UP ON . . THE ROOF. 5 STORIES HIGH.
BABYLON – in WINTER !!

lol, PAT McCARTHY just sent me this photo of his pigeon coops, (he has 2, one for the breeders and one for the young teens) collectively called ‘BABYLON COOPS’, up on his Brooklyn roof-top. he has a friend watching over them, while he is out west – and he said yes, they survived the last week’s wintery blast.
ok !!

and, yes – I have been up on that roof – but in the fall, no snow. and it was dizzying-ly dis-orienting around the edges, but super amazing. he waves a big black flag to get the pigeons to fly out into the vast Brooklyn sky. he throws real reindeer pelts over the coops to protect them from the harsh winter weather. he bought them off eBay, straight from Norway, or some place life that. I was too entranced by the pigeons, and the homemade gear he devised for them – to remember all the facts.

you can see the reindeer pelts piled onto the coop on the left in the photo. that’s technically the ‘Babylon’ coop for the breeders. the coop to the right, is for the young jerks, lol. it’s called ‘JOEYS COOP’.

~ANTONE KONST . . WAND: 1000 DAYS / w just a tiny lil’ SEAN VEGEZZI trippin’ !!

ANTONE KONST . . also did the cover art for the newest WAND LP & CD – ‘1000 DAYS’.
– in a word: fab. and primitive & full of meaning.
symbolism gone animal-istic, 2015 style.
that is . . with just a tinge of DIY.

‘1000 DAYS’ . . . is WAND’S 3rd LP – released Sept 25 2015 on ‘Drag City’.

this is what it looks like . . in a Greenpoint apt !!
and – NO, you don’t want to unwrap it. lol !!

this is what . . the back looks like, in a lil’ ole Jersey City Heights house.
yep, it’s signed.
best XMAS gift ever – somebody had to run around pretty hard, I heard to chase down the man – to get it signed, he’s a busy guy !!
and fer sure, you DO NOT want to unwrap it !!
cellophane . . . .

ANTONE also made a T-shirt – for the album.
sorry, can’t exactly say on who – something to do with Kate’s lil bro, Theo & his B’day !!
and he said: best birthday gift – ever !!
as in ‘ev-ah !!

this is the back – I love how it’s black & white, esp as the LP cover is a gorgeous acid, stone wash-y, expressionistic, big on the brushwork . . yellow !!
kind of a ‘ruby’ yellow, if you know what I mean ?
I love black & white in general these days – it’s really up to speed.
also . . the gnarly ‘fable’ dudes – too much !!
sorry, can’t say where.
something to do with SEAN VEGEZZI, and ‘CRISIS’ . . . and if you know Sean Vegezzi, then we can just leave it . . at that !!
all red & black this place – was. and scary. the future zone. void & scary.
a few handmade artifacts. the quiet eeriness of the aftermath. in a deserted building.
except, for the mechanical grinding of the still running escalators !!
not quite music to my ears, but the only . . . damn sound.
if T-shirts . . could talk.

ah, the future . . . forward.

just go listen to the music . . wave that – WAND.

~NICHOLAS STEINDORF & ANTONE KONST: BROOKLYN . . PARIS: FUTURE FORWARD

Brooklyn-based artists, NICHOLAS STEINDORF & ANTONE KONST, both Yale MFA 2014 graduates – have been invited to participate in a big, fast forward / online exhibition space – that is taking shape in Paris.

see: NICHOLAS STEINDORF / http://nicholassteindorf.com/
see: ANTONE KONST / http://antonekonst.com/

one of the main organizers of this far flung & global endeavor of the imagination is . . . JEAN-BAPTISTE LENGLET.
you can find him on . . FACEBOOK.

the VIRTUAL DREAM CENTER is an online contemporary art ‘museum’ that will exist solely in your dreams, not.
but . . close !!
it’s exhibition space that is solely . . DIGITAL !!

great graphic design, or what !!

