talk about . . . ‘David approaching Young Adulthood’ (post below) . . . and everything going black-out electric, badly.
just in case you have been living in your studio 24/7 or are like JOSH HARRIS, down in Vegas playing poker 24/7 . . . the art world in general was shocked and saddened to learn via the NEW YORK POST early today that 2 young men integral to a very hip and chic – but very happening part of the art scene here, and internationally, and with definite bonafide street cred to their names, were caught up in a vicious Chelsea nightclub ‘brawl’ that left them hurt, and in the news in a way – that couldn’t have made anybody happy.
STAVROS NIARCHOS III, only 26, son of the Greek shipping magnate of the same name, and a player on the hi-end art scene, along with his pal, the gifted curator and ‘pop-up’ gallerist, VLADIMR RESTOIN ROTFELD, 27, son of the former editor of FRENCH VOGUE, CARINE ROITFELD were hurt in a wild and out-of-control ‘Meatpacking melee’ – that sent their friend to the hospital. and not just any friend, but Monaco’s young Prince PIERRE CASIRAGH, 24, grandson to GRACE KELLY, and son to Princess Caroline of Monaco. so the club explosion was, in ultra current art speak, ocean sized, as well. as in . . . it was sure to make tabloid waves, if not international headlines.
accused of assaulting the ‘four jet-setters’ – was former NYC night club owner ADAM HOCK, a hefty 47.
the attack took place at trendy nightclub Double Seven, and according to the post article, “Pierre’s face looked broken, with deep cuts and blood everywhere. He looked like he needed plastic surgery.”
apparently the young prince was cold cocked, some call that sucker punched – and sent flying, across the room, landing “badly” on a table. Members of Hock’s group, which included catwalk models Natasha Poly, Valentina Zalyaeva and Anja Rubik, said the prince and his entourage strolled over to their table, “and were being completely obnoxious” – “insulting the models and swigging from a $500 bottle of vodka on Hock’s table”.
“Hock then allegedly punched out Niarchos, 26, and quickly landed blows on downtown hipsters Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld, 27, and Diego Marroquin, 33 – as the flustered models frantically tried to break it up. Casiraghi was taken to New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical center and released later Saturday, sources said. Hock – the former owner of the Hawaiian Tropic Zone in Times Square – was charged with four counts of third-degree assault . . . Friends of Casiraghi claimed Hock was the instigator. ‘The prince walked up to the table, and Adam just slammed him for no reason’, one witness said. ‘Stavros jumped in to help Pierre, and then he got slammed in the face’ . . . whereas for his part, Hock’s “power lawyer, Salvatore Strazzullo, said, ‘My client was having a nice time with a married couple and a lady friend and a group of very beautiful women, and these individuals were jealous, and they resorted to elementary-school tactics.
My client is not Bruce Lee . . . These four guys are trust-fund babies who think the world is owed to them. They are like spoiled brats”.
of the group VLADIMIR RESTOIN ROITFELD has the most street cred in the art world – he is probably most notorious for resurrecting the career of skuzzy hardcore early 80s NYC street artist – RICHARD HAMBLETON – aka the shadow. But his real claim to fame comes from the pop-up show he did here, in fashion week Feb 2011, in the super hip Chelsea meatpacking district (!!) for LA street artist RETNA, whose career really took off and went ballistic after that outing, which was not just chic – but super-produced right down to the dramatic lighting and cutting edge fonts on the ‘title’ cards. a bonafide art event – in the truest sense.
Only 27, RESTOIN ROITFELD seems to have a great flair for putting on shows which not only enliven the indie scene, but exhibit great style, and flexibility. he seems to have a very gifted curatorial eye, and in a few short years he has made a definite mark. ok. maybe he has trust fund roots, but he sure knows how to ‘rock’ them. it’s hard to believe he deserved a beat down, but you just can’t fool around, or take things for granted in New York City . . . this ain’t called the gritty city – for naught.
things can blow-up bad – out of nowhere.

