~JASON GRUNWALD CLOSING PARTY – TO-NITE !!

Jason Grunwald closing party

JASON GRUNWALD & EASTERN DISTRICT – are throwing a big closing bash for his dyno-mite show – to-nite – THURS APRIL 29 – from 7-11 PM – !! featuring a s-l-i-c-k . . . “sick lineup of bands including the Brooklyn noise duo Sisters, underground Iranian rockers The Yellow Dogs, and the electro-garage rock band Electric People !!!”
FREE SHOW + FREE DRINKS

the actual show – JASON GRUNWALD: ‘Was It All A Dream’ actually runs thru this SUN MAY 2, 2010.
the show is a multi-medium mini-retrospective for this artist – who is mostly known for his illustrative music world posters, for bands such as the COACH WHIPS, SONIC YOUTH & DEVENDRA BANHART. There are large oil paintings on canvas – esp one that seems to be a complicated and detailed rendition of his studio at home – full of the art – now seen on the walls, here !! also included are some charcoal and pencil drawings and studies as well as some free-standing sculptural assemblages. personally I like his 2-D stuff, best. both the paintings and drawings, as well as the more formal band posters.
you can see a nice, brief range of his artwork here – on his website.

there was a huge array of (diverse) work in the relatively small space – it almost had an ‘outsider’ feel.

grunwald # 3
a poster for DEVENDRA BANHART & his sidekicks – HAIRY FAIRY.

grunwald # 4
it was like a collage, but of real art, not as in: found images – and had a nice rough-style, ‘let’s rumble’ edge.

grunwald # 5
the calligraphy was cool, too.
“in the future no one will be famous”.

grunwald # 6
LOL for sure. POSTER BOY kept his niche on the wall !!
and, what about BROOKLYN POSTER BOY – will he be – famous ?
got great great super great pix of that immediately previous show – but artlovers had just admin PHP busted – aka blown apart – so when the site gets back to 100% – will be sure to post them . . . pronto.
including lyrical assemblage tag work by NohJColey, photos of green shaped trees by LUCAS McGOWEN, that I totally loved, some terrific large scale photo wall murals by JIM KIERNAN, a big painting by JUAN DOE and this small green mo-hawked portrait – painted right on the wall by a certain BROOKLYN POSTER BOY – who it seems, can also – paint !! as well as he can cut, tear & re-arrange !! with new message, and usually pretty scary, too. dude.

~RABBIT TAUGHT EAGLE !!

Rabit eagle

FILE UNDER: RABBIT TAUGHT EAGLE – WENT FOR PARE, AND ALSO CAUGHT – WOLFY !!

. . . when you are out and about on the LOWER EAST SIDE on SATURDAY or even SUNDAY !! – you can catch a SECRET GOLDEN FLOWER !! of a show at the new PARTICIPANT location – also on East HOUSTON, 253 EAST HOUSTON, just east of Essex.
HRS: WED-SUN/noon-7 PM

‘That’s When the Rabbit Taught the Eagle a Lesson With a Smith & Wesson’
an installation based on a new limited edition artist book – curated and installed by JASPER SEBASTIAN STURUP.
the book features the work of 5 artists – each of whom got 25 pages:
MIKE PARE – BARRY McGEE – JASPER SEBASTIAN STURUP – KRISTOFER HULTENBERG – D-L ALVAREZ
the show runs thru MAY 2, 2010.

gold # 1
wow. they put some kind of large-scale gold foil paper – over what looks to be raw brick walls !!

gold # 2
the installation reminded me of the ROBERT CRUMB show in that all the pages of the book – were on display – in a beautiful room !! – but here – they were all arrayed in the display case – tables – and the gold foil reflected off the glass surface most magically – while enwrapping the whole room – in a soft warm coppery glow.
between the beautiful array of artist pages, the book format itself, and the golden wall – it was like the Golden Secret Flower had come to life and re-incarnated in newly trantic – NYC !!

gold # 2
or else – it was like being in one hell – of a big gold foil origami flower !!
this is JASPER SEBASTIAN STURUP – the artist behind the book and the installation.
he is also one the 5 artists whose work is ‘sampled’ – in the book.

gold # 3
it was – MIKE PARE who invited me to the opening. He came in from NEW MEXICO – where he and MELISSA SCHERRER, have recently re-located from Brooklyn. I am mad crazy for his work – and this opening reminded me of a Studio Visit – I did with him last year – when he was in a residency on Long Island.
I promise – I swear on my life – if my site ever gets back up and running – that will be the next – STUDIO VISIT – to go live !!

mural # 5
remember these decks – from Mike Pare’s show a few years back at BILL BRADY’S ATM ? they were so ahead of their time – they flew right over some people’s ‘critical’ heads !! but they land just right again, like a cat – in a newly Tantric NYC !! well. they always landed just right for me.