their kickstarter campaign successfully raised their goal of 2,861 Euros.
the page is in French, bien sur – but if you open the page in google Chrome – it should auto translate for you.
see: their kickstarter page
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/933765046/virtual-dream-center-lancement-du-musee

this future-tense, forward looking, & most definite cutting edge . . VIRTUAL DREAM CENTER – arises out of Paris and all the exhibition space is . . . digital.
the digital space is organized around a video ‘game’ format . . wherein the ‘users’ / translate ‘exhibition goers’ (lol) will “walk-through’ the exhibition using their keyboard ‘arrow’ keys & ‘mouse’.

needless to say – the ‘lay-out’ and graphics – are to be noted !!
tres chic and, well . . . . d-r-e-a-m-y !!
though the spirit is global – and ultimately: hopeful, it seems to have an apocalyptic edge – I wonder why, duh.

it’s also interesting, form both a digitial & symbolic point of view, as well as a matter of graphic industrial design – that this virtual ‘display’ case – has walls of . . concrete.

here’s a peek . . into the entrance of the main exhibition ‘hall’ !!

I like like the reference to . . CHINA.

this is an image from the: VIRTUAL DREAM CENTER – HALL DES SCULPTEURS
interesting, right ?!!
I like the manipulation of ‘space’, the minimalism, the construction / desconstruction graphics.
very futuristic, full of infinite potential & ‘concept’ – yet it also seems very ancient Greek.

The first set of shows are launching in JAN 2016 – with 3 shows:
1. a large group exhibit curated by ANTONE KONST that takes the form of a ‘sculptural garden’ with digital work by . . JON MERRIT, AUSTIN LEE, MAAYAN STRAUSS . . and including NICHOLAS STEINDORF & ANTONE KONST, and a “ton more super talented people.”
2. a solo show by JONATHAN MEEESE.
3. a solo show by NICHOLAS STEINDORF, showing his ‘ZACH – VERSION 1’.
here’s some images from . .
NICHOLAS STEINDORF’S . . . ‘ZACH – VERSION 1’ – Virtual Dream Center installation:

ps: I told you, nudity – is creeping back, though not in the sexualized, glammed-up, or even twisted-out, 70s, 80s, or 90s way.
but more . . back to bare bones, humanity & survival. bio wonder. life.

REPOST from @scene_in_nyc

~KANA TOGASHI . . ADRIANA MINOLITI / SAFFRON BK – BROOKLYN / Porn and back.

so, here we go . . .
from KANA’S FLOWER SHOP . . . to PORN !!
in 5 seconds !!
with a quick stop in Buenos Aires, and landing finally in pop star – Japan.
you know, connect the dots – artlovers style !!
hold on to – your seats !!

you just never know what’s going to happen when you walk into a flower shop !!
walk on the wild side, Brooklyn !!

I mean, we were just talking about porn.
and the current, mostly ‘void of’ — state . . in the contemporary art scene. except for:
LISA YUSKAVAGE & her fantasy nudity.
LANDON MORGAN & his water tower tattoo bondage.

SAFFRON FLOWER & DESIGN SPACE
31 HANSON PLACE, BROOKLYN, NY – FORT GREENE

so my friend, KANA TOGASHI . . runs a very cool & very special flower / design shop in Brooklyn.
she also shows art work sometimes, and hopes to show more.
she’s an artist herself, and long story short . . I’ve known her, seriously: as in deeply understood . . . ever since she meet my Kate at LaGuardia High School, back in the late 90s – 2000 years.
Millennials !! kids grow up fast – in New York City.
they are so . . put together, so smart.
so Indie fierce, yet so able to function, & excel from within the system.
the first real digital generation – I wonder if that, has something to do with it ?

I mean, does Grumpy Bert have a fridge for storing flowers . . in his shop, no !!
yep. that’s my reflection in the glass door – busted, lordy. and by – own self.

