DANIEL GIORDANO OUTDOOR SCULPTURE . . NEWBURGH, NY / NEWBURGH SCULPTURE PROJECT
Aug 10, 2019

Danilel Giordano, and his other outdoor sculpture – on view this summer in Newburgh.
the most interesting aspect of this 2nd outdoor sculpture, which stood in the heart of town,
as opposed to dominating a college garden grounds, (and, facing the water, btw) . . was not so much the visual or conceptual impact, as its . . fluidity.
like a totem, or a flag pole . . it held its ground as the world spun around it / 360 degrees.
and, as it did so – it made you . . look more / and realize the place / in the moment.
with greater awareness, as opposed to just . . you know, walking down the street.

note: the ‘Gregory Crewdson’ . . like, historic, small North-eastern town, movie theater on the right / RITZ.

apparently, the sculpture had inadvertently – become ‘interactive’.
somebody had tied a red kerchief – to it !!
I’m taking that to mean, in the greater sense / that the ‘tribe’ of the entire town . . had taken note / of this crazy, compelling . . proud wild and free ‘stake’, planted among their midst.

DANIEL GIORDANO, ‘Self-Portrait While Fixated on the Juicy Lips of Megan’s Eclipse’, 2019.
moisturizing face masks, copper, steel, steel wool, azurite, iron ore, various plastics, cable ties, bells from Santa’s sleigh, stone, railroad spikes, wire hanger, cattails, Tang drink mix, epoxy, spit balls (toilet paper, saliva, phosphorescent acrylic, acrylic polymer emulsion) / 79 x 60 x 36 in.

Daniel Giordano – is not a minimalist, when it comes to his materials / he’s more of a . . grab this earth / and run with the ‘fury’ kind of guy.
all part & parcel of . . historic references / esp industrial era vs digital / rage about the ‘machine’ / current society etc etc / and def, all about put down that device and come see the thing.
experience the ‘fury’, thunder, and yes: sweetness. lust. love. questioning.
in a word: young men on the cusp – of taking over.

the circle dance – begins / the unexpected camouflage kicks in / as you move around the ‘pole’.
it’s most definite a kind of anti-Koons / anti-Urs Fischer / call-to-arms . . in its own ‘thrown-together’ way.

this part of Newburgh is so interesting, there is still a real rural / urban . . sweep.

Newburgh . . is also considered part of the ‘Hudson Valley’ – as the thriving, aggregate art scene upstate refers to itself / DIA Beacon helped kick the gears.
my first experience was through a more underground route – the BOBO COLLECTIVE: ‘HOT MUD FEST’ of Aug 2017, an highly wild interactive music, performance / art show . . on a big ole farm, with a creek running through it / Spook Rock Road, Hudson.
see: Newburgh, NY

though, what makes Daniel Giordano so interesting, is that he is a native-born son . . of the area.

now that’s a . . self-portrait, if I ever did see one.

the fluidity of the basically stationary, rigid, metal ‘pole’ – within its environment / was a big part of the experience.
so contrarian / of a visual fact.
that’s my daughter.

well you could gaze, and walk around the piece in a trance, for quite a while.
and then, suddenly . . you are on the other side / and the ride is over.
another part of my art loving tribe: my son.
my kids are also natives, but of another ‘historic’ NY art scene / both being born on the gritty Lower East Side, of Manhattan in the 80s.
NY is such a huge hub for artists / it’s interesting when you bump into a true native-born son.

Daniel . . and the small art world tribe / that drove up that Saturday from NYC, BROOKLYN / & NJ.
what a great day for a car trip, nice ride. good roads. pleasant scenery / not much more than an hr. each way.
everybody had a great time.
including my big poochie, Zora. a 100 lb. American Akita long coat / sometimes called a woolie coat.
and, obviously very down with the trip – too.

a dystopian sight, yet something very sexy about it.
from this angle, it looked like a slipper.
something soft, a pliable thing, that you could slip your foot into, if you were . . a giant.
I though that was maybe just me, until I read the accompanying wall plaque.
if, the glass slipper fits – wear it !!