gold # 6
like-wise for all his charcoal, or is that pencil drawings !! it might be graphite. the nudes as well as the …

gold # 7
as the Navajo blanket inspired drawings – speak many tongues. so much so, they are almost golden secret mandalas – themselves, if you wanna push it, and I do.

mural # 8
this is, I guess Mike’s portrait of Melissa Scherrer. Mike told me they have also had their first child, a little girl named Maeve Winona !! ” . . . she was born October 16, 2009 in Albuquerque. She’s a total Libra an loves pedal steel guitar music and the Beatles White Album. She’s a new New Mexican.” !! an artist as well, Mellisa Scherrer has a certain rep in NYC among many – as – the Tarot card reader supreme.

WOLFY and friend – musician ANDREW DEUTSCH – actually this is where I met Wolfy and he told me about his EUCHARIST ZOMBIE SCREENING !! this upcoming Sunday in Brooklyn – at MONSTER ISLAND in Williamsburg.

~ OH OH – SAD NEWS FLASH !! DAN ASHER ABOUT – TO GET HIS WINGS.

UP-DATE: DAN ASHER left this planet – hopefully for further adventures – this past Sat April April 24, 2010 – in the very early morning hrs. bye Dan – will definitely miss you.

SIMON CERIGO reports that artist and photographer DAN ASHER is on his death bed. CHRIS from OTHER MUSIC told him. apparently Dan was alive last night – just barely and heavily medicated. Chris went to visit him in the hospital – last night – but nobody’s sure about to-night. It’s just down to days. maybe hours. Simon says: he might be dead by tomorrow. Dan is finally losing a long slow battle with lymphatic cancer – which he had had for many years, but which just sped up and snowballed on him recently. He was a real live wire, but no more. His body is still just just hanging in there . . . just long enough it seems for friends to go say good bye.
though as of Thursday afternoon, April 22, it is said that he is no longer lucid.

GAVIN BROWN gave DAN a special 2 week fund-raiser exhibit of his 1970’s BOB MARLEY photos – just last month.

see: DAN ASHER/SIBERIA PHOTO ESSAY/HEYOKA !!

DAN is also known for his small squiggly minimalist pencil line drawings, his pre-sentient late 90’s photos of icebergs in the Antarctic, his photo portraits of extreme wrestling in rural America, and his ‘quirky’ character.

p.s. don’t take my ‘flipness’ to mean – I’m not sad. I am. I’ve known Dan since I first arrived in New York in 1982. I even worked as an assistant to him – for a couple of years – when he went to & returned from the Antarctic with many many rolls of pix. He was hardwired very tight and was difficult to deal with. short temper. big chip on his shoulder. but very very talented and deserved way more success then he ever got. I’ve always been a huge supporter of his work – and I was really happy to hear Gavin had given him a show last month. they had crossed paths before, but Dan was very high maintenance. contrarian and temperamental. very self-absorbed, as they say. in a way he had to be, like we all do – to survive as full time artists, in this hard-edged town. but it was particularly hard for him tame his passions and relentless energy – but look what great quests he set himself out upon. Gavin put on a wonderful show for Dan at Passerby, a few years back. I covered it on artlovers – but alas the archives are (temporarily) broke. my only feeling now, is that he will find some rest in the next world, and if there is reincarnation – you can bet he is coming back . . . (!!?) I know he knew the value of his work – it’s the rest of you guys – that caused him such great frustration. what a tantric month – this is turning out to be. esp for NYC.

Dan at OTHER MUSIC
DAN ASHER came by my show at OTHER MUSIC last year – just about this time !! he brought me the most beautiful flowers – just a few – but very exotic ones. that’s KANA TOGASHI, my daughter Kate’s friend on the right. I think Kate took the photo. Dan and I had grown distant over the recent months – well, it’s a tough game, NYC. life is fragile. friendship is fragile. even websites are fragile. Dan leaves behind a wonderful legacy – a beautiful poetic spiritual body of work – bottomline: that’s something to celebrate, in my opinion.

~SECRET WEEKEND/WLIP/EXPL SKY & EASTERN DISTRICT/FRI APRIL 14th !!

I did catch: JOSH HARRIS/THE ENGER BROS/JASON GRUNWALD/and/THE VIENNAGRAM last weekend – as the lights went down on artlovers’ PHP.

Josh ENGER BROS 2010
JOSH HARRIS . . . back in town, looking for the GPS on the LITTLE ITALY POKER GAMES.
GOMPERTZ is in THAILAND.

Galinsky
this is GALINSKY – one of the early pioneers at PSEUDO – he ran the talk show.
GALINSKY also had a brief re-surgence of fame – he was the guy behind the CRAZY FAN ATTACKS/that rocked YouTube – when WE LIVE IN PUBLIC – had its NYC MOMA PREMIER last April 2009.
he says Josh was in on the joke – but not Ondi. I’m not so sure just how much Josh was in on that – joke, either !!
judge for yourself.