KANA, and her husband TETSUJI sell the most gorgeous, unusual and fresh flowers. you can custom order, big and little events. they deliver, as well as input on design. they did the remarkable flowers for our show, ‘UNDER THE VOLCANO’ last June.
they are the go-to flower artisans – for many private events, such as weddings y’all – and special events in public places, esp in Brooklyn.
name one, one word: FRANNY’S . . !!

they also design gardens, big and small, indoor & outdoor – corporate & private.
and . . maintain them.
check out: SAFFRON-BROOKLYN
@saffronbk

they are also the go-to florist for many local artists – who actually use flowers in their work, or want to stage photo ops with the freshness of well, come on guys – stay with me, the velvet-y power of . . bloomin’ hyper realist flower . . ‘porn’.
name one: KAREN AZOULAY, who presented the well received . . ‘The Perennial Sunday’ at THE GRECIAN SHELTER, Prospect Park, Brooklyn last August 2, 2015, using flowers custom-provided by SAFFRON.
Karen also used Saffron flowers for her beautiful catalog, ‘Flowers and Their Meanings – A Guide for deciphering’.
see: KAREN AZOULAY project – on the SAFFRON WEBSITE

SAFFRON also sells a curated selection of local D.I.Y. including hand-knit items, ceramics, cutting edge jewelry design items, and . . a few pieces of vintage here and there – just to mix it up.

it’s a bit of a movable feast, quite literally, with the store evolving over time, and changing seasonally, just like the flowers do. Kana opened the store in 2009.

they also sell art, on a casual basis right now – but watch out, world !!
and yes, that’s KANA, peeking out – the ancient ancestor eyes, give her away.

a hand-knit kitty at SAFFRON, made by local artisan, DIY artist/crafter: MIHOKO . . who just happens to be Kana’s mom. love that little pink nose.

I love it so, because it reminds me of MUURZ’s work, her ‘bunny’ sticker.
translate: cutting edge. not just cuddly.
and the street artist GOATBUNNY, from Montreal – too. animals – rule the streets these days. whether in stickers, or in logos. lots of critters, mostly warm & fuzzy – as opposed to predatory / jungle. and esp canaries, and little chickies and, yellow ducks. hello . . Abe Lincoln, JR.
a lot of them are riffs off traditional Japanese woodblock print art, the flatness, the line work – meets Snoopy by way of Looney Tunes, if . . you know what I mean.

it’s also super funny, and great. how some of the really far-out and yet unrecognized artists of my generation – are finally getting some time in the limelight, thanks to people like Kana.
skills. and imagination.
way ahead of the pack. and I’m not just talking about Outsider Art. Mihoko, and I – could have been sticker artists – if born in a future tense.
I coulda been a sticker artist – put that on my tombstone.

ps: MIHOKO means RICE FLOWER, and KANA means . . vegetable flower, so. so sweet. and so . . apt.

so, the store was closing, and we still had a lot to talk about – so we moved over to Kana’s place in Bushwick.
that’s ADRIANA MINOLITI. Kana calls her Adri, she’s just arrived for a 2 week visit from Argentina, and she’s an artist . . whom Kana has known for quite some time. I got the feeling right away, even though she was so low key, that there was a bigger picture just around the corner, the tip of the iceberg, as they say.
and, long story short: yes.

this was an early painting by ADRIANA on Kana’s wall.
one quick glance at her IG – and you can see how far – her work had come.

new work by ADRIANA MINOLITI – via Instagram @minoliti
check out: @minoliti

and OMG – there it was: ABSTRACT PORN . . . . on her website.
I can’t explain, it’s just a full-on CGI animation.
you have to just watch it – for yourself !!!!!
if you missed that link: ADRIANA MINOLITI – ABSTRACT PORN VIDEO CLIP – ON HER HOMEPAGE

I mean, here I was, I had just walked into a flower shop & I was hot on the trail, unknown to me . . of what I had just written about – the day before: NUDITY, and . . BONDAGE.
I mean how often do things line up like that.

bench by ADRIANA MINOLITI – photo via artist
this piece wasn’t typical of her work, one reason it grabbed my attention, but, besides the beautiful forms, gorgeous light, and function – it dialoged with me and the recent work . . NYC-based PETER SUTHERLAND . . had exhibited in London. those concrete minimalist benches with the far-out desert landscape photo screens.

and then this project from her 2015 show: ‘PLAYPEN’, 2015 – curated by CARLOS HERRERA.. at the CENTRO CULTURAL RECOLETA in Beunos Aires – jumped at me. so, retro.
image also from her website.

retro, did someone say: retro ?!!
meanwhile back in Kana’s apt, ADRIANA told me she was into . . RETRO PORN !!
and, she pulled out a zine she had made.

