Will had just partnered up with, and co-opened . . a new rendition / or resurrection of the original / legendary NYC ATM Gallery – with BILL BRADY, the original founder. BILL opened the historic, original, raw & tiny . . ATM space, in 2000 / on a gritty corner of AVE B, in the East Village, when the concept of small, as in very small !! indie galleries – was just percolating.
ANOTHER PLACE . . represents Will’s first solo / gallery venture, and the 2 galleries are side by side, which is quelle FUN !!!
and, YES !!
I do know – that original ATM Gallery time, place, and all the players – very, very well.
I covered that scene for editor WALTER ROBINSON at artnet / from 2002- 2004.
when by 2005 / digital technology had advanced enough – to allow for easy desktop ‘self-publishing’ / artlovers left artnet – to become artloversnewyork.com / in turn, becoming totally indie / independent – itself !!

BAD LUCK TIGER STRIKES / NYC SUBWAY / SAT JAN 15, 2022
DON’T EVER UNDER-ESTIMATE / THE POWER OF YOUNG, CUTTING EDGE CONTEMPORARY ART / especially when it intersects with . . . ANCIENT FOLKLORE.
TURNS OUT . . .
IT WAS A DARK, DARK PRIMAL SATURDAY, the day of my previous post on LARRY LI, and his strong, strong, crimson-red / and, passionate, inaugural show for WILL LEUNG’S new . . and, first solo gallery space / which is located in the still gritty Lower East Side.

Another Place Gallery.
I was hesitant to put words into (Tibetan Buddhist) thought clouds, re the title of the Show, ‘Bad Luck Tiger’ – when I first considered writing up this striking show, so I thought I’d be – just a little bit ‘cavalier’, to lighten the gray overcast day – and, look on the bright side of Bad Luck, stressing how wonderful it was – that such a young and talented, (Chinese-American) artist, based in L.A. & whose works speak to ‘real issues’ . . had found his way into Will’s heart, & thus took a bite out of the Big Apple art scene – along the way.
sadly, sadly my fear & premonitions – came to strange evil fruition.
a vibrant, beautiful, 40 year-old Professional Chinese-American woman, with a whole lot of life before her, a whole lot of living and promise ahead of her – was shoved to her death / into the path of an oncoming subway train, at Times Square station – by a seriously deranged, mentally ill, homeless (African-American), and very evil man, who said according to the media, something like: “I can do it – I’m God.”

note: the enchanting ‘mosaic tile’ / New Year’s Eve themed / mural artworks in the city’s large traffic hub, the Times Square Subway Station /. . greatly beloved by people from all walks of life – for its somewhat gritty, but delightful depiction of true-life / Big Apple street culture – are by 1980’s Lower East Side artist . . JANE DICKSON.
those who know her work from the early days, including myself – are totally captivated by how her usual medium of dark velvety oil pastel – translated so well into the colored bits of tile, especially as her usual pictorial backgrounds are deeply dark, and stormy – and here in the rumbling MTA station – they come to life . . amazingly !!
even against the open white spaces of the classic white ‘subway’ tile / tunnels.
what comes to life / what goes to death ???
is there really, a definitive line / in 4 dimensional . . thought ?
Jane’s New Year’s Eve ‘celebrants’ . . . are a bit sad, tired, weary, and bleak – for all the joyful commotion / in a word: true New Yorkers.