‘ANDY VALMORBIDA and VLADIMIR RESTOIN ROITFELD PRESENT: RETNA – THE HALLELUJAH WORLD TOUR’, which ran FEB 10 – FEB 21, 2011, in a pop-up venue in the hip southwestern-most fringes of Chelsea, often called the meatpackign district, after its lowly origins.
STAVROS NIARCHOS – was also at the opening.
LA street artist, RETNA at the opening. although well-known in certain circles and esp in LA, from whence he sprung, RETNA’s career just went ballistic after this beautifully produced, dynamic blow-out of a show, his first real outing in New York City.

up, for an Academy Award Oscar for BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM, ‘Chico & Rita’ is a lovely, dreamy, steamy and often sad look back at beautiful times – its two main characters hurt by both their own tempestuous temperaments, and the biased days of 1948. This is a retro postcard that plays out as maybe the first Black Latin contender among the American and Japanese genres of animation. and its voice is adult, passionate and a reality check.
any comic book artist worth their salt, or any visual artist with soul for that matter, is going to marvel at how the characters’ black Latino features flit across the big screen and seep down into your soul. the backgrounds are literally ‘souvenir’ postcards filled with the lights and ambiance of cities and days, not that long past. and yes Chico arrives in the big apple, New York City, much the same way as the Cuban poet REINALDO ARENAS, of Julian Schnabel’s, ‘Before Night Falls’ did . . . amidst the wonder and magic of a big city snowfall. and like that eventful film, this one too, can steal your heart, and leave you secretly wiping away – the tears.
the movie is framed by a flashback stance, that works really well, and gets you in the heart. closer to the action and drama, than a straightforward narrative might have. but what really captures your heart – is the music. haunting and beyond soulful, it betrays the term ‘jazz’ – and takes on an absolutely otherworldiness. it’s not quite a better time or place – but it is a ‘moment’ of pure desire . . .

Parisian nightlife lightbulb x 1,000 and street artist ANDRE SARAIVA aka Mr. A – has made a great, great, fun, funny, fab and downright super whimsical hi-style, fashion forward, huge French come-back (!!) short film – straight out of the gate. it’s his debut film.
and, so is he . . . the BANKSY of France !!
even the lowly opening credits roll – with a fashion forward edge – a real retro-animated grace and wit !! – that would put even the most accomplished graphic designers on the scene today, to shame. and the sound track ? it’s just as delightful – VIRGINS, move over !!
‘The Shoe’ made in collaboration with France’s legendary J.M WESTON brand, ‘French Master Shoemaker Since 1891’ (!!) is ANDRE SARAIVA’s first stroll into moving pictures. A playful, light as air non-stop Parisian tumble, it rolls sweet and romantic – but always right on the edge of going somewhere – and yeah, you want to be, wherever it’s going, too.
Starring his friends, including the featured LEO FITZPATRICK, and the cutest of them all, ANNABELLE DEXTER-JONES, even OLIVIER ZAHM, of PURPLE gets a writing contribution credit.

ANDRE SARAIVA aka Mr. A is a bonafide celeb street artist, nightlife & hotel impresario, pop-up fashion designer, and even, now it seems a short filmmaker, and his star: LEO FITZPATRICK no less . . . growing up in France, he has been bombing Paris with his trademark Mr. A – since the mid 1980s. although he can’t do that any more, (at least there !! so watch out everywhere else) cause he’s under probation . . . his whimsical trademark stick figure with the hat – seems to have secretly delighted the French while at the same time they wanted to keep their historic streets, somewhat clean and decent. talk about a “conundrum” !!
but his .. . picturesque & winningly romantic tag was just like the pink panther – it hit a cultural nerve – and there was no going back.
In NYC nightlife circles he might be better known as the man who put the “B” in Bain, as in, at the hot celeb hang-out THE STANDARD. in the international art fair circles – he might be better known as the guy behind the popular and ever hip LE BARON pop-up nightclubs. his best friend ? OLIVIER ZAHM of PURPLE. and his current GF: ANNABELLE DEXTER JONES, you know, the little half sister of the amazin’ RONSONS. so I guess he’s the reigning King of all internet searches, who wants to take back his street crown, before everyone forgets – from whence it all started.