Enger Bros # 3
DAVID LESLIE and MARK ENGER.
DAVID LESLIE – also an early PSEUDO employee – he ran the the big parties – mostly he oversaw the production side of things. It was David Leslie who first hired me to work on the production crew at QUIET. I was already working for Josh !! consulting on his quilt collecting – but his empire was so big – I didn’t even know this was one of his party sites – I just happened to walk by and went in looking for some extra work – I started off painting the wall trim. the rest is history. DAVID LESLIE went on to run the infamous FIGHT CLUB/CELEBRITY ARTIST BOXING MATCHES – that sprung up from the ashes of QUIET.

Josh ENGER BROS 2010
MATT & MARK – THE ENGER BROS aka EXPLODING SKY WORLDWIDE.
MARK put the silk screen ‘TARGET’ insignias on the QUIET uniforms. MATT & MARK later taught Josh how to shoot up on the farm. This is the opening reception of their new work at MINDY WYATT GALLERY, 814 Broadway, 2nd FL.
the show runs thru MAY 7, 2010.

ENGER JACKETS
they are selling a limited selection of their custom silk screened one-of-a kind work jackets.
some of which you might want to think twice about wearing on the streets of NYC – esp if you are going to be drunk or stoned. or even in a MacDonalds !! some dumb ass – is sure to pick a fight with ya.
MARK ENGER – DID THE ALL SILKSCREEN DRAWINGS & PRODUCED ALL THE JACKETS – including THE LOGOS.

Enger jacket detail
DAVID SALLE seems to be having a cultural come back !! after kind of being mothballed. RIGHT ON !!

jacket - warhol
which is no slight on the ENGER BROS – they know what they do. run the most unrecognized silk screen shop – since ANDY WARHOL hogged all the action. the jackets are going for $100 a pop. the best pop for your art $$ out there right now. no doubt about it.

jacket LUVVY
that’s the LUVVY insignia – on the right – anybody who caught Josh on any fraction of his global media tour for WE LIVE IN PUBLIC – recognizes this one !!

Jacket back
though, you might want to think twice bout truckin’ around in this particular one !!
Josh’s original one had a blank/politically correct back. I think.

porn in comics books is (pretty much) ok.

~DASH SHAW/FRANK SANTORO/BOOKSIGNING

TALK ABOUT A BUZZ KILL, DUDE !!

artlovers is in a huge tech melt-down.
the site was taken over by aliens. just joking.
the site was taken on a server up-grade and did not make the leap.
short story – only the WORDPRESS section sort-of works – and only in this limited format. the BOMB is almost bombproof – but the home page is frozen.
all the custom photo pages are busted – cannot up-date. even here on the BOMB, the left-hand side ARCHIVES – are gone. no comment. bummer.
movie and music reviews – in a complete state of wipe-out.

so heads up – all you hard-core artlovers junkies – artlovers is in SECRET MODE, now !!
with the HOME PAGE busted – will try to work on this page.

TO-NITE – TUES APRIL 20, 2010 – 7 PM: FRANK SANTORO AND DASH SHAW at McNALLY JACKSON BOOKS – 52 PRINCE ST bet LAFAYETTE & MULBERRY. NOHO.

so first, hit the ‘APRIL 20’ link – and read the smart in-house review of DASH SHAW’S – ‘BodyWorld’ – on the McNALLY JACKSON site !!

POSTED BY NANCY SMITH – TUES APRIL 20, 2010 – 2 PM
apart from the obvious visual richness and originality of the book – this reviewer makes nice mention of Dash’s . . . “love for mystery. There were many codes, or strange elements in ‘Bottomless BellyButton’ (this reviewer’s ‘favorite graphic novel of 2008’), that went little-remarked-upon and never solved . . . all of this strangeness and panting humanity comes to light in ‘BodyWorld'” . . .

‘Bodyworld’ – originally began as comic series on Dash Shaw’s own website.

body world
check out: DASH SHAW – ‘BodyWorld’ !!

Conversing with DASH – will be FRANK SANTORO – fellow cartoonist and downtown fave – the artist behind the “revered” ‘Storeyville’ and a “gorgeous new” series – ‘Cold Heat’.

~DASH SHAW/CHIP KIDD/STRAND BOOKSIGNING !!

