TOKYO-based artist SAEKO TAKAGI at the recent opening of her 2nd solo show, titled ‘Saeko Takagi’ – at atm Gallery in Chelsea, March 23, 2007
Photo: Nancy Smith
the show was written up in BLOOMBERG NEWS by KATYA KAZAKINA
March 29 (Bloomberg) — Hot-Pink Portrait
“Young Japanese artist Saeko Takagi represents an alternative to her more famous compatriots like TAKASHI MURAKAMI.
Pop Culture takes a back seat in her sensual acrylic paintings inspired by traditional Japanese calligraphy. For her second show at ATM gallery, Takagi turns to nature and portraits of young girls.
Both subjects are realized with a mix of looseness and precision, yielding playful and lighthearted results.
The paintings of intertwining tree branches incorporate drops of brightly colored
resin throughout, making the works look jewel-like.
Western influence trickles in through Takagi’s colors: Coupled with pastel yellow
and gray are bubblegum pink and green, intense peach and royal blue. It’s a
tender and festive universe worth visiting.
Prices range from $4,500 to $9,000. The show is on view through April 21
at 61B W. 27th St.”

the landscape paintings have … “resin” or what we might call “gloss medium” “jewel-like” dabs of 3-D transparent or translucent glow, which you can just make out throwing off luminous, shiny reflections in the red highlights at the top of this painting. (sort of like – hard candy ‘drops’). The portraits on the other hand, are uniformly luminous in “wash” technique alone.

SAEKO TAKAGI, acrylic on canvas, 28 x 28 ins., featured on the artlovers homepage week of March 27, 2007.
This is Saeko Takagi’s 2nd solo show at atm Gallery. Ms. Takago came in from TOKYO for the opening on March 23rd. The show is still up. running till APRIL 21.
the buzz on the street in Chelsea this past weekend was that: … “Bill sold out the show, or sold pretty much of the show, in the first week, .. or even before the show actually opened ..” Bill Brady actually has several pieces on hand that aren’t even in the show, as Saeko shipped him a whole bunch of canvases rolled up – too many to include in the show ! – ready to be stretched here.
artlovers was lucky enough to happen to walk by, just as the thrill of opening the shipment took place.

… BOBO !!!!!
… when you hear that name: BOBO .. you go go & get yourself there !! wherever it is – it’ll be worth it.
This band gets it huge driving force from guitar player PHIL COTE, but they all rock. The band played recently at the JULEP BAR, a small crowded bar on AVE A in the East Village, for the opening party of the 14th ANNUAL NEW YORK UNDERGROUND FILM FESTIVAL.
They came with a small devoted fan entourage, numbering not more than 12, maybe 24 at most, (….”our biggest audience, ever..”), but soon had the whole place jumping up and down so hard – the ancient wooden floor started to shake so seriously – the place seemed in imminent danger of caving in – right then and there..
they were followed by the MIAMI ICE MACHINE, whose driving force seems to be derived from their lead singer and frontman, GRAHAM WATLING..

… FRANKIE MARTIN gave 3 more performances at CANADA
during the run of her show ….
“FRANKIE” – SAT MARCH 17, 3-6PM
“FREAKOUT” – SAT MARCH 17, 8PM -&-
a “CLOSING DANCE PARTY” – FRI MARCH 23, 5-9PM
‘Frankie Martin – in your dreamz’ – included a performance by Frankie’s “comedic dance troupe” – “FREAKOUT” at the opening, as well, and at which NYC artist ERIKA SOMOYGI was one of the dancers. The most interesting thing, in the show was a riveting loop projection of the 3 girl dance troupe, lead by Frankie, photographed against a water fountain in an urban setting. It also had a “techno” beat soundtrack, that stayed with you, and visual collaged elements swirling in the backgrounds.

… bye the way, were SIENNA MILLER’s handlers channeling EDIE SEDGWICK or FRANKIE MARTIN, ( albeit turned to all-black) when they
dressed her up in this notorious costume for the “FACTORY GIRL” premiere after-party ?

AYA TAKANO at the opening of ‘Little Boy: The Arts of Japan’s Exploding Subculture’,
Japan Society, April 7, 2005
& one of her paintings from that show.
Photos: Nancy Smith
an item on AYA TAKANO first posted on THE BOMB – MARCH 20, 2006.
we can’t get out of our head the buzz that recently surfaced about Ms. Takano from the recent ARMORY ART FAIR 2007, in a NEW YORK TIMES article (published March 3, 2007) – that chronicled the art buying adventures of “new” collector SUSAN HANCOCK.
Her first stop at the fair: ” . . . Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, which is based in
Paris and represents the Japanese artist Aya Takano. Ms. Hancock has been collecting Ms. Takano’s paintings, cartoonish and colorful, for two years.
” … she had already committed to purchasing one large painting.
” … The piece, ‘Stuffed Animal Room’, cost $70,000.
” … “I’m in love with all her paintings, but there were alot … that were very sexually explicit, and I have a bunch of neices who come to visit,” Ms. Hancock said. “The stuffed animals are a lot safer.”
