I caught the last weekend . .
& found myself lost – in an enchanted forest.
it was not all . . magic / a sense of impending global doom prevaded the earthly delights,
all our wondrous & diverse . . fauna & flora might just not be around – next decade.
FRANCESCO SIMETI: ‘REFUGIUM’
CURATED by YULIA TOPCHIY
SEPT 13 – OCT 20, 2019
ASSEMBLY ROOM, 191 HENRY ST., LOWER EAST SIDE / CHINATOWN
“In this site-specific installation consisting of ceramics and digital prints on linens that are ever complex, exotic and decorative, Simeti creates a tension between reality and fiction and nature and the artificial through rendering decorative frameworks that emerge from his appropriation of ready-made imagery of printed mass media.
Furthermore, Simeti builds on this work to create artificial habitats where living organisms are trying to adapt to fast changing environments challenged by war and destruction, chaos and climate change, and seek refuge in a new, foreign flora fighting to preserve their own natural beauty and harmony.”

Brooklyn-based Italian artist FRANCESCO SIMETI . . .
with Assembly Room co-founder, and curator of this show . . YULIA TOPCHIY.

“Inspired by his native Sicilian landscape, and the intensely personal, spiritually charged paintings of Charles Burchfield, Simeti collages images of old herbariums from a rich archive of botanical illustrations that he has been assembling for years, weaving them together through a layering process & further digitally manipulating its landscape with images found in newspapers and magazines.”

detail, FRANCESCO SIMETI
a sense of aggression, powered more by survival instincts than anything else, does comes across within the details, and the sharp ‘cut’ edges of the collaged compositions / emphasizes this momentum.

detail, FRANCESCO SIMETI
I really liked, and deeply respect that the artist, and his curator . . were not afraid to use the word: DECORATIVE !!
not too long ago, a ‘bad’ word in high art jargon / no longer . . today, esp with a new-found respect for all things craft / both as in serious skills & DIY / including the big role . . creative design & graphics play in our ever more visually-ruled world, esp on social media with its huge ‘image’ sharing capacity / it’s not just text, that’s driving this world . . forward.

speaking of ‘digital’ . . a careful observer will note the manipulated ‘referencing’ to earlier forms of print-making, including engraving & etching, dot matrix etc / re those old ‘herbiums’, etc.
whether conscious of them or not / these details add a sense of seriousness, a sense of ‘history’ / a contextual ‘weight’ . . to the overall effect.
a graphic ‘deepness’ to the overall visual plane.

the show is site-specific . . in that it’s a narrow space, so to allow for more works, and a sense of depth / the stretched ‘canvases’ are free-standing and stacked against each other (lightly), with the added support of some really simple, but well designed wooden wall supports, which you can see towards the bottom.
front row, at right:
FRANCESCO SIMETI, ‘Helleboraster’, 2019.
Digital print on linen / 57-9/10 x 44-1/10 in.
($8,000)
note: the dominant, strong-looking, (ghostly gray) rigidly upright plant at center, it’s from . . Afghanistan / enough said.

the ceramics are botanical in nature, but very fantastical. and forceful.

Anagama Kiln porcelain / 15-7/10 x 11-4/5 x 15-7/10 in.

SO, YEAH . . . . !!
I DID find . . a car !!

nothing’s better, than a kid . . with a silver Audi.
TED GAHL . . ‘ZEN PAINTINGS’
OPENED SAT OCT 12 / 6 – 9 PM
show runs thru . . NOV 16, 2019 / BY APP’T
VICKI, 327 Liberty St., Newburgh, NY 12550 / www.vicki.fun

TED GAHL
‘Wake up and zen.’

this was my fav piece / it was very ‘passive-aggressive’ inter-active /
& you could even take it home, and it would continue performing, as long as you re-filled the incense.
imagine showing that off – to your friends !!
and ps,it’s aroma fills the room . . like a blanket
like a house on fire, next door . . with the right brand.
very functional, as well as being . . a flat-out art statement.
the fact that it stood vertically / attached upright to a wall,
as opposed to your standard incense holder, which sits on the tabletop /
allowed a very Freudian . . sequence to repeat, over & over.
when first placed in, the reddish velvety incense stick – is as rigid as hell /
pointing right at – you.
I caught here, at the down-time of the endless cycle / of life.
it was also a little bit of an illusion, but extremely realistic, definite based in real time / like a micro-viewing, of a fire.
broken down to / just one full element / an exercise in . . singularity.
in other words, it was very much the dance of the . . MALE.
(written in zen code !!)
TED GAHL, ‘Offering Painting’, 2019.
acrylic on panel, Nag Champa incense / 14 x 11 in.
($2,500)

