~BUSHWICK . . CHRIS STAIN & BILLY MODE

somehow . . this path through the streets of BUSHWICK, turned – realist !!
can’t stop without including . . CHRIS STAIN and BILLY MODE !!

INVENT THE FUTURE – by CHRIS STAIN and BILLY MODE.
spray paint on 28 x 57 ft. wall, in Bushwick. Brooklyn. NYC.

CHRIS STAIN (@chrisstain1972) took the photo, painted the figures.
BILLY MODE (@billymode) came up with the “positive quote” – INVENT THE FUTURE / a geometric 3-D maze of a background.

watch: CHRIS STAIN & BILLY MODE – making . . INVENT THE FUTURE – Time Out New York

in this brief time lapse clip, which dates the mural as APRIL 2013, and places it on the corner of Troutman St & Wykoff in Brooklyn . .
what the artists say, not only helps bring their techniques into focus, but also their – leaning forward, with hope into the future – vision. motivation. content.
it also gives you an incredible sense of just how much street art there is, up – in Brooklyn.
and the incredible diversity.

there is also a really good interview with BILLY MODE, with great pix on . . . STREET ART NYC . .

~BUSHWICK . . OJIDJO

another monochrome piece, but of a way different, well, not that !! different – of a nature !!
it’s also interesting, how monochrome, gray scale palettes, and hyper-realist, though in this case, a more fluid, looser, expressionistic/painterly, draftsmanship, i.e. we called it: drawing by hand, lol – is re-surging, and takes on an even more powerful stance – in the age of digital reproduction, and color – cheap and easy color, all kinds of color, and even brightness ‘filters’ – everywhere.

street mural by – OJIJDO, aka oji aka @ojijdo . . in Bushwick !!

you can access his Instagram feed via web . . @toris64 – Instagram

OJI appears to be a new age global citizen !!
his website’s language of choice is French, but there are no details as to his bio, or nationality !!
it doesn’t ring as Quebecois, no posts from Montreal !!
a lot from Paris though, got to to be be from France, and – at very least, European.
but it all translates to: HOPE !!
hey !!
vives les new age Frenchies !!

~BUSHWICK . . HENDRIK BEIKIRCH

a recent Bushwick mural by . . German artist HENRIK BEIKIRCH aka ECB
‘Oulad Bouzid III’, 2015
spray paint & emulsion paint on a wall, Bushwick. NYC, USA

PHOTO: via instagram . . posted by @toris64

this mural is striking for many reasons, including its specific locale, large scale, dynamic composition, and the hyper, yet fluid & rhythmic . . realism. one has to say, it is exceptionally expressive for a monochrome, or limited color palette project. it shines from within, its point of view is on the low-down, deeply felt, against the grain – a point of no return. very much like an old format photograph, in fact.

it is also striking, because it is the portrait of an old man, a common man, not a rapper, not a dead poet. not a cartoon character. not a cypher, not even a ‘militant’ citizen of the streets. it is the deeply felt portrait of an old man of the real streets, the real streets . . of Morocco. I guess that makes it: realism. it’s a kind of grim realism, in truth, or maybe ‘gritty’ is the better word. it’s not stylized, it’s not comic. ECB calls this series ‘Trades’ and its subjects are the old school skilled artisans who are often overlooked, but are the gears that keep things running. Oulad Bouzid III is a street barber. it’s a global project.

but beyond that, there’s something utterly fascinating in this mural, and it goes beyond words – which is just how it should be. it marries art & graphics and realism – with . . a somber cast, something along the lines of . . . the things that are getting lost.
the tribal transformation – of society . . . as a whole.
the elders.

as well, technically – the underlying graphic design sensibility, which anchors the mighty skillful painting technique – is not just way ahead of the curve – it is PROFOUND. Silent. Moving.
you can also see this ,in the minimalist design of the artist’s website, to the way he writes his name on the wall, above the piece – in a kind of computer-driven block letter ‘scroll’.

