The NEW YORK TIMES finally !! kicked in with some really relevant contemporary reviews this past FRIDAY, MARCH 7, 2008 – and included a KAREN ROSENBERG review of this show. Sadly, it is noted – that DAVID ASKEVOLD died this past January, and that the show was planned before his death. The show is described as including a series of paintings he made last year and a video from the 90s. Ms. Rosenberg also notes that David Askevold was “a founding member of the 1970s contemporary scene in Halifax, Nova Scotia. {CANADA!!} {whose} . . .better-known participants included the ur-conceptualists Lawrence Weiner, Dan Graham and Lucy Lippard.” She concludes with a description of his short video ’16 Candles’, and says: “this elegant, evocative piece bears comparison to the work of fellow Canadian Conceptualist, Rodney Graham, and suggests that a more comprehensive look at Mr. Askevold’s work is in order.”

JESSE PASCA – ‘My Heart as a Stock Market’
FEBRUARY 13 – MARCH 8, 2008
MEHR GALLERY (MIDTOWN)
436 W. 18TH STREET, CHELSEA – NYC

JESSE PASCA, ‘My Heart as a Stock Market’, 2000-2002, ink, colored pencil on paper, 18 x 12 ins./IMAGE COURTESY: MEHR GALLERY
This is a sweet, refreshingly light-hearted show that presents itself beautifully in the natural light of the gallery. No wonder it scored a neat little write-up (by Rachel Wolff) in the NEW YORK Magazine culture blog: VULTURE – Edited by Dan Kois & Lane Brown.
see: VULTURE POST/JESSE PASCA
A born New Yorker, JESSE PASCA continues to live and work out of NYC and Sag Harbor, NY. She received an MA with Honors in Art Education from City College of New York, and a BFA from SVA (School of Visual Arts, NY).
There are 8 drawings in the show. Four are based on horizontal grid tables, and the rest are vertical. we liked the vertical ones best – though looking back – we did really like this horizontal one, too.

JESSE PASCA, ‘A Certain Knowldege’, 2008, gouache, latex, ink, marker on w/c paper, 22 x 15 ins. ($2,500)
our super favorite was the ‘purple’ chart featured at the top of this post – because the alternating horizontal bands of purple and black gave a kinetic impression of ‘zipper’ folded paper.

detail, JESSE PASCA, ‘My Heart as a Stock Market’, 2000-2002, ink, colored pencil on paper, 18 x 12 ins. ($2,000)
too bad, the photograph can’t quite catch the optical illusion.
the left hand margin of the grid tables is in tiny handwritten ink script:

detail, JESSE PASCA, ‘My Heart as a Stock Market’, 2000-2002
another vertical ‘heart’ chart, we really liked:

JESSE PASCA, ‘If I Could Tell You I Would Let You Know’, 2008, pencil, gouache, latex, ink, marker on w/c paper, 15 x 22 ins.

detail, JESSE PASCA, ‘If I Could Tell You I Would Let You Know’

detail, JESSE PASCA, ‘If I Could tel You I V Would Let You Know’
. . . what can we say, looking back, the horizontal ones started to reveal themselves as pretty interesting, too.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Paris, FR
A LETTER FROM MAD VICKY:
Welcome to Vicky’s mansion!
Come enjoy the marvels and marvel over the joy.
I present to you one of the greatest artists of our time,
Prince Leif Ritchey. He will present his splendor on
the occasion of the First day of February in the year 2008
to christen MadVicky’s Gallery with friendly voodoo spawning fertilely
for years to come. I will serve you tea, MadVicky style.
Someone from Marriage Frere might spit it out directly in my
face but that’s ok– it will be far too creamy and
rich for their sophisticated dirty water taste.
After the exhibition the gallery will slowly morph
into a multifunctional art space where objects can be
sold and worn for an array of prices: hand made items,
dresses, antiques, cigarettes… a tiny music
store of my personal favorites including bootlegs
you can’t find anywhere else in the world.
Leif and Tooya will shop keep as the featured resident artists
for the first few months.

