~DUKE RILEY . . making waves

with PIGEONS !!

DUKE RILEY’S 2,000 strong pigeon army streaks through the Brooklyn night sky – scoring tons of positive press, from all sources, big & small.

DUKE-RILEY---WALL-STREET-JOURNAL-MAG,-MAY-2016

there’s a huge profile on the Duke in the MAY 2016 – WALL STREET JOURNAL MAGAZINE.
it comes shortly after the pages on the big LARRY GAGOSIAN profile, with its mention of Larry now repping (along with CANADA, and good-bye Gavin) . . the newest & youngest mega art star in the NYC-based constellation, JOE BRADLEY.

a word: tell me NYC – isn’t the center of the art world ? haha.

a word: URS FISCHER, now showing with both Gavin and Gagosian makes a telling quote in the same article . . .

“In any case, in recent years, there has been a tendency away from ‘monogamy’ in gallery relationships, as URS FISCHER puts it: You are not on a sports team,” says the (NYC-based) Swiss artist, who works with Gagosian internationally as well as with Gavin Brown, his original New York dealer.”

a word: this is just what it was like to live through the rapid rise & big $$ days of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring back in the late 1980s – early 90s. it was quite a rush, and nobody else mattered.

a word: does Duke Riley have a secondary market ? haha. (smiley face.)

I’ve probably got the best, most extensive, and most definite !! the earliest treasure trove of DUKE RILEY PHOTOGRAPHS.

here’s a few from the artlovers’ archive . . .

DUKE RILEY – ‘SEE YOU AT THE FINISH LINE’
NOV 1, 2013 – JAN 11, 2014
MAGNAN METZ GALERY, 521 W. 26th St, Chelsea, NYC.

it’s the opening night of his first major show to center solely on his pigeons, in which he sent them to smuggle cigars out of Cuba. equipped with little digital cameras to record their flight, from a birds-eye-view, (footage was screened in the show), each bird had a tiny backpack strapped on to their back – in which to carry the contraband.

a glimpse of one the large, pigeon-themed murals in the show. unlike his previous shows, these murals were not made of mosaic tiles, but were composed entirely of sea shells.

yep, guess one day, I’ll have to do . . a book.

~BASQUIAT: 16 ft wide 1982 painting . . goes for $57.3 Million / update THURS MAY 12

the blue chip market . . is insane !!
totally going overboard crazy – for the hippest of the art stars.

if that doesn’t say . . buy young art, then what does ?
you only need one to pop – to call it a big win.
having a good ‘eye’ – of course . . trumps all.

BASQUIAT-SELLS-FOR-$57.3-MILLION,-CHRISTIE'S,-MAY-10,-2016,-NYC
JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT (1960-1988), ‘Untitled’, 1982.
acrylic on canvas, 94 x 197 in.
PHOTO: CHRISTIE’S via THE WALL STREET JOURNAL – WED MAY 11, 2016.

“CHRISTIE’S can thank an anonymous Japanese telephone bidder for going on a shopping spree . . . Tuesday, (May 10, 2016). . . . The biggest prize for Paddle No. 1733 was an untitled, 16-foot wide Jean-Michel Basquiat painting (above) that sold for $57.3 million, (well) over its $40 million estimate. The price broke the artist’s previous auction record of $48.8 million set 6 years earlier with ‘Dustheads’ . . .

The (same) Japanese buyer also bought a $1.7 million BRUCE NAUMAN neon sign that said, “Eat War”, a $5.8 million red ALEXANDER CALDER , ‘Sumac 17’, and a $9.7 million RICHARD PRINCE ‘Runaway Nurse’ form 2005-2006.”

“The exuberance of this collector, and a smattering of others, gave the sale a lively atmosphere that overshadowed the fact that several other major offerings barely sold at all . . . works by ROBERT GOBER, JASPER JOHNS, JEFF KOONS and RUSCHA sold for below their asking prices.”

UP-DATE: THURS MAY 12, 2016 – 12:20 PM

the piece belonged to art dealer/Venus Over Manhattan NYC/LA gallerist . . ADAM LINDEMANN.
it was sold to . . Japanese online retailer YUSAKU MAEZAWA.

~CATTELAN’S ‘HITLER’ goes for $17.2 MILLION . . CHRISTIE’S

MAURIZIO CATTELAN’S . . . ‘HIM’ – HITLER ON HIS KNEES, WENT FOR $17.2 MILLION at a CHRISTIE’S CONTEMPORARY ART AUCTION, YESTERDAY – SUN MAY 8, 2016.

a sweet vindication for the few loudmouth dissenters, [and Cattelan, lol] . . including most notably myself, and RANDY KENNEDY – who were the very very few who wrote in favor of Cattelan’s superlatively brilliant, ‘hanging’ retrospective – which took place at the GUGGENHEIM, titled: ‘ALL’ . . in the winter of 2011.
and in which ‘HIM’ . . hung.

the leader of the downer pack was ROBERTA SMITH, who not only trashed the exhibit, but said something to the effect . . that it was a “career destroyer”.

I have just 3 words for Roberta Smith: RACHEL HARRISON, who ?

one of the best museum shows, ever !!
PHOTO: NANCY SMITH

you can read MY rant – in favor of it, here: ‘a rat’s ass’

~a rat’s ass . . .

of course.
I was an early supporter of Cattelan’s, I posted the FIRST mainstream photos of him – on artnet.
here are 2 other early ones, from way back, 2005 – when I was still using a 35mm camera.
Cattelan . . what a natural-born clown.
what a showman. but, also . . a ‘picturesque’ & prophetic voice – on the state of the world, as it has turned, sour.
no doubt.

these photos below were posted to artloversnewyork.com . . . right after I broke off from the mothership i.e. artnet, for holding me – back. lol, Walter Robinson bite your lip. he fired me. quelle joke. I “brought in too many unknown musician photos”.
name names ? lol, DEVENDRA BANHART. I kid you, not.

in fact, I just read in the Wall Street Journal, this very morning . . re the ROLLING STONES, that the secret to their success & maybe your’s too – is to “break from the anchor when it starts to drag you under”.
. . . no truer words, ever.