SO . . .
if you haven’t noticed, STREET ART, STREET MURALS, GRAFFITI, GRAFF, WRITERS, STICKERS, slaps, decals, stencils, one-off ink/sharpie work, legos, and other 3-d bits & pieces !! – whatever !! are having a big resurgence. part of this is the wider acceptance, and more legal venues. here in NYC, old hoods, like Bushwick, still in the throes of gentrification seem to be wide open for the taking. but if a tree falls in the forest, is there a sound ?
turns out Instagram feeds are really well suited to the documenting – taking pix of this highly mobile & shifting scene. infinite armies of seekers – on the march, capturing the vitality & throwing it back at ya & out there, locally & globally.
globally, street art is an art of ‘direction’.
a statement of will, an expression, a theater for change, freedom of speech, and a desire for . . empowerment.
some people travel . . to to put their marks & missions on the world we live in, others travel to capture the action. it’s a wide open movable feast, that feels almost . . medieval in nature.

~BUSHWICK . . walls

on my way to the ‘CAP MATCHES COLOR’ – ‘TWO DECADES OF DIGGING’ – book signing at LOW BROW ARTIQUE, last week, in BUSHWICK, BROOKLYN – I had to marvel at how big the hardcore mural street art had blown-up, yet I was totally struck dumb – at the same time by all the downtown chic, hipster & very chi chi upgraded bars and restaurants, yes even the wine shops. how nightlife populated the hood had become, since the frontier days of the hardcore EASTERN DISTRICT, and then . . AD HOC, and then just a tiny bit later, FACTORY FRESH.
I mean, even in what 2008 ? it was still pretty industrial, and deserted except for indigenous bodegas dotting every corner, and then ROBERTA’S PIZZA came on the scene. and that was – it !!
flash forward a few years, and some wine bars opened up, with folk music in the basements. now it’s still deserted streets, but dotted, and densely – with ultra hip eating & drinking venues.
I vividly remembered, going to Roberta’s in the very first week it opened !! half empty to, after a great fab opening, a big . . . AD DeVILLE show at Factory Fresh, which ran in Dec of 2008 – just before the Bernie Madoff scandal – broke, lol !!
it seemed such appropriate timing.

see: DeVILLE’S HOLIDAY SPECIAL – FACTORY FRESH, DEC 2008 !!

~DeVILLE’S HOLIDAY SPECIAL/FACTORY FRESH

there was a JAYE MOON lego diorama – stuck to the wall. center – second image up from the bottom – just outside where AD HOC GALLERYused to open its doors, on Bogart Street. besides the historic location – the piece also had an historic theme: the American Revolution !!
it said: NO MORE ENGLISH !!

I found it interesting that it was so clean, and not vandalized. street code of honor ?

it even had a little, clear plastic window with a lego man head, for a handle . . .

that you could swing open to reveal . . .

a miniature HISTORIC RICHMOND TOWN ‘document’, still in there, intact. and not glued down, or in any other way secured.
JAYE MOON is a young female street artist, from Korea, North or South ? Korea is as specific as the bio got. being an immigrant myself, from Montreal . . I recognized the newcomers attraction to American history, esp the part about the founding fathers. it really wasn’t that long ago either, as these things go, and so much change in just a couple hundred years. it also served as a statement to the . . violence and war – that carved this nation, just as violence and the war have carved every other territory throughout time memorial, going back to Stonehenge, and prob even past that. the gun won the West, subdued the ‘first’ natives & even settled the Civil War.

across the street from the deceptively simple lego story, things were looking decidedly, grim.
the mighty . . GOOMBA at center.

the ‘smiling’ come to get ya – grim reaper !!

a ghost army, the un-dead converge.

F.P. – a paid-by . . FORD CAR guerrilla ad ?

READY MIX
BUSHWICK, in fact all of Brooklyn, is like one big urban Disney tour of street art, yours for the cruising. get down, go free.
come to your own conclusions.

a hard hat wearing . . baby GOLLUM ?
straight outta Lord of the Rings, and onto the raw Bushwick streets.

one of my fave: GOLD POO . . !!
I think we have to give a nod here to ABE LINCOLN Jr, and his groundbreaking, poo trackin’ little birdie/chick: Char !!

a spinning, ‘baby’ – top ?!!

