~’UNDER THE VOLCANO: SIMON CERIGO, DAN ASHER, NANCY SMITH’ / VIRTUAL DREAM CENTER / ARCHIVE

among the early productions on the Virtual Dream Center archive / 7th up from the bottom

is:
‘UNDER THE VOLCANO’ . . a digital re-creation of an actual indie pop-up of the same name, featuring the 1980s/90s work of SIMON CERIGO (RIP), DAN ASHER (RIP) & myself . . NANCY SMITH, who were all working on the Lower East Side, in its glory days.

Curated by Kate & Theo Cerigo, (Simon & Nancy’s children) the survey exhibit took place in the summer of 2015, running for one huge smash weekend in June, in a large, well-lit storefront in Chinatown, right off Delancey . . on the Bowery. As such it is the first digital re-creation of an actual, archival exhibit on the VDC / Virtual Dream Center platform.
with much thanks to NICHOLAS STEINDORF, who curated & produced the digital version.
(& which is both interactive & free to download / see: VDC homepage)

see: ‘UNDER THE VOLCANO’ – VIRTUAL DREAM CENTER / for more photos & essay clips.

BTW:
the above image is the entry to the actual exhibit . . with Simon’s large ‘Lemon Heads’ t-shirt painting on stretched canvas at left, my spray paint lettering of the title – put directly on the wall the day of, and a typically intense black oil stick ‘portrait/mask’ on treated canvas/paper by Dan.

SIMON CERIGO . . collected, collaged & painted on the pop culture media of the day, including band t-shirts of what was then called ‘new music’ or indie.

SIMON CERIGO . . collages on small stretched canvas. very distressed, even for the day.

NANCY SMITH . . large (blue acrylic paint) drawing / from my early 1980s Tarot card series, and also a self-portrait,
I was pregnant with my daughter, Kate at the time, 1985.
& at right, some large still life, charcoal on paper / all pieces: 38 x 50 in.

DAN ASHER . . oil stick, on large canvas backed paper.

the invite for the 2015 exhibit – was an archival photo of us back in ca. 1981, in Tribeca.

BLINN & LAMBERT / aka NICHOLAS STEINDORF & KYLE WILLIAMS

adjusting to life . . in the Pandemic / is a W.I.P. / Work in Progress !!!
and yeah, W.I.P. rhymes with . . . R.I.P.
we ALL took hits.
loved ones, lost opportunities, loser economy. lingering isolation, closed schools, etc. etc.
even, the wake-up calls (BLM / POLICE BRUTALITY) hit – hard.

~ANTONE KONST . . ‘LOVE DOVE’ / LIGHTHOUSE WORKS / FISHERS ISLAND, NY / UP THRU NOV

ANTONE KONST, ‘LOVE DOVE’, commissioned by Lighthouse Works, Fishers Island, NY
up thru . . NOV 2020.

ANTONE KONST . . recently installed a new large sculpture, commissioned by LIGHTHOUSE WORKS, at the watery entry-way to Fishers Island, NY, a small private island enclave . . accessible only via ferry.

quite a beautiful piece, and not surprising, Antone’s imagination was set free, to sail above the horizons of mind, spirit, and actual land & sea.
composed of something like 1,500+ individual copper discs, the fluttery ‘heart’ must have been inspired by traditional ‘Copper Penny’ . . folk art ?
it’s designed to face & reflect at peak . . the intense glow of the sunset !!

here it is, installed / it looks small in the photo, because . . guess what ?
the ocean is LARGE !!
but look closely, the shiny coppery ‘mobile’ . . is bigger than a house !!
20, or even 30 ft. tall.

whoa !!
but, look !!
that shimmery, fluid copper ‘heart’ . . is actually the metallic back wings, of a cold concrete-looking / stained glass stone sculpture style . . . . totemic / BIRD !!
the dove of the title . . revealed.

it does have an eerie, deep / cold water / Norse sense to it.
like a proud & ancient . . ocean-going boat’s . . Viking figurehead.
and, don’t you wish everybody’s ‘moral compass’ . . was set so solid. true, and straight ?

the body is made from cast cement, which was hand-painted on site.
there is a metal armature supporting the cement.
apparently, Antone actually painted the cement on-site, so he could really narrow down on how the colors . . played with the surroundings. that was such a great, even epic narrative decision, because even from the photos, you can tell they have a real-time ‘reverb’ . . with the cold infinite ocean, and the small outpost island.
it’s not cathedral-colored stained glass, it’s ship-faring ocean colors.
it’s a nice play off the shimmery copper, as well.

the sun-thrown shadows of the wing’s copper discs, throw their own kind of cathedral light – upon the strong, simple bird / a totem-shape, a brave steadfast, look-out bird . . from an old, old fable, from an ancient cold ocean sea-faring land.

bravo, Antone !!!
