These are the 2 paintings by MICHAEL WILLIAMS that CANADA sold for him, in their
booth at the first ever MILWAUKEE INTERNATIONAL ART FAIR, which ran from
October 20-21, 2006.
It’s rumored that Michael Williams will be given a one man show at CANADA to start off their FALL 2007 season.
more on the MILWAUKEE ART FAIR
RIGHT NOW:
You can see some of Michael Williams’ small paintings, in a really neat group show,
called ‘Goose Steppin’, along with work by JOE BRADLEY and EUNICE KIM, at atm Gallery.
What’s so interesting about the show is its extreme and airy, but totally abstract nature.
Even the Michael Williams paintings are very abstract.

KAREN KILIMNIK, b. 1955
Planning the Attack of Malta, the Mastermind, 2001
Waterbased oil paint on canvas in artist’s wooden frame with audio cassette, 20 x 16 ins.
Estimate: $350,000-450,000
sold for: $408,000 (includes buyer’s premium)
image scanned from:
PART I – CONTEMPORARY ART – AUCTION CATALOGUE
NOVEMBER 16, 2006 – NEW YORK
PHILLIPS de PURY & COMPANY
this is the Karen Kilimnik self-portrait that was referred to in the earlier
artlovers posting on .. ‘The Early Auction buzz is …”
This is the piece that was reported to have had a guaranteed seller’s tag of
half a million dollars. PHILLIPS de PURY confirmed the guarantee to the
seller, but declined to give the actual numbers.
We got the impression that the guaranteed tag was slightly less than the
buzz claimed, but NO !! – the rebounded buzz is that is was MORE !!
$650,000, to be exact. IF the piece was bought in 2001, this represents
a good profit, by the seller, if indeed, they were the original buyer,
because at that time, her prices did not exceed $30,000 – for the
top-of-the-line portraits.

the card for: RENE MAGRITTE – PAINTINGS
NOVEMBER 2 – NOVEMBER 22, 2006
VAN DE WEGHE FINE ART
521 WEST 23RD STREET, NEW YORK, NY
image: Rene Magritte, Le Pelerin, 1966, Oil on canvas,
31-7/8 x 25-5/8 inches
.. it occurs to this ‘art maven’ , having happened upon this excellent & currently running
exhibit of RENE MAGRITTE, that KAREN KILIMNIK’S work, investigates the same sublime
emotional
depths, as this classic 20th Century Belgian painter. Especially his late
work. To my mind this is what differentiates Karen’s work from ELIZABETH PEYTON’S,
with whom she is always compared to and grouped with.

the card for the first Milwaukee International Art Fair – organized by TYSON REEDER, SCOTT TYSON, JOHN RIEPENHOFF, and NICHOLAS FRANK.
The fair ran the weekend of October 20 & 21, 2006, and was located at the Polish Falcons Beer Hall, a “genuine, old-school Milwaukee institution”, (with the country’s fourth oldest functioning bowling alley in the basement !).
The fair was open to the public – admission was free. Various events were
organized around the event, such as guided bus tours of the city, a performance night,
a DJ dance-a-thon, a collage party and a panel discussion.
the buzz: it was really fun, and since it only cost $150 for a booth – everyone was really
happy, and in fact, some big collectors did come down from Chicago – so it wasn’t just a cool
and super hip party – it was a working weekend. word is circulating that Canada sold
2 of MICHAEL WILLIAMS’ small paintings. to see: images of the paintings
Canada has posted some really cool pix from the fair on their website:
The fair, staged at the POLISH FALCON, a kind of funky ‘insider’ venue, was located at
803 East Clarke Street, Milwaukee, WISCONSIN. some of the galleries participating:
Angstrom, Anonymous Gallery, Bas Fisher Invitational, Canada, Galeria Commercial,
Gavin Brown’s enterprise, General Store, Ghosts are Everywhere, the Green Gallery,
Hermetic, Hotcakes, Jacob Fabricius, Judy Monroe, Karma International, Little Cakes,
Locust Projects, Morgan Lehman, Ooga Booga, Other Gallery, Polvo, The Suburban,
Western Exhibitions, White Columns, Willy Wonka, ZieherSmith, & more ..