A.V.S.P. wheat paste, forget trying to take those wheat paste babies down.

dethhhhhh

wtf . . a vintage clothing selling mobile . . on wheels.

THE MOBILE VINTAGE SHOP – EVERYTHING INSIDE $10

a storefront . . caught at the very moment of rapid gentrification !!
talk about your . . ‘transitioning’ !!

a plate glass window is even more interesting than a brick wall – in the right hands.

#fresh #plaid by jywlkr

now, that’s what I call modernism. de-construction, and new construction – all at once.
slick, stick. raw. random, beautiful. intelligent. restrained & . . minimalist !!

with more than a nod, to BARBARA KRUGER.
amazing to reflect upon how influential, and insightful that 1987 show of hers, ‘I SHOP / THEREFORE I AM’ – was. at MARY BOONE, lol.
and ps: BARBARA KRUGER, born 1945 in Newark, NEW JERSEY. go Jersey !!

Because.
Capitalism.

an ‘indigenous’ house – still standing, there are still blocks like this.
but, for how long ?

some kind of Popeye collage, not sure if the different layers were meant to be, or were add-ons ?

great detail on the ‘foundation’ frontier figure !!

layers of paste, and layers of . . metaphor.

a girlie fairy princess – on a metal gate.

old school Madonna.

grotto / shrine behind bars – a living throwback / monument . . to the original European immigrants who homesteaded this formerly blue collar hood.

Greek myth – it was hard to tell where commercial signs began, and street art became paid commissions ?

DENTON

a great . . geo-mix / figurative genesis . . mash-up.
esp spectacular – at night !!

anybody who quilts knows that to be an Amish baby steps pattern, at the top.

change is . . a-coming.

MAAYAN ZIKBERMAN . . .is running a pop-up of her new age sugar crystal rock candy line, SWEET SABA at the the M Bar on the 3rd floor.

MAAYAN is . . “creating an alien library of edible candy and chewing gum inspired by chakra & birthstones that are thought to have healing qualities. During workshops, customers can watch Maayan at her counter making candy from scratch & testing ingredients. This mystical shop will be exclusive for the holidays, offering people a way to restore themselves through fun sweet things just in time for the New Year.” ~ gallery press release

a colorful & charming container of small chocolate ‘pebbles’ – is only $10.

the sugar crystals, are higher in price – depending on the size.
they look like high-end fashion faux – gem stones, so pretty !!
never mind for eating, how about just for . . gazing.

an array of rings ? no . . . sweets !!
candy cure – anybody ?
some ingredients are paired to soothe . . hurt feelings, or even broken hearts ?!!
feeling down ? suck on one of these !!
MAAYAN works with a “flavor scientist to pair each shape with an unexpected taste.”

these candies are really gorgeous, totally love how they are packed just like crystals, or mineral rocks – in a natural science museum !!

I know one thing, hard to choose !!

~JULIA ZANGRILLI . . FORT GANSEVOORT – S Bar

JULIA ZANGRILLI – ARTISANAL PERFUMER
2ND FLOOR – S BAR
NOV 11 – JAN 10, 2016
FORT GANSEVOORT – 5 NINTH AVE, MEATPACKING DISTRICT, DOWNTOWN NYC

for: JULIA ZANGRILLI workshops at FORT GANSEVOORT

NOVA PERFUMER . . . JULIA ZANGRILLI
at her unisex custom scent ‘pop-up’ shop at FORT GANSEVOORT, on the second floor – S Bar.
see: NOVA

“JULIA ZANGRILLI . . . began as a self-taught perfumer, instinctually mixing custom scents for friends in her home lab. in 2011 she attended the Grasse Institute of Perfumery, in France, where she developed an understanding for the oil dynamics & chemistry behind fragrance composition. Julia then began to develop custom fragrances that she could tailor to an individual’s taste & body chemistry using only high quality phthalate-free materials. This marked the beginning of her company NOVA.
She has since released a retail fragrance named CHAKRA, and done collaborations with OPENING CEREMONY, ANNA SHEFFIELD & LOUP CHARMANT. She will be releasing a series of musks with URBAN OUTFITTERS shortly.” ~ gallery press release

her display – was also first class !! and very inspired.