Dash Strand # 1
DASH SHAW, left, was introduced and interviewed briefly – by CHIP KIDD, the graphic design artist – who is also the editor-in-chief of PANTHEON BOOKS – which just published Mr. Shaw’s new hard cover book – ‘BodyWorld’.
the book signing took place at the STRAND BOOKSTORE – last night, Tuesday, April 14, 2010.
see: RANDOM HOUSE/PANTHEON/DASH SHAW – ‘BodyWorld’

Dash # 3
Dash spoke entertainingly of his early experiences, in and out of school – but esp about being in school briefly in Japan, and working as a nude model for university art school drawing classes in Richmond, Virginia – to his more recent comings and goings through the SVA program here in NYC. On the technical side of things – he touched on how he generates his work, his stories have close connections to his real life world, and how he works, for immediacy, feedback and animation on the web – to his strongly expressed feeling that: hard copy books – will only become more and more beautiful – unique objects – to handle and behold – as opposed to becoming irrelevant & phased-out.

dash shaw book
case at hand: his book !! – ‘BodyWorld’ is actually – top bound . . . like some sketch books,

dash # 1
– so it opens up – and works pretty much – as a kind of vertical hard cover flip book.

dash # 2
for a comic or graphic novel – it includes a large degree of art world visual ‘content’ cross-over – and, in fact – apart from naming GARY PANTER and DAVID MAZZUCCHELLI as two of his biggest comic world influences – he also made a strong point of referencing painter DAVID SALLE – whose image layering, and wide graphic nuancing, as well as abstract fields – can be easily picked out – esp once mentioned.

Dash # 3
the graphics per se, text fonts and lay-out – were very high-tech, futuristic and – pretty much – far out.

dash # 4
the color palette was also very striking – from the reflective chrome-like detailing on the cover, the bright ‘label’ orange digital lettering on the page sides – to the actual story board narrations.

dash # 5
the drawing of the characters, and the page compositions – easily straddled both the comic, and the art worlds.

dash # 6
he spoke about ‘evolving’ comic style – as in, how he had come to appreciate most – those contemporary comic book artists who have ‘evolving’ graphic style. there was a funny, brief exchange between himself and moderator Chip Kidd – when pressed to elaborate a little further . . . Mr. Kidd seemed at first stunned, when Dash Shaw pulled GARY PANTER’S name seemingly out of the air in this context. but as everyone took 2 mins to internalize and contemplate the issue – you could almost see the mental light bulbs going off – across the room – as in, exactly so. get it.

dash # 7
art meets illustration . . .

dash # 8
of course CHIP KIDD himself, is a truly ‘seminal’ figure in the worlds of graphic design and comic book culture – or as they often call ’em now = graphic novels, and two of his books were on hand as well.
CHIP KIDD, ‘The Learners’ – ‘THE BOOK AFTER THE CHEESE MONKEYS’.

dash # 9
CHIP KIDD, ‘The CHEESE MONKEYS’ – ‘A NOVEL IN TWO SEMESTERS’.

Dash # 11
after the introductory – Dash moved on to project, narrate, and explain some of the background – behind a chapter of the book.

Dash # 12dash # 13
like he said: his school experience in Japan – and his time in Richmond – as a drawing class nude model – seemed to have laid the seeds for much of the action !!

dash # 15
then, in what became immediately apparent – as a huge one-time treat – he projected a brief animated project.

dash shaw # 15
it was made very simply – just some colored sharpies on plain white 8 x 10 copy paper . . .

dash shaw # 16
that started off pretty simple and then went – far out !!

dsah shaw # 17
the animation – was the simplest you can generate by computer, just basically numbering the pages – essentially to screen – in a rapid order. that’s how they moved – they were ‘animated’ – in the truest sense of the word – by the visual logic of the sharpie drawing.

dash shaw # 18

dsah shaw # 19

Dash Shaw # 20

dash shaw # 21

dash shaw cutting
DAVID MAZZUCCHELLI’S ‘HAIR NUDE’. ha ha came to mind !!
but whereas DAVID MAZZUCCELLI is so dark and twisted. socially and emotionally powerful. even scarring. think the Joker – DASH SHAW’S work is more compelling in a future shock highly mentally projected far out – alternative story-telling universe – new world kind of way.

Dash Shaw # 24
still part of the brief, but b-r-i-l-l-i-a-n-t !! kind of thrilling really – animation – DASH SHAW: ‘The Unclothed Man in the 35th Century A.D.’ The story seems to bounce off his nude drawing model days and goes off into deep end contemplation of humans losing their individuality as they evolve into entities that “intoxicate” each others thoughts with a rampant dominant form of social telepathy !!

dash shaw # 25
truly, for me – the drawing line – was just as fascinating as the story line . . .

dash shaw # 26
after the projection – Dash Shaw was animated himself !! he had scored with the small but very happy audience. everyone there knew – you had caught a very special moment.

Dash Shaw # 27
CHIP KIDD was wonderfully laid back, too. just watching the roll and flow. of his not easily defined young author/artist.

dash signs # 1
and then, let the book signing – begin !!

he had brought along – a nice array of colored markers.
