Memorial for RASHA SHAMOON
corner of DELANCEY & ALLEN, LOWER EAST SIDE, NYC. SUNDAY, NOV 2, 2008
while in the ‘hood for the ‘HOW TO PREDICT THE FUTURE’ presentation at LISA COOLEY,
we stumbled upon these remaining traces of the TIME’S UP NEW YORK – DAY OF THE DEAD – BIKE RIDE !!
BARBARA ROSS of TIME’S UP – was nice enough to fill us in on the details.
“Cyclists, zombified with white and black face paint and dressed in bright, festive colors, took to downtown
Manhattan for a 2 hr ride on Sunday, Nov 2nd. They rose the dead with loud cheers, “viva bicicletas” (live on bicycles), and “celebramos los muertos” (celebrate the dead), in addition to visiting sites of cyclists hit and killed
by cars and holding mock funerals.
Village environmental group, TIME’S UP! organized the Day of the Dead bike ride in order to promote safer streets and to remember and celebrate the cyclists BRANDIE BAILEY, RASHA SHAMOON, and BRAD WIILL and their community.
A garbage truck hit Bailey on Houston St at Ave A in 2005. Cyclists stopped first at her white ‘ghost’ bike memorial …. After a moving speech that ended with “let’s celebrate the dead and fight like hell for the living”,
cyclists cheered and danced to the Mexican music performed by former Blood, sweat and Tears trumpet player
LEW SOLOFF.
Next cyclists rode to where Shamoon was struck by a SUV at Delancey and the Bowery, this past summer, August 11, 2008. They held a ‘mock’ funeral in the divider of the intersection. Then they theatrically ‘died’ and were ‘buried’ under the wheels of a taxi parked in the Allen St. bike lane demonstrating the danger caused by motorists parked in the bike lanes.
The final celebration for the dead occurred at a community garden, where Will dedicated much of his activist effort when he wasn’t promoting bike riding. Cyclists ended their ride at St. Marks Church – where they made a public appeal to Mayor Bloomberg to join them in the quest for safer streets for all New Yorkers, who are often eager to get on their bikes, but are discouraged by unprotected, un-enforced bike lanes. They called for the city to honor its commitment to making the roads bike friendly and green.”

MELISSA BROWN, MELISSA SCHERRER, REVEREND LUKE MURPHY & CARLA EDWARDS:
invite you to a PERFORMANCE of – ‘HOW TO PREDICT THE FUTURE’ !! – TO-NITE !!
SUNDAY – NOVEMBER 2, 2008 – at 7 PM !!
LISA COOLEY FINE ART – 34 ORCHARD ST – BTWN HESTER + CANAL – LOWER EAST SIDE, NY
for more info, & artist statements, see: LISA COOLEY FINE ARTS/EVENTS
FOUR ARTISTS GIVE CONCISE PRESENTATIONS ON DISPARATE METHODS FOR PREDICTING THE FUTURE !!
well, it was an intriguing nite. give me mysticism over technology, or is it the other way, around ? any ole time.
in fact, what these 4 artists, tried to show, with their ‘visual aids’, i.e. projected self-made graphs, and extensive research, was that mysticism is just a small element, if that – in the science of their particular field of expertise . . .
we also got to see some of the ANDY COOLQUITT – ‘LIGHT’ – exhibit – currently up, at LISA COOLEY – until NOV 16. the show obviously being arranged to make room for the nite’s seating,
these sometimes eerie, often whimsical, but mostly light-handed and light-hearted !! alternative electric ‘lamps’ made for an especially inspired setting – for these off-the-radar ‘science of predicting the future’ mini-lectures !!

ANDY COOLQUITT ‘LIGHT’ IMAGE/COURTESY: LISA COOLEY FINE ART
ANDY COOLQUITT – ‘wink wink’, 2008, metal, wire, epoxy, lightbulbs. 74 x 77 x 5 in.

UP-DATE: WED NOV 5, 2008
PIX FROM THE PERFORMANCE & GLIMPSES OF ANDY COOLQUITT – ‘LIGHT’ !!

approaching LISA COOLEY FINE ART – an unmarked storefront on ORCHARD ST. between Hester and Canal – on the Lower East Side.

the Andy Coolquitt electric ‘light’ exhibit was re-arranged around the room – to make room for the nite’s
seating.

DAVID RAYMOND, film producer, collector, and board member of PERFORMA – just as the performance was about to begin – with LISA COOLEY.
DAVID RAYMOND is notably involved with the TONY STONE Indie feature – ‘SEVERED WAYS’ – ‘The Norse Discovery of America’, as Executive Producer. the film is set to be distributed by Magnolia.
see: ‘SEVERED WAYS’/official website

REVEREND LUKE MURPHY gave the first brief presentation.
His power point projection – based on graphs of his design – described “terms for the mathematical relation of anxiety to anxiety (past, present and future !!), the means to predict and anticipate anxiety and the conditions
for the reconciliation of anxiety with anxiety.” it was actually very humorous. . . as in, to wit – “it was the anxiety about anxiety in the future that first created anxiety in the past …”
note: the ANDY COOLQUITT ‘light’ in the background, and throughout – the following photos.

LUKE MURPHY on ‘predicting the future’ – through reflections on anxiety: past, presentand future..

