ALFREDO MARTINEZ – HUNGER STRIKE – PRISON DRAWING ca. 2002.
Our very first offering:
the last 2 – MARK ENGER/EXPLODING SKY WORLDIDE – ALFREDO MARTINEZ HUNGER STRIKE T-SHIRTS.
artlovers/NANCY SMITH commissioned MARK ENGER to custom silk-screen this limited edition T-Shirt in 2003.
only 12 were individually hand-printed – and each is hand-numbered on the back.
plus one A.P. – which JOSH HARRIS owns.
The image is a drawing ALFREDO MARTINEZ sent me – via mail – while he was incarcerated in prison – for his notorious BASQUIAT FORGERY CAPER . . . .
one of his earliest ‘prison drawings’ – it is a self-portrait of himself – tied down and being being force-fed – while he was on hunger strike . . . needless to say – his first month in prison didn’t go too well – for either him or the warden !!
talk about a head-on battle of the wills.
Alfredo claims he stopped eating mostly because they wouldn’t let him do his art.
I think it would be safe to add: and because he has ‘authority issues’ . . . which were heightened by the maximum security he was held under – due to his uncanny ability to make weapons – out of anything . . .
plus for same reason – he was deemed too much of a threat to be released into the general prison population . . . so he had some pretty hardcore company. mostly mafia types. crooks. swindlers.
let’s not even get into the new friends he made during his 2-yr. stay . . . suffice to say, when he came out – that was his worst period.
yeah, its true – what they say: you come out much worse than when you went in – and leave it at that.
anyway – it took a while for the prison authorities to figure him out. (no say.)
his hunger strike lasted for something like 33 days and ended when they let him make art, but ONLY drawings !! on hand-made paper – he created from flour and water out of scrap jail paper. a skill which he claims a fellow inmate, a Russian forger taught him. he drew the images with food dyes – which he patiently concocted from common kitchen food produce, like Jell-o, and instant food packets, as in ketchup, tea, and coffee – mixed with water. “millions” of instant coffee packets to make an eye-dropper of color !!
and they put him to work – in the prison kitchen !!
if that won’t end a hunger strike – what will ?

KATHLEEN MASSARA – relates in a post that just went up – MARCH 30, 2011 – in L MAGAZINE – that some smart ass bodies (!!)
absconded with Gavin’s car – that he had apparently left unattended with the keys in the ignition – an entirely plausible scenario given that the space was once a garage or loading dock and the gallery interior has been hollowed out. or left empty. or mde empty – again. stripped. de-constructed is the polite word. and with no security, or guns, just sayin – in sight !!
(hey, is that ‘golden’ beer crate nailed down – that’s what I want to know !!)
according to Ms. Massara’s retelling – of the dirty deed:
‘Chez Tiravanija, the onus is on the viewer to make the experience worthwhile. The relational artist’s job is to bring people together in a space with as few boundaries as possible. Last week, appropriately, artists PATRICIA SILVA and ERIC ANDERSON took matters into their own hands when they saw that a car was parked inside the wide-open gallery with keys in the ignition.
Taking this as a sign that they were free to take it for a spin, the pair drove around for less than a half hour, then returned to the gallery. Gavin Brown was outside, fuming, thinking his car had been stolen. He later told SALTZ*, “I suppose in some sense I set up the situation. So I’ve got nothing to complain about.” ‘
apparently trying to regain his cool – he then reached for some famous last words – not !! – as further related by Massara:
“But if someone really wanted to do something like this, they should have taken the car for a week, or driven it off the pier.”
yo dude – that for sure would NOT have been funny, but as done – yes. the deed was funny. dirty, but not that dirty, dude.
and a smart move – art wise, indeedy doody do.
all I can say is: seeing GAVIN BROWN fume ? – priceless !!

it’s art – and art is a many-sided thing to behold – especially when it is – BRILLIANT !!

though he is usually right on about the flat stuff, i.e. paintings – he never seems to be able to make the leap of faith – its called imagination, dude – needed for the free-wheeling stuff . . he didn’t get that great MICHEL GONDRY installation – ‘PLEASE RE-WIND’ – a few years back at DEITCH PROJECTS, either.

MATT ENGER, Mark’s twin bro – was holding up – though often you could sense, understandably – how overpowered by grief and loss he was at times – in brief flickers. Matt said he and Mark was born “in the old hospital in Fort Sill, Oklahoma – where Geronimo – died”. for real.

in his eulogy, Rick Rodine related how even their mom had to tie a red string around one of them – in their early years – so she could tell them apart.
in later life they kept some distance stylistically – but many present remarked how Matt has let his Mark side shine.

Mark taught Theo how to shoot a rifle – when he was something like 10 yrs old. Kate would be the first to tell you – her visit to Mark’s studio last April 2010 – was a highlite of her life – and what an amazing artist she thought Mark to be.

JOSH and Mark had a long and colorful history together – they collaborated on many projects, and Mark lived up on the farm.

I’m thinking maybe – just maybe – RIRKRIT TIRAVANIJA throws the occasional glance or two – at artlovers – and was moved to include – a silkscreen-artist-at-work installation at – ‘FEAR EATS THE SOUL’ – by our recent coverage of the worldly departing of our dear friend and silkscreen artist – supremo – MARK ENGER – who called his studio . . . which he ran with his identical twin brother MATT . . . EXPLODING SKY WORLDWIDE . . . and which Matt continues to run.
MARK ENGER – in his studio just about one year ago – a true American hero.
an amazing super talented artist who silkscreened on canvas – as well as on pretty much everything else.
T-shirts included. He died sadly this past January 2011, not quite 48 yrs old. after a long and brave battle with throat cancer.
yeah. smokin’ too many of those damn ciggies – brought this sweet cowboy down.

in fact, I first met him at PSEUDO – where he was silk screen artist-in-residence for JOSH HARRIS. he silkscreened our in-house crew work shirts at QUIET – and he plays a cameo role in WE LIVE IN PUBLIC – yep, he is the drunken cowboy. who couldn’t get back in the party.
yeah. his imagery got a little more aggressive – in the face of death. I guess that will do it to, ya.
talk about walking around – and maybe having your silkscreened message – provoke an attack.

but he also addressed the American past . . .

WHEN THE CHIPS ARE DOWN & RESOURCES ARE SCARCE – THE T-SHIRT – IS A GOOD USE OF MATERIAL – JUST BETTER MAKE SURE – THE SOCIETY WHOSE DAYS ARE NUMBERED – HAS FREEDOM OF SPEECH . . . AND A SENSE OF HUMOR.
