THE PANORAMA PROJECT 3 – CURATED BY JORDIN ISIP & RODGER STEVENS
134 ARTISTS – ONE CONTINUOUS PIECE !!
SEPT 6 – OCT 4, 2008
JONATHAN LeVINE GALLERY – 529 West 20th St – 9th FLOOR – CHELSEA – NY
. . . stealing, (ok. borrowing !! -&- to good effect !!) – a page from RICH JACOBS – the curators invited a large number of artists to work on a 7 by 5 in. wood panel – that was sent out to each one of them – with one instruction – “each work had to include some manner of horizontal line or division, set at 1-3/4 in. from the bottom of the board” – “this common visual device will allow each of the separate pieces, when installed together side by side, to cohere into one long contiguous image – a panorama, encircling the gallery.”
The few die-hard & hyper-creative contrarians – and there were some, STO !! – could only push the envelope – 3-dimensionally !! or, in a few cases – managed to ‘break’ through the ‘ceiling’ – by extending their work past – the wooden panel’s top edge. Even though the project was conceived to be exhibited as one piece – in a site specific format – it is a one-time only event !! – the pieces are apparently for sale, individually. So, you gotta catch it – while you still – can !!
it’s well worth the effort to hustle on down there – this weekend.
P.S. a little more info from the curators !!
. . . turns out JORDIN ISIP and RICH JACOBS are great friends, going way back in the day – to the mid 90’s !! so, obviously they’ve shared a rich curatorial dialog. and, equally obvious – neither them had the very first word on ‘specified format’ group shows – a genre which must have a long & interesting history – but, anyway – both of them have been producing varied ‘specified format’ shows – since at least Feb 2002 !! way back in SAN FRANCISCO. the big difference in their curatorial styles – ? – RICH JACOBS tends to hang his shows – salon-style – while JORDIN ISIP (and ROGER STEVENS) – make a ‘contiguous/singular’ piece out of the many – as in – this panorama.
SOME PIX FROM THE PUBLIC (as opposed to the VIP) OPENING, SAT. SEPT 6, 2008

from left, works by: POLLY BECKER (with a multi-faceted & unique twist/on the format !!), an intense portrait by ROB LEECOCK, a ‘blue world’ by YONG CHOE, and ‘WOULD I?’ by CLAUDIA BRANDENBURG.
the wide range of the works, and the varied ‘take’ on the horizon line – was a pretty good reflection of the intense diversion & high level of creativity – to be found in the art scene today.

a nice contrast of styles, and meeting-up of horizon lines: HIROSHI KIMURA, left, and SAELEE OH, on the right.

from left: ALEX LUCAS, JORDIN ISIP, TAYLOR McKIMENS, and the bold graphic, at right – by GEORGIE STOUT & FENNER WEEKS.

TAYLOR McKIMENS, ‘Charley Stink Bait’, acrylic & acrylic gouache, ($800/SOLD) – that was a total STEAL !!
bet someone from the ‘inside’ – bought it.

CHARLIE BECKER, ‘CA Dreamn’, polymer clay, false teeth & doll eyes, ($300)

KIERSTEN ESSENPREIS, ‘Dipped in Jimmies’, flashe with resin, ($550)
a very good price for this rising star’s work..

JOHN FREEBORN, ‘Untitled (Red Joystick & Green Scorpions)’, cross stitch ($250) – a steal !!

GEOFF ROCKWELL, ‘Knitting’, acrylic & watercolor, ($800)

CLAYTON BROTHERS, ‘Wait for the Blackout’, mixed media, ($1,500)

‘HOT SHIT’ by KEIRA ALEXANDER, tape & mailbox letters, ($49.99) !!

STO !! ‘Landed’, paint & papier mache, ($400) – another steal !!

RICH JACOBS, ‘Try to Slow Down if You Can’, paint marker & ballpoint pen, ($300)

JAMES BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, ‘The Pool’, acrylic, ($500)

ERIK FOSS, ‘Just Because’, mixed media, ($800)

ERIK WHITE, ‘He said’, ballpoint pen’, ($1,200)
. . . the more I see of this guy’s work – the more I like it.