I think it even comes with a . . free refill ?
this is the one to use / if you want to keep it . . REAL.
the whole room was suffused in hypnotic aroma.
the lay-out of the show / with its sparse presentation, (very) small repeating canvases, non-working wooden bench, & a random ceramic Japanese-like tea bowl, was quite the . . Architectural Digest minimalist / but, that was an illusion.
the ambience was thick as magic / totally smokey / a trippy haze enveloping all.

*thick-as-thieves in the dark, I even caught my on ghost reflection – in the window.
you can catch the BBQ food cart, with its glowing embers, on fire in the night / & also smokey, btw.
reflecting from the other side of the glass window, Zen lightning. Zen arousal. Zen fable.
Zen . . rising ?
*thick-as-theives . . in the night: outlaw / underground
as in, “stealing the hqrd-core art scene away, from . . Brooklyn.”

TED GAH, at center . . .
flanked by the VICKI curators / and co-founders:
(L) SAMUEL BOEHM, and (R) DANIEL GIODANO
Ted Gahl’s ‘Zen Paintings’, behind them.

DAN LOXTON, and DANIEL GIORDANO.
Dan Loxton . . just opened up his own indie curatorial space, upstate.
called Uffizi, it’s a one room “intimate viewing room in the Hudson highlands” /
i.e. in his (rural) house, in Cold Spring, NY.
“Food, refreshments, refinement, skuzzgrime.”
the inaugural show is up now: “Qasi Pink” / Uffizi / Vegan Curry
on view by app’t /OCT 19 – Nov 10 / email: info.uffizi@gmail.com
it’s like . . the proverbial ‘chip’ off the ole marble block / Uffizi, Florence / Uffizi, Cold Spring.
well, Hudson Valley is certainly turning into the bonafide art hub, isn’t ?
see: Qasi Pink aka skuzzgrime on Youtube / with 2 subscribers (!!!)
a ‘touch’ too much nihilist pink . . punk chaos ?
DANIEL GIORDANO, Hudson Valley native, born and bred in Poughkeepsie,
& now based in Newburgh . . will be showing there mid-November.

ROSEMARY, and TED.
I refuse to allow the site, to become – just about . . the men.

meanwhile, outside . . Donald “Witt-it” Whitted was serving up the best fresh grilled turkey tacos ever, only $4 a pop, totally worth it.
Vicki Island food cart ? / no disappointment there.
Donald says he’s grilling up pulled ribs, at the next one.

the live coal fire BBQ / made the early Fall night air, as smokey & crisp – as the show, inside.

TED GAHL, ‘Untitled’, 2019.
acrylic on canvas / in artist’s own frame / 8 x 10 in.
($1,800)
and there I was, expecting to see black line / cartoon drawings.
whack.
ah, living life in the Zen lane / Up-state.
see: more install shots – on the gallery website

including the very non-functional wood bench & . . the very functional / Zen / tea bowl.

“The Northern Runes, and Other Magical Alphabets . . .
Among the Norse and Germanic people there developed a system of writing known as runes. Developed in the early Middle Ages, this system of writing is returning to popularity today (2002), and is especially used in magical workings. There are now many people who do divination with these runes.”

magical, yes. witchcraft / maybe ?
but still . . more protection charm / bird song than . . say, Arabian Nights.

ANTONE KONST, ‘Frog in the Fog’ 2019
oil on canvas / 67 x 37 in.
More ‘Frog and Toad’, than . . GOT / Game of Thrones.
still, gentle is only . . as gentle does.
there’s also greater unknown / fate / in the mystery of life and a new-found vulnerability in birthing . . a human child. that’s why we have Fairy Tales, Cautions & nursery rhymes.

a ‘bracteate, from approx AD 400, which features the ‘charm’ word: ‘ALU’, with a depiction of a horse & a man’s head, & a swastika. apparently the exact meaning of the word ‘Alu’ . . is under some dispute, but it is generally agreed upon to ‘represent’ . . ‘an instance of historical runic magic’. it is the most common of the early runic .. ‘charms’.
source: Alu – wikwi
maybe . . .
it’s a ‘mind-set’ / an empowerment / a spell / a protection ?
the swastika was originally, and in many cultures . . across the globe, a symbol of prosperity & good fortune / well-being esp in the home.
painting – is a mind-set, for sure . . anyways.
usually. . having magic, being magical, or referencing.
this particular night . . shook me up.