GERALD FERGUSON’S – CHORAL READING . . . is being presented to-nite at CANADA
SAT, FEB 11, 2012 – the performance begins at 7 PM & a reception will follow.
In 1972 GERALD FERGUSON scored a reading of his Standard Corpus of Present Day English Language Usage Arranged By Word Length in 20 units for a chorus of 26 voices. (seriously !!)
It was performed at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design that same year.
. . . Ferguson considered the ‘Corpus’ one of his most important works, once describing it as “a variable serial sculpture through time”.

I really like that term, Blue Collar conceptualism. even though he was an academic, as in teacher (?) it still fits the bill, though it would take a better, or at least more patient scribe than I, to lay it down for ya. maybe I’ll try to get some thoughts on that – from the show’s curator, and long-time Ferguson associate and student, Luke Murphy. it’s hard to get across just how huge New York City is, I mean just size-wise and energy-wise, let alone ‘stance’-wise and ‘status’-wise. let’s just say it’s true: the city never sleeps, the subways always run, and someone is always out there – jockeying to take over your turf !!
and as big as New York is – the art world is even bigger.
not only because in this century of internet communication, it runs international, as in world-wide. as opposed to city-state, as in the days of let’s say, the Medicis !! BUT – the art world and its trends, are shaping our culture like never before, while at the same time – giving voice, providing the stepping stones, the talking points, the tipping points . . . that enable our fast moving culture as a whole – to make a pathway through today’s overload of information.
hey, whatever catches your eye – usually catches your soul. if not your attention.
the age-old maxim: a picture is worth a thousand words is still the biggest truth in town. esp if you narrow down ‘picture’ to ‘photo’. it’s a no-brainer that the visual, as opposed to let’s say the ‘mythical’ impulse of the Greek dawn of civilization – rocks our world. ‘image’ – is king, and digital imaging rules, from the internet-based Facebook to the animated billboard advertising of modern mega cities. to the moving picture block buster style-setting celebrity casting movies, to the briefest of super bowl ‘spots’. and it all comes down to you: the style and vibe – of your ‘life’.
let alone how you manage – to move through it. long live the king.
so it’s interesting to note that we have a little mini-battle of the image, not to mention the personalities !! – being played out on the lately very much play-ed out, as in exhausted and mundane Saturday night opening routine – ok, like the term, art world stage, better ? in New York City to-night !!
and it goes something like this: celebrity art vs. the nitty gritty, street art vs. academic art, megawatt nightlife vs. rural isolation, and even Canada vs. France !!
with a little New York ‘slaw’, as in ‘snark’ – thrown in for good measure !!
SO that would be the double-headed openings to-nite of French street artist and nightlife superstar ANDRE SARAIVA aka Mr. A at HALF GALLERY vs. the ‘conceptual’ choral performance of the just barely recognized art theorist, teacher and ‘painter’ GERALD FERGUSON, who travailed up in the remote and nightlife-less wilds of Nova Scotia !!
wow, vs. is such a big force this year !! or, what !!
talk about competing head spaces – competing for your art dollar !! ha. it’s all good.
it takes two to dance. and two to fight. this is the art world – may all sides win !!
you know that other big maxim, tip of the hat to the Chinese !!. . . there ain’t no yin – without that yang !!
and oh yeah, you’re asking . . . but what about the ‘slaw’ !!
ha. that’s ‘coleslaw’ . . . as in what they throw on the food in New York City, to keep things lively, spicy, and just plain ole down home Lower East Side deli – good !!
as in delicious, and decidedly wicked. and a bit unfair I might add – but, hey we just said, jockeying for position is the spice of life. yin needs yang, and so, yo !! no complaints and let’s just set it straight for the record.
why is to-nite is a little more spicy ? and no . . . I would NOT say playful !!
because one of the ‘blogs’ that engage this scene has a foot in both camps – and that might even extend . . . to foot-in-mouth !! (and you can see its giving me no end of delight to observe. esp with the revved-up & absolutely coincidental opening nite pairing.
still WTF ? o.k. here it is, for whatever it’s worth.
it sure ain’t huge, or even that funny – but hey whatever it takes to make the night – just a little more lively, and game plan-wise it’s right on point: it’s ‘vs.’ versus the usual suspects.