EVAH FAN, ‘Ping Pong Buff’, gouache, ($550) – another steal !!

visiting from Japan – from left: SATORU OHNO, VIVIANE KO, ALAN LEE and FANTASISTA UTAMARO.
. . . turns out – SATORU OHNO and FANTASISTA are both, very interesting, very dynamic – graphic design/comics format and multi-media artists. SATORU OHNO specializes in animation and FANTASISTA’S focus is on comic book format & magazines.

MATT LEINES, ‘A City, Perhaps Not Unlike Mingo City’, acrylic on paper mounted on board, ($2,000)
this is one stubborn guy. kind of just like his hyper-graphic work !!

KELIE BOWMAN, ‘Depth Marker’, watercolor on paper on board, ($150) – a true steal !!
– if I ever did see one !!

SAELEE OH, ‘Arise’, acrylic & graphite, ($500)/SOLD

JEFF QUINN, ‘Book’, paint & plaster, ($450) – I’d buy that in a nano-second.
. . maybe, taking a page from KARA WALKER’s book – but definitely making his own
100% home run !!
(. . come on – paper cut-outs are a long time folk art tradition & a particularly, American – genre !!)
give it up – for this guy – its a great piece.

a very nice – as in – super subtle, but definitely ACE !! – piece by one of the curators – JORDIN ISIP ,
‘Accumulations’, mixed media, ($350) most probably – a steal !!, too.
(nice take on the horizon line requirement, too.)

WILLIAM BUZZELL, ‘Visionary Superstructures’, acrylic house paint, ($300) – a steal !!

GREGORY BENTON, ‘It’s natural to be Afraid’, enamel & acrylic on glass on board, ($250)

CHAD DZIEWIOR, ‘Deluxe’ , metal on metal, ($666)

CHAD DZIEWIOR

one of the show’s 2 curators, as well as a participating artist – JORDIN ISIP.

KEVIN HOOYMAN – ‘DARK WALK ‘
SEPT 13 – OCT 18, 2008
PROOF GALLERY – located at The Distillery – 516 E. 2nd St. – SOUTH BOSTON, MASS.
from the press release:
“Proof Gallery is thrilled to present the Boston solo debut of BROOKLYN-based KEVIN HOOYMAN.
The exhibition, ‘Dark Walk’ is inspired by the artist’s memories of youthful late night “sensory deprivation” walks in the wilderness with friends. During these walks the “real” world slips into an imagined world, merging memory and invention. In ‘Dark Walk’, emissaries from this altered state beckon with promises of mystical communication. Lusciously elaborate flora and fauna are captured from Hooyman’s everyday surroundings but the fantastical creeps into the actual. As audience, our observation morphs into participation. The drawings both enact and document the seductive experience of this fertile world between worlds.” RIGHT ON !!
we first met up with KEVIN HOOYMAN – at CINDERS !!

. . . artlovers weighs in – on another NEW YORK TIMES ART REVIEW – of the same FRIDAY – SEPTEMBER 26, 2008.
. . . that on RITA ACKERMANN by KAREN ROSENBERG.
” . . . The works in Rita Ackermann’s ‘Don’t Give Me Salad (Nurses)’ chew up and spit out the pulp fiction female stereotypes embodied in Richard Prince’s much-hyped ‘Nurse’ paintings. (Ms. Ackermann makes no overt references to Mr. Prince’s pictures, but the comparison is inevitable).”
well, not so sure that – the comparison is – “inevitable” – to Mr. Prince’s oeuvre – but, if you put a ‘joke’ tagline – under the show’s cartoon-y card image – well, voila – a Richard Prince – ‘Joke’ painting !!! most of them, way better than his ‘Nurse’ paintings – anyway !!

. . . “oh oh, the economy is tanking – bring on the nurses !!”