. . . LEIF & TOOYA are opening (to run for a couple of months) – a clothing store at MAD VICKY’S TEA GALLERY – 3 rue Nicolet, PARIS / 8eme – this week !!!
. . . if you don’t know who LEIF & TOOYA ARE – that’s too bad – because they are some of the coolest and most talented people in this city – going way back to ART FIEND FOUNDATION !! – yep – that’s ART FIEND FOUNDATION – !! on Ludlow Street on the Lower East Side. where they once ran an ‘indy’ clothing collective/store . . . where they sold their own handmade clothing/designs, and that of others, (notably LEILA HEKMAT), and also staged art exhibits and special musical performances – in the small storefront space.
Anybody, who has followed atm Gallery – has seen LEIF’S artwork in Bill’s earliest shows – way back on AVE B.
. . somewhere unravelled through – those earliest ART FIEND DAYS – lies early ties to DEVENDRA BANHART & COCO ROSIE, and, if, you don’t know who MAD VICKY is . . . if, you saw the COCO ROSIE concert/Bianca Casady LiL Girl Slim “Cosmic Willingness” – show at JEFFREY DEITCH last FALL, 2007 – well, then, you saw MAD VICKY aka BIANCA CASADY – 1/2 of COCO ROSIE – !!
see: the show’s poster/BIANCA CASADY/”COSMIC WILLINGNESS”
see: the show’s email invite/FROM: “RHASTA MAD VICKY LOPEZ”
and, if we want to evaluate exactly what this might translate into overseas – even from this far distance across the pond – I’d say – they have it all ‘sewn’ up – no pun intended. – why ?
two brief remarks – that are well documented facts:
1. KARL LAGERFIELD is a HUGE FAN of DEVENDRA’S – make your own conclusions.
2. didn’t you see it in the papers here, it got a lot of press – COCO ROSIE performed at the after-party – !! – for – PRADA – at the recent NYC FASHION WEEK 2008. . . . and PRADA and MUI MUI rule !!! well this season, anyway. (anybody see the new PAPER !!!)
you’ve got to check out their website – no kidding !!
see: mad vicky’s tea gallery.com
once there, make sure to hit:

DEYA RAMSDEN, ‘Cave Rabbits in Love’, fabric & sequin stitched/collage. IMAGE/COURTESY: BEEBOP GALLERY
Beebop Galley specializes in offering unknown artists their first solo shows in New York. This is the gallery’s 4th show.
DEYA RAMSDEN, recently relocated to BROOKLYN, from Oregon.
“Her eclectic and playful multi media works are united by a sense of experimentation. Using fabric, paper, plastic, clay and metal, Deya crochets, weaves and sews for us a fantastical world of both underwater and land walking creatures alongside of sculptures of environments in which these creatures might frolic . . .
. . . ‘Dome City’ is a paper sculpture made while “under the influence of the city” of New York, tiny drawings stacked upon each other with a blue inner glow at the center. Its protrusion from the wall pulls the viewer in to join the city and inspect the individuality of the drawings . . . and,
Deya has woven giant ‘Jellyfish’ in plastic, from plastic bags which float above, daring the viewer to play in the tentacles.
Born and raised in Virginia, Deya is a self-taught artist who has shown work at Nature in Charlottesville, Nocturnal and the Handmade Bazaar in Portland, as well as HaNnA Gallery in Tokyo.”

MOLLY McGARRITY, Frankie’s childhood pal. (they grew up in Pennsylvania) – if you’ve also noticed that MACY’S advertising graphics – have gone up at least 100 notches – she might be why. She’s the new Senior Art Director at MACY’S CORPORATE MARKETING DIVISION.

ANDY MEERON had work in th e ‘WU-TANG’ GOOGOLPLEX show at GBE’s Passerby…..

ANDY HERSHEY, who used to live at 234 HURON, with, COLIN LANGENUS (of USA IS A MONSTER) at the DEYA RAMSDEN opening.

at one point in the evening – NICK KUSZYK . . , or Sheeesh – as his solo musical project is called – played – in a set called . . ‘METEOR’.

COLIN LANGENUS – holds up ‘METEOR’ – the limited edition poster, NICK KUSZYK made to celebrate the evening, and which, in fact – caught the magic white heat – of the evening.

AJIT CHAUHAN – ‘STARING AT THE SUN’ – OPENS – SAT MARCH 1 – 7-9PM
the show runs: MARCH 1 – APRIL 5, 2008
JACK HANLEY GALLERY – 136 WATTS ST – TRIBECA – NYC
AJIT CHAUHAN’S – New York debut – this solo show will include video, installations and drawings.
“Ajit Chauhan’s drawings evoke the tradiitional imagery of his parents’ native India with a sharp contemporary edge. Intricate, richly detailed, and delicately drawn in black and sepia ink on recycled pages, his sketches of hesitant symmetry show the hand at work. While illustrating his belief in the necessity for imperfection to enter the artistic process, Chauhan creates works that defy the notion of completion.
“His films capture rural life in remote parts of India, where he traveled frequently and extensively. Departing from narrative-driven documentary form, Chau transforms his footage into an expressive compound, in which he superposes animated drawings and juxtaposes unusual scenes, from boats bulging with oddly shaped huts to stray dogs, to faces of the idle villagers.”

. . . we heard some buzz that . . this guy was supposedly “the inspiration” . . behind DEVENDRA BANHART’S drawings – but – here was nothing to indicate any connection or interesting tangent – such as this – on the press release.
. . . as well, supposedly there was some “beautiful music” – our source didn’t make clear if it was even live or not – though he seemed to have heard it was “Indian”. again, there was no mention – whatsoever – of any musical performance, or sound track, of any kind on the press release.
. . . very strangely, an opinion of how interesting the show itself – was – meaning the art – didn’t accompany the brief conversation.