Go forth & FORAGE !!!!
see: 28th Annual Jersey City Art & Studio Tour 2019 / OCT 3 – 6, 2019 at various locations – throughout Jersey City, including the Heights !!

hey, y’all !!
meet ERIN JENSEN . . .
my Jersey City Heights – BFF & partner in all things thrifting, funny, family & . . cool.
what can I say ?
some people are just natural-born funny, and innate creative.

well, right off-the-bat funny: Erin is not one drop Irish, she’s from sturdy Welsh & Swiss, with a little Danish thrown in there / immigrant stock . . the tough pioneers who came to this country more than a century ago – to log the forests, settling in the west, Washington State, right on the coast. growing up, she used to visit her maternal grandparents there all the time, so there’s def some of that western folklore in them there genes.
but, she actually grew up in Santa Barbara, California . . so she’s a California girl, through & through. her family home was classic mid-century modern, with a great view of the ocean, and she’s always, always, been interested in art, art history & illustration.
I find the Welsh genes of note / so ancient deeply pagan & magical.
this is so classic – naive ‘femme’ symbolism / or what !!

reaching deep in, I so love art – in the wild.
raw spaces, basement studios, etc, etc.
you know – where they come to life, in the secret spaces.
like mushrooms.

Erin has 2 boys, interestingly . . her hubby Noe is of Mexican descent, growing up on a horse farm, in Oaxaca . . which Erin has visited many times / so you can see the Mexican ‘flores’ influence blooming throughout – both in color palette & folk art subjects, as well.

‘flores’.

this one seems very folk art, but different from the others. she says it’s based on a famous ‘European’ painting. it strikes me as very ‘Russian’ / it reminds me of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’.
which is a funny thought / Old World Northern European meets southern Mexican / via California Beach Boys . . . and comes out: Yiddish ?
Erin Jensen’s work . . .
can be found in the Vietnam Vets Community Center – at Pershing Field, up in the Heights.
the price range on the works is: approx $400-$600.
they are variously, oil or acrylic paint – on canvas.
the show at the Pershing Field venue was curated by long-time / Art Tour organizers: DIANE LOMBARDI & ELAINE JAMES.
so, Yeah, go forth and . . . FORAGE / buy LOCAL !!!!!!!!!!
there’s some real good art – up here in the Heights !!!!!!!!

I had only seen these in photographs / it was such a great exhilaration to examine them in the – round.
I am also, absolutely c-r-a-z-y – for the gallery’s . . authentic / raw, up-cycled space !!
these are raw, new visions / like most of the work on this gallery’s agenda – and, they are not quite ready to be behind static, sacred ‘museum’ display cases yet !!
come on . . art world, let the new art: rebel, revel, and . . reveal !!
a little bit first, before you encase them – with ‘certified’ branding.

now that’s a . . . fierce one.
more like a tantric Tibetan Buddhist god of death, change . . & warning / a guardian.

it kinda says to me . . I give-up / this world is nuts.
it’s raw, but tender / cartoonish – but straightforward.
very thrilling, in fact. in a quiet, under-the-radar way.
great draftsmanship / great compositioon, but above all – heart-strings pulling / funny.
come on, lighten up world / crack a few jokes.
it’s got that gentle humor of ‘Uncle Remus’.
but make no mistake, underneath it all – is an abstract painter !!
just consider the lyrical wash of the color, and the dreamy yet tight, infra-structure.
little did I know what kind of busy bee / hard-core rebel artists hornets nest,
I was about to kick over – when I innocently stepped into this upstate scene / acting on an invite from Daniel Giordano & Samuel Boehm . . / of Vicki !!
the most fun scene right now, no holds bared.
the art & the artists . . amped up / vibrant, dynamic & well . . . they sucker-punch it – to ya.
every time.
no doubt about it.