‘Don’t Give Me Salad (Nurses)’
ANDREA ROSEN GALLERY, CHELSEA, NYC, FRI SEPT 12, 2008
PHOTO: NANCY SMITH
CECILY has a big one-person show up at GAGOSIAN/24th ST.
It runs SEPT 20-OCT 25, 2008
see: GAGOSIAN GALLERY/NYC
NICOLAI just published three major architecture reviews in the NEW YORK TIMES, probably the most important of which was the first, on the new RENZO PIANO – CALIFORNIA ACADEMY OF SCIENCES,
SAN FRANCISO !! (Golden Gate Park !!)
The article, titled: ‘A Building That Blooms and Grows, Balancing Nature and Civilization’ – was published, with an amazing 1/2 page color photo – in the NEW YORK TIMES – WED. SEPT 24, 2008, in the ARTS SECTION/ARCHITECTURE REVIEW. the article – headlined the section’s front page. Mr. Ouroussoff manages to write in a style that is at once entrancing and informative – so much so, as to make his essays on architecture – transformative !!
you can read the article online, here: NEW TIMES ARCHIVE/RENZO PIANO REVIEW
do not miss the photos !! – there’s a small slide show of 10 photos of the building, linked to the article – it’s a – great – slide show.
if you missed the prompt in the article – here’s a direct link to the slideshow photos:
see: NEW YORK TIMES/RENZO PIANO/CALIFORNIA ACADEMY OF SCIENCES/SLIDE SHOW

. . . this is how the article appeared in the paper . . .
and, here’s 2 photos from that slide show:

PHOTO: TIM GRIFFITH/COURTESY: NEW YORK TIMES ONLINE
(ok ok – I know its the same shot – just can’t let go of it, its so spec-tac-u-lar, esp. in digital hi-def.)

PHOTO: TIM GRIFFITH/COURTESY: NEW YORK TIMES ONLINE
. . . “If you want re-affirmation that human history is an upward spiral rather than a descent into darkness, head to the new California Academy of Sciences”.
– NICOLAI OUROUSSOFF
. . . then on FRIDAY, SEPT 26th, this season’s IT COUPLE, took a big hit. put briefly, in the very same NEW YORK TIMES – WEEKEND ARTS SECTION, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2008 – CECILY’S ‘GO-GO’ SHOW, WAS DEALT A CRUEL & PERHAPS FATAL, (that bad !!) BLOW, COURTESY Of MARTHA SCHWENDENER.
. . . WHILST, NICOLAI’S SECOND BRILLIANT ARTICLE of the week – ON THE NEW RE-DESIGN of THE MUSEUM OF ARTS & DESIGN – WAS PUBLISHED IN ALL ITS PICTORIAL & TEXTUAL GLORY – ALL OVER THE VERY SAME SECTION’S – COVER FRONT PAGE, AGAIN !! whoa, that’s mean !!!
. . . that’s why, we call this KILLER town – NEW YORK F*CKING CITY !!!
MARTHA SCHWENDENER, known mostly for her (usually annoying) negative soundbites, wrote, or better put, was allowed by the Times to write – her best review ever – the one she was destined for – just by finally writing what everybody else – had already thought. (SEPT VOGUE – notwithstanding – and, don’t you look the artworld, fool – again !!). The pivotal dart: “It’s difficult not to notice, when standing in front of Ms. Brown’s paintings, that she is merely a competent painter rather than a great one.”
And, in one paragraph, goes on further to decimate the DORE ASHTON penned catalog for the show – calling it a “doorstopper” – meaning a huge massive book – not good enough to sit on top of your coffee table, or to be read – best, and only use – propping doors – open !!
to sum it up: the ‘know-it-all’ artlovers field correspondent, who wishes to remain anonymous, so he can still go to after-parties in this town – threw down the paper and crowed, those fearful words: ” . . . she’ll never recover from that !!”
FILE UNDER: TRUTH IS STRANGER THAN FICTION: the very first line of Nicolai’s article in that fateful section: “It was fun while it lasted.”
Its one thing to marry an artstar when she is on the way up – its quite another, to catch her on the way down.
. . . speaking of which:, YO !! PAUL H-O – co-director of ‘Guest of Cindy Sherman’ – wonder what YOU make of this novel twist on the ‘I married/dated an art star scenario’ !! and, NICOLAI . . . is even on the DOCUMENTARY side of the equation, too. wow. what a turnaround.
FINALLY:
and, if you are wondering how CECILY BROWN got so far in the first place – here’s a few clues for the clueless, put briefly. Well, besides riding in on her very famous daddy’s coattails, and he was/is the most famous ART CRITIC in BRITAIN – ANTHONY DAVID BERNARD SYLVESTER (!!??) – when she first hit these NYC shores, she partied very hard & wild – up to and including drugged-up BF’s who jumped from windows – to including a penchant, esp. on occasions when the ‘media’ – would be there – for sheer, 100% transparent designer blouses, sans underwear de toute. don’t believe me ? just ask CHARLIE FINCH, WALTER ROBINSON or ANTHONY HADEN-GUEST !! Anthony got so aroused at one downtown dinner party – he had to be restrained from trying to tear – it off her.
read more about CECILY’S old man, here: ANTHONY DAVID BERNARD SYLVESTER
UP-DATE: FRIDAY SEPT 26 2008
a source who wishes to remain anonymous – says that: “Charlie Finch has a shot of CB in the see-thru blouse.
I have it somewhere in my drives”.