I was . . speechless.
Yuskavage to Landon Morgan to .. Adriana Minoliti.
the classic . . art world ‘bread crumb’ trail – unfurls.

retro porn collage – by ADRIANA MINOLITI.
wow, suddenly I was confronted by more naked art in 2 days, than I had seen in years.
at one point it was all over: Soho, Chelsea, uptown.
from JEFF KOONS to THOMAS RUFF . . to JOHN CURRIN.

that got us starting to talk about the bondage art that’s all over the IG, esp the riffs . . on traditional Japanese bondage art.
Lordy, if KANA doesn’t pull out . . the LINDA YAMAMOTO – BOOK !!
apparently, besides the traditional ‘art’ forms – it’s quite the norm for young Japanese music pop stars to put out what amounts to glamorized selfie – nudie . . books.
often quite racy, well it’s naked photos, duh . . including a little ‘bondage’.
in a word: dig that plastic – covered body.
‘LOVE HOTEL’ – by MARIKO MORI does come to mind.
her expression – is priceless.
someone else can write . . the Masters thesis.

well. it’s not so far fetched. one word: KARDASHIANS.

from flowers to porn. what can I say. hop, skip & just a jump away.

the ‘girl’ next door.
the girl in the flower shop. and, the girl from Buenos Aires.
hop, skip. and jump.

PHOTOS: NANCY SMITH

Adriana Minoliti is currently represented by the AUGUSTINO FERRERIYA GALLERY – in Puerto Rico, and that’s where she’s heading to, after New York.

Adriana
is also a part of a (famous) woman’s art collective based in South America: PINTORAS.
yep, check them out: Pintoras on the web,
and . . PintorAs on FB

SAFFRON FLOWERS & SPACE DESIGN . . will selling FLOWERS at MAGASIN POP-UP . . a monthly event organized by CASEY McVIKER, at BAR MATCHLESS in Brooklyn – 557 Manhattan Ave, just off McCaren Park . . in the band room.
a yard sale & DIY / artisan showplace . . in a bar – love it !!

it’s this Sunday Jan 24, 2016 / from 12 noon until 9 pm.
that is, if it don’t get . . snowed under.
fingers crossed.
it will happen monthly, anyway. so let it snow, or let it . . not.
see: @magasin_popup

not, not. KNOT.
art is a big big knot, right now. fine art. porn art. photography. calligraphy. design. social media. DIY. CGI. stickers. water towers. street art. traditional art. global art. flower art. digital art . . to egg shell stickers. canvas to kits. ephemeral to carved in stone, burned into buildings, and flicking on your screens all night long.
and in the heart of that knot – ?
all roads lead to . . Brooklyn.
Brooklyn is the new Black.
Brooklyn is the new . . SILK Road.

~LISA YUSKAVAGE: THE BROOD & shout out: LANDON MORGAN !!

also at CAM !!!

‘LISA YUSKAVAGE: THE BROOD’
JAN 15 – APRIL 2, 2016
CAM / CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM ST.LOUIS
@camstl

one of my very fave artists, right at the top.
among her gender, if we have to break it down . . . and, time it: right up there with KARA WALKER.
I consider CINDY SHERMAN, the generation – preceding.

LISA YUSKAVAGE . . was born in Philadelphia in 1962, and is NYC-based.

from the CAM mission statement:
this show . . “is not so much a comprehensive survey as it is a thorough account of YUSKAVAGE’S development & identity as an artist.”