although WOOD – is the main element associated with TIGER, it’s metaphysical ‘spine’,
according to the 60 year ‘element’ cycle – 2022 is more specifically broken down again, element-wise / to the Year of the . . WATER TIGER !!
that is WOOD – augmented by Water, as opposed to say, fire.
which means . . a much more mellow, nourishing tiger / as opposed to the fierce predatory one. the strength is still there, but it is ‘tempered’ towards providing protection, it’s a nuance. the focus is still on getting things down / but catching that prey, channels into – less emphasis on killing, and more emphasis on feeding.
water provides wood with growth / seeds to trees, flowers / and, then in turn – the fully grown, thriving, wood provides the wooden boat, that travels the water.
thinking on horoscopes, and the ‘power of a thought-pattern’ that can be derived / from a simple visual hand-drawn image / of a zodiac animal (!!) / leads one to understand – just how primal the human instinct for art, is.
it’s not just the science / it’s the . . magic.
yin yang / another great Chinese concept.
unlike Dr. HENRY LEWIS GATES / & his ‘Finding Your Roots’ /
which is fascinating, don’t get me wrong . . .
the artist in all of us knows, on some deep level: 100% of who you are – is not – just your . . DNA / unless there’s ‘bio-codes’ – in that DNA, for ‘otherworldly’.
it’s practically, or essentially ‘documented’ / that with every great scientific leap, there is a huge popular movement towards contacting the dead through spiritualist / mediums !!
it’s a dang strange universe – that’s for sure.
which brings us back to: the power of a dang good ‘creative’ / visual image !!
NIGO . . born 1970, an internationally famous Japanese fashion trend maker / bold graphic designer, and just a mighty, good all-around / pop culture icon / who is probably, if Wikipedia is your only source / widely known for founding Bape / A Bathing Ape, in the ‘creative’ world, he’s now more famous for creating – the current / hipster brand: HUMANMADE.
and, has nailed . . . the Water Tiger, just by giving it, a ‘wink’ . . . !!!!
this Water Tiger . . is not out to eat you – but, to GREET YOU !!!!

bye the way: malleable ‘clay’, and fluid ‘water’ – are not that far apart.
and, work well / to produce utilitarian vessels, (pottery) (poetry) . . . together.
& . . . SO:
EVERY BIT OF INDIGENOUS / COSMIC INFORMATION – IS LIKE A DROP OF WATER . .
TO A THIRSTY BIO / EARTH-ROOTED HUMAN BEING, LOOKING FOR . . ‘hints’ to UNDERSTANDING / and DE-CODING . . what’s in the future, and how best to cope, or be inspired by the dynamics of all those human characters – we will encounter,
and, perhaps . . even, birth !!
perhaps more than half the world !!, have found the Chinese Zodiac, is . . especially helpful / with regards to determining a MIND-SET, A PATH OUTWARD, and a PATH INWARD,
and . . so on, & so:
with regards to the incoming ‘YEAR of the WATER TIGER’ . . .
the GREAT STRENGTH TO GO FORWARD / has it’s more usual impulsive fierceness / tempered to a fluid muscular forcefulness, that is muscle, skills – tempered with some caution, fierceness tempered with fluid water motion . . which is a good thing.
think: poet / scholar / knight / explorer.
apparently, with just a personal skimming glance at the internet / while trying to get a handle on “what is a water tiger” ?!!

though ‘caution’ and ‘luck’ are also words that bubble up through the collective hive / perhaps as chorus / to the tiger’s streak of rebellion and impulsiveness.
there seems to be a lot of back & forth on that. just as water is so necessary for life, it can be a force of destruction. best to well-consider the choices, take heed.

SPRUNG FROM SEEMINGLY A SIMPLE UTILITARIAN SOURCE.
THE INCREDIBLE VISUAL ‘ATTRACTION’ . . . of LORNA’S WORK /
the re-imagined fluid shapes, the subtle play of shifting / transparent colors of glass,
the fragile versus the strength, the implied uses & volumes /
that always, always – sets my imagination soaring !!!
Spectacular . . . ???
for SURE !!!
just in the . . boldness of the thought, the array / and the craft.
in the oversize vessels themselves, marching straightforward – through the space.
unadorned & free-standing, bubbles of human breath / encased in wrought iron. sending up thought-patterns for all who witness – their silent, immobile . . march.
one-of-a kind vessels – that are shapes, and containers.
an eco-army, of the . . . future ?

Hand-blown glass in metal wire ‘Trash cans’ – to mold / all the works, which are in fact / large scale, free-standing sculptures – were completed with the help of a . . technical ‘team’.

I have never met the Montreal-based artist in person / but I’ve been fascinated, and intrigued by her work, ever since I first saw photos of it, in the small group show, ‘MAY WEST’ at the very, very Indie gallery, VICKI / in upstate Newburgh, run at that time . . by DANIEL GIORDANO & SAMUEL BOEHM.