MICHAEL YOUNG (Canada)
MAD VICKY’S TEA GALLERY – is proud to present – ‘This Place is Foreign’ – a group exhibition of artists based in BERLIN, but from elsewhere. Working with music, video, sculpture, textiles, drawings, photography, and painting, these artists met serendipitously in Berlin and have found ways to use the city as a background for collaboration – artistic and recreational – in studios, galleries, bars, and discotheques. A performance by HANAYO – on OCT 1st – at 19:00 – accompanies the show.
the MAD VICKY’S press release goes on to state:
“The condition of international artists in Berlin is more science-fiction than political drama: The works exhibited in the show recall psychedelic, perverse, mysterious, and happy visits to unexplored regions rather than hankerings for national identities or exotic fetishes. Selecting a context for the works of art becomes situational, playful, and participatory, perhaps like their creation.
Through the artists’ uses of various media, the show looks at the moment when distinctions collapse between work and play, personal and collective, the familiar and the foreign.”

CHECK OUT: MAD VICKY’S TEA GALLERY !!

CHECK OUT: the super surreal & a-m-a-z-i-n-g !! photo based website of: HANAYO !! &

‘OUTSIDERS NY’ – 282 BOWERY – just off HOUSTON
the BRIT-based LAZARIDES GALLERY – STREET ART – NYC POP-UP SHOW
2 WEEKS ONLY !! SEPT 26 – OCT 12, 2008 !!
HRS: OPEN DAILY 11am – 7pm
first off, the gallery isn’t based in London, per se – it’s in NEWCASTLE. second, not all the artists are Brits either, BAST seems to be based in BROOKLYN, JR is from France, and CONOR HARRINGTON hails from CORK, IRELAND. MARK JENKINS is a native of WASHINGTON, DC and TODD JAMES aka REAS is a BROOKLYN native who lives and works in NYC.
one of the best aspects of the installation is its lighting quick rough and ready, get in there & get out – conversion of a BOWERY trademark – RESTAURANT/KITCHEN/CHAIR SUPPLY STORE – to a guerilla exhibition space – that harks back – to the good ole days – of the wild ROGUE pop-up shows of the 80’s, before the term ‘POP-up’ existed !! They did a damn good job – of leaving the space really raw and yet: functioning as a great showcase for their brand of art. The Lazarides take on street art seems to be heavily leaning on the dark side – and the genre’s statesmen; nothing wrong with that, just an observation, (and there are several contradictions to this statement in the show, i.e. the pop graphics of TODD JAMES & the youthful visions of CONOR HARRINGTON !!) as opposed to, say the current, and slightly more ahead-of-the-curve = pop graphic street art show show: ‘4 GEEZERS: LONDON POLICE, FLYING FORTRESS, PEZ & EINE’ – curated by ANDREW MICHAEL FORD at BROOKLYN’S own AD HOC GALLERY.
‘4 GEEZERS: LONDON POLICE, FLYING FORTRESS, PEZ & EINE’ – SEPT 12-OCT 12, 2008

. . . that being said – the opening was a blast – !! – fueled by an open BELVEDERE bar. ‘OUTSIDERS NY’ – is a very very interesting and large survey show, with a wide range – the work was great !! – and looked fantastic – in the hit and run environment.
