it’s really interesting to go to the show and see the actual sizes of the pieces above. the jpegs were pretty much posted – sized as they came in (most likely, web/formatted by the artists individually) – and, there are some real surprises.
The JAMES BRITTINGHAM piece is much larger than it appears to be, above. The MICHAEL GREATHOUSE piece is much, much smaller in reality, and the PETE PEZZIMENTI painting, is probably the largest painting in the show !!
The show is hung beautifully, and all things taken into account – one has to say: there is a definite & dynamic visual and conceptual edge to this show. The rawness of the space and its off-the-beaten track feel – only add to the almost tangible, yet mysterious and provocative visual experience.

UP-DATE: WED, JAN 16, 2008 – PIX FROM THE OPENING !!

JAMES BRITTINGHAM, ‘Take Your Medicine’, 2006, acrylic and mylar, 50 x 46 ins.
. . . . as in “poured acrylic and mylar” !!

JAMES BRITTINGHAM, ‘Closing Down’, 2007, acrylic and mylar, 72 x 58 ins.
. . . . “The absence of structural support beneath the ‘skin’ of these paintings emphasizes the necessity for material invention while charting the periphery of conventional picture making” – PRESS RELEASE

MICHAEL GREATHOUSE, ‘I think I must have one of those faces you can’t help believing’

MICHAEL GREATHOUSE with his ‘I think I must have one of those faces you can’t help believing’, 2006, painted plywood and MDF
“MICHAEL GREATHOUSE includes two of his sculpted paintings that contain an unabashed allegiance to three-dimension, narrowly before that of surface. Machine-like fragments rendered with machine-like exactness virtually obliterate any trace of the artists’s hand, which (in fact)
the sculptures are wholly generated by.” – PRESS RELEASE

MICHAEL GREATHOUSE, ‘The beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart’, 2005, painted plywood and MDF

(wow, that’s a great deal, see the price at the show – artlovers !!)

CHANGECASE CO-CURATOR YASHA WALLIN, with MICHAEL SCHUR of METHOD+CONSTRUCTION,
in front of PETE PEZZIMENTI’S LARGE PAINTING.
we missed catching a photo of PETE at the opening – he had to run off early, his band, THE RAMBLERS, (he’s the drummer), had a gig the same nite,
but – here’s:
PETE at BRIAN BELOTT’S STUDIO, and, here’s a link to pix from his: MAY 17, 2007 ‘Kings Don’t Mean A Thing’ opening, last year at MONYA ROWE.

another view of PETE PEZZIMENTI’S PAINTING AT THE CHANGECASE OPENING.
“PETE PEZZIMENTI’S ability to locate a common denominator within dichotomous artistic vantage points is demonstrated by his contribution of a coy, blocky painting on carpet which muses on high and low brows of modernism. This cobbling together of grandfather influences along with his ripe brand of folk formalism continues to generate his unique visual vernacular.” – PRESS RELEASE

on the left, PETE PEZZIMENI, ‘Untitled’, and then, JIM LEE’S white canvas “sort of free-standing” ‘Untitled (Nimbus)’, 2007, acrylic on canvas over wood with pin, and his smaller piece, JIM LEE, ‘Foam Noir’, 2007, oil on linen, carpet foam, corrugated cardboard and latex on wood, 6-3/4 x 11 x 3 ins.

at the opening, performance artist, JENNIFER SULLIVAN, with JIM LEE’S ‘Foam Noir’ behind her.

‘Myth: Bedtime Stories and Bullshit’ – OPENS TO-NITE – FRI JAN 11, 2008 – 7-10 PM
JANUARY 11 – JANUARY 29, 2008
McCAIG-WELLES GALLERY – 129 ROEBLING ST – BROOKLYN – NY
HOURS: TUES-FRI 11-7PM / SAT+SUN 12-7PM
ABOVE: CARD ILLUSTRATION/GRAPHICS BY: PATRICK CONLON
FEATURING WORK BY:
WES LANG, LANCE TURNBOW, SWEETY, KEITH LANG & PATRICK CONLON
CURATED BY LANCE TURNBOW, WHO WRITES:
“The cast of characters you see here have been friends for along time. Thrown together by the world of tattooing, three of them are tattoo artists and three of them long time canvases for them to make their mark on.
Suggested by Josh Lord, ‘Myth’, was a fitting theme for the show. With all our tattoo experience, the idea of exploding myth was a natural one. In further conversations with one another we began to really push our own ideas of what ‘myth’ really meant to each of us. The one constant in our conversations was that everyone needs it in their lives in some from or fashion. Whether it is an interest in an ancient religion, not believing in a popular thought, or completely starting one of your own, myth is always someplace in our thoughts, driving us on our paths in one way or another.
This show is a culmination of our thoughts and beliefs on this topic.”

NEIL BURKE and SAM McPHEETERS – ‘HUMAN HAIR ‘ – OPENS TO-NITE – !!
SATURDAY – JANUARY 5, 2008 – 7-10 PM
the show runs: JAN 5 – FEB 3, 2008
CINDERS GALLERY – 103 HAVEMAYER ST – BTWN HOPE + GRAND – BROOKLYN – NY
GALLERY HOURS: WED-FRI 2-8PM / SAT+SUN 12-7PM
FROM THE GALLERY PRESS RELEASE:
“The deviant artistic duo of SAM McPHEETERS and NEIL BURKE was perhaps last seen together on these shores as MEN’S RECOVERY PROJECT, a 90s era hardcore band turned weirdo tornado noise rock act whose infamous performances involving s+m masks, ladies lingerie, fat wrestlers, Patrick Henry, and a drummer playing under bed sheets indelibly scarred the imagination of the underground and challenged what could actually be done as a “band”.
Their visual artwork, which accompanied over a dozen audio releases, countless silkscreened posters, zines, and other assorted propaganda, was the perfect addendum to their musical chaos: brightly colored war torn sci-fi landscapes where fleshy suit and tie humanoids roamed aimlessly asking “Am I Normal?”. Their affecting aesthetic is akin to choking victim diagrams and crash test dummy videos – cautionary warnings of the tragedies that humans create for themselves.
Their first art show together in the NY area, this new body of work continues the tradition of pushing the envelope of good taste by channeling anger and despondency through stratling and often laugh out loud hilarious imagery that benefits from sharp as a whip wit and excellent printmaking techniques.
SAM McPHEETERS is a writer, visual and performance artist, who was the former lead singer of legendary NY hardcore band BORN AGAINST, MEN’S RECOVERY PROJECT, and most recently LA’s WRANGLER BRUTES. He currently lives and works in CALIFORNIA.
NEIL BURKE is a poster artist and graphic designer who is responsible for much of the look and feel of VERMIFORM RECORDS. He currently runs his own print shop in PHILADELPHIA called MONOROID. In addition, Burke also played music in BORN AGAINST, MEN’S RECOVERY PROJECT, DANSE ASSHOLE, SINKING BODY, and LIFE’S BLOOD.”