“JULIA ZANGRILLI will set up a unisex custom scent bar inspired by the collaborative & entrepreneurial atmosphere surrounding Fort Gansevoort & she will also host astrological fragrance-making workshops & natural raw material classes where attendees will leave with custom eau de parfums.” ~ gallery press release

KATE, a Capricorn, a more grounded version of a hoof-footed Zodiak beast . . and not one to follow impulse alone !! was very very attracted to the NOVA CAPRICORN fragrance, and hopes to go back and score a customized version.

while I, being an alpha Aires !! and a hoof-footed animal too, bye the way, but definite not ‘grounded’, more like forging new paths on the teetery-top of the mountain heights !! was totally . . set on fire, as I approached the NOVA Aires offering – at the beginning of the counter.
literally, my body chemistry went up at least 10 fiery degrees !!

at the NOVA counter, perfume + tactile sensuality . . were on display, in a most visual & exquisite way.
very striking.

a vial costs about $125. something like that. and in fact, when you purchase it from Julia in person at Fort Gansevoort, she will even custom tweak it to your own chemistry, and I guess, inner Zodiac being !!
absolutely chic. absolutely tres, in fact pretty completely reasonable . . . for a custom high quality blend that works so well, and delivers such – magic !!

I also really liked how, in the midst of such a highly, as in . . well-designed, albeit craft/artisanal/fashion presentation, the labels were . . . in a ‘hand-lettered’ font style.
and, seemingly with a sharpie, at that.
they might even have been . . hand-lettered.

gorgeous, magical . . or what ?!! and hand-letterd, !! how brave new world !!
and I mean that most sincerely, with designer fonts so easily available via digital world – all things done-by-hand seem to have gotten off to a brand new start, a new life.
at one time, hand-lettered signs were such a no no, I cannot not even begin to tell you.
so, such Aires . . thought-cloud, or what !!

LEO !! the Lion apparently gets . . on fire, too.
bring out the – claws !!
and, get your inner fire on – with NOVA, fer sure.

CARA MARIE PIAZZA . . curated a ‘color apothecary’ and ‘natural dye’ bar on the ground floor – aka ‘L Bar’.

this is one of CARA MARIE PIAZZA’s custom dyed pieces, hanging on the old exposed brick wall, the work looked so fab, and ahead-of-the game – on the lovingly preserved historic venue !!

CARA MARIE PIAZZA . . natural and artisanal dyer at the L Bar, Fort Gansevoort.

She creates one-of-a-kind textiles using only natural dyestuffs such as botanicals, plant matter, minerals, non-toxic metals & food waste. organic hand-dyed T by CARA MARIE PIAZZA, available for purchase – from her small ‘capsule’ collection of clothing on display.

CARA MARIE PIAZZA: custom shirt, absolutely gorgeous, well-made, and . . ethereal !!

the detailing on the shirt was phenomenal.
just sheer, enough. if you can come up with $596 for a custom shirt – which is a very good price for how these things go !! this is your . . baby !!
you can have it custom hand-dyed, by Cara . . to your specifications, as part of the package.

look at the beautifully detailed and shaped collar.
if you stitch, or do any kind of skilled handiwork, you can easily appreciate this item.
plus, lol note the re-claimed vintage wood hotel hanger !!

the custom shirt was displayed beautifully, hanging from a lovely branch – just the right size, length and thickness.

in fact, the whole ‘fort’ felt like a wonderful Alice in Wonderland, new age florist shop . .

with fresh blooms – at every corner.

in fact, it was in this nook, that we found influential, powerhouse fashion writer . . . CHIOMA NNADI, now at Vogue.
no surprise.

one last look at BAR L & CARA MARIE PIAZZA’s skillful, artisanal & beguiling pop-up, before we moved . . . upstairs.

CARA MARIE PIAZZA . . will also curate a color apothecary & natural dye bar at the L bar, on the ground floor. In addition to natural dyes, the apothecary will sell locally grown fresh & dried flowers, earth pigments, barks, spices & clays that customers can use at home.
as well, she will present several workshops.