‘LISA YUSKAVAGE: THE BROOD’ . . is curated by CHRISTOPHER BEDFORD, Henry & Lois Foster Director of the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University & organized for the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis by JEFFREY USLIP, chief curator.

card for: ‘LISA YUSKAVAGE’, September 27 through November 5, 2011 / David Zwirner, 519 West 19th Street, NYC.
the image is: ‘Triptych’, 2011 (detail), oil on linen, Triptych, Each: 70-1/8 x 77-1/4 inches
the card itself is hard stock and measures 8 x 8-1/4 in.

this is the original . . invite card for Lisa’s 2011 show at DAVID ZWIRNER.
as you can see, it still sits on my desk, and that includes one major move !!

besides the fact that it looks like it was slightly ‘photo-shopped’, between the legs, lol in the CAM pr !!
this image represents so much that I love, including how brave it is !!
plus: folk art & history, composition. landscape imbued with artistic power, color theory. graphics. narrative etc etc. and obviously it’s still ringing, and THRILLING – with .. that key moniker: RELEVANCE.
and, her sister . . DYNAMICS.

but, it has an even more personal significance, or if you will . . . code (!!) – for me.
sis-tah !! keep them eyeballs . . open !!
and, free your soul !!

I didn’t get Lisa’s work for a long long time.
I thought it was way too kitschy, and cutie pie. wrong.

when I walked into this show in the Fall of 2011 – I was dumbstruck. it was like a big samurai sword crashed through my whole body, starting at the top of my head, and split me – in half.
I think they call that a eureka moment.
the bigger the mistake, the harder the fall ?
so, it reminds me of 2 things:
1. in art, NOTHING. nothing – is written in stone.
2. and keep your eyes – open. push past your ‘zones’.

I also find the show relevant – on a few more levels, at this very EXACT point in time – on the underground art scene.

I’m talking about the resurgence of strong, figurative, in-your-face young female artists, on the current, and very popping !! street scene.
name two: murrz & goatbunny !!
with their outrageous femme/wicked kitty/food stickers. very femme, but totally . . KILLAH.
keep those peepers – open !!

at the same time, it’s also interesting to consider how nudity – in general has vanished from the contemporary art scene.
ok, maybe young Harlem scene queen JORDAN CASTELL references nudity, but it’s not exactly the ‘playboy’ pop-up kind. and its: male. (mostly).
and psychological in nature.

in the street art mural / translate graffiti scene . . nudity is a big no no, I guess because that would be, and rightfully so !! – crossing the line – re what the public would tolerate.
but on the smaller. more intimate art scene, such as the world of tattoos, obviously – nudity reigns as ever. and it has many super chic faces too. as well as classic.
but watch out – it’s creeping in closer, to the art world in general – again.
I’m thinking about the sweet spot – where tattoo artists and street artists collide, as in the recent ‘TAT IT UP’ curated by MURRZ & ZROPRO at GRUMPY BERT, in Brooklyn.
specially: the water tower of . . tattoo artist LANDON MORGAN !!

and within that genre – there is also a strange, but very apparent, and very BIG esp on IG – resurgence of a very, very classic Japanese art form: bondage !!
who would – guess ?!!

lol. THE BROOD – THE BREEDERS vs THE BONDAGE MASTERS !!

LISA YUSKAVAGE to LANDON MORGAN . . in a flipped-out, in-your-face – nutshell battle of the ‘naked’ !!

LANDON MORGAN, detail, Boundless Brooklyn water tower kit, hand painted, 2016.
in ‘TAT IT UP’, GRUMPY BERT, Brooklyn. Jan 8 – Jan 31, 2016.

THAT BEING – SAID !!

I HOPE THE CAM show on LISA Y . . includes some of her newer paintigs , which includes some very far-out images, esp of ‘wizard / guys’ – that were featured in her most recent show at David Zwirner, that ran APRIL 23 – June 13, 2015.

check it out here: LISA YUSKAVAGE – DAVID ZWIRNER

in terms of the current street scene & yes, . . . even – bondage !!
these airy, fairy paintings of Yuskavage become even more relevant, and are super interesting, and more easily understood for their vivaciousness, and in fact, their TOTALITY: of content, narrative, context. yes: vision !! and painterly / formal issues — within a contrasting dialog, and a new scene of ‘illustrative’ . . pop art dreamers, painters & . . stickers !!

Go forth young collectors, and . . pick your magic !!
it’s out there, big time.