MELISSA SCHERRER and THE ART OF THE TAROT – was up next.

everybody got a random card – artlovers’ was – THE HANGED MAN !! – how apt !!
and, so we were specifically told – to put all decisions on hold for 9 days. meaning NOV 11th.
how auspicious, so – look out for big changes on artlovers, NOV 11th. already under consideration.
(now my web master, and you know who you are, Reverend !! has a little breathing room.)

well. he is really supposed to be hanging upside down like this. but upright – you can see he really does have sunny radiant aspects, it’s not really a death card – its more of an hanging man, than a hanged man !!
and he is tied to the blooming tree, see the green leaves ? (of knowledge ? of life ? ) by a sturdy strip of leather, not just by a string – so we like that – !! – though, sometimes it feels awfully much like we are hanging by a string.
and maybe the upside down part, therefore then reads: as going against the grain – as in i-n-d-i-e.
sturdy independence.
we also see some positive in the fact that his hands are bound behind him. we see that he faces – what are the fruits of others’ labor – the art of others’ hands – not his own, and two, that whatever is making him hang upside down, instead of upright – is beyond his control. his hands are tied. fate. or society. being hampered by outside ignorance. He himself looks pretty poised and strong, yet about to leap into dance. and with light and warmth from the sun – behind his head !! his crazy thick curls morphed into the fire of the wood and the light of sun behind him – we’ll take it !!
FUTURE PREDICTION c/o MELISSA SHERRER – an auspicious – staying in the game – not, hanged man – out !! hanged man – in !! yo, aries !!
I guess this is what they call ‘relational art’ – in the more academic circles of fine art criticism !!

one of MELISSA SCHERRER’S charts !!

MELISSA SCHERRER

next up – MELISSA BROWN gave a very well researched lecture on coming up with the best numbers
to win the lottery !!

Melissa Brown’s research was very diverse and extensive. and her charts – charming !!

the ‘BROWN WHEEL’ of LOTTERY PREDICTION !!!

included among her research – this character – who prayed to the WICCAN gods to help him win, and if he did – he would open a store dedicated to all things Wiccan !! and, he did win, big time !! – and here he is, in the store !! His name is BUNKY BARTLETT, and he won the 4th largest payout in megamillions history.

MELISSA BROWN – well, combining all elements of her research for picking the hottest & luckiest and most randomly pure numbers – Melissa came up with a series of numbers for tonight’s (NOV 5, 2008) lottery drawing on Channel 7 at 11:21 PM, and offered members of the audience a chance to buy in – for $1 !! – did we join in – you bet !! so good luck – MELISSA BROWN & all her $1 Pool Drawing ticket holders – for to-night !!

well that was pretty entertaining. what’s up next & last.
CARLA EDWARDS scientific take on the meaning of the lines in your hands, that’s what – and she had everybody squinting at their palms in the dark !!

palm reader specialist – CARLA EDWARDS !!

the rapt ‘relational’ audience !!

gallerist LISA COOLEY with – ANDY COOLQUITT’S – ‘Old Spice’, 2008, metal, plastic, paper, 54 x 4 x 4 in.

LISA COOLEY enjoyed the nite’s presentations, as well.

as did, writer DILLON de GIVE !!

MELISSA SCHERRER also related – that through her tarot readings she had divined that this current year,
2008 – was all about ups and downs and emotions – whereas, the upcoming year, 2009 – will be
all about justice, as in pay-back !! the card for 2009 – is the WHEEL OF JUSTICE. if you did good and worked towards a goal – you will reap, if you did not – you will, cry !!

MELISSA SCHERRER, finally, or finally beginning – to be revealed . . .

an ANDY COOLQUITT light sculpture/lamp among the audience.
ANDY COOLQUITT – ‘wink wink’, 2008, metal, epoxy, lightbulbs, 74 x 66 x 5 in.
got to say – the lights are beautiful, very original – and extremely well crafted – but, the work isn’t exactly recession priced, or entry level stuff. who knows, maybe – you can cut a better deal ?
(it might even be cheap, in the world of high-end one-of-a-kind designer lamps ???)
for example – this one is priced at $5,600.

ANDY COOLQUITT, ‘hold on to me’, 2008, metal, epoxy, wire, lightbulbs. ($3,600)

ANDY COOLQUITT, ’21st century aggressive carpet growth’, 2008,
wood, carpet, metal, wire, lightbulbs, glass, 106 x 6 x 6 in.

ANDY COOLQUITT, ‘vipsx’, 2008, wood, metal, plastic, 115 x 5 x 5 in.

detail, the top of ‘vipsx’ by ANDY COOLQUITT

detail, the bottom of ‘vipsx’ by ANDY COOLQUITT !!

p.s. about ANDY COOLQUITT !!
here he is at the DARK FAIR, March 28, 2008, – with a rather typically partied-out, JOE GRILLO,
of DEARRAINDROP !! we first crossed paths with Mr. Coolquitt at the big DEARRAINDROP,
‘RIDDLE OF THE SPHINX’, Summer 2004 show – at DEITCH PROJECTS – where he gained an underground rep for being a (big !!) part of the artist crew – that helped DEARRAINDROP mount this major installation.

Posted in The Bomb | By Nancy Smith | November 2nd, 2008, 4:06pm

. . . speaking of starships and outer space – ANDREW SMITH, the American born, British author of: ‘MOONDUST: IN SEARCH OF THE MEN WHO FELL TO EARTH’ (2005) – a lively account of lunar landing legend and reality – based on interviews with the last 9 remaining (of 12) American astronauts to actually set foot on the moon – touched base in New York City last week – to interview the remaining crew – a few are no longer around !! – who touched base with dot.com legend JOSH HARRIS – when his JUPITER & PSEUDO megabucks – were funding a rockin’ and rollin’ maverick art party scene, here in NY F*CKING CITY – in the mid 80’s !! – culminating in that great granddaddy of dot.com megabuck art parties – QUIET – the 2 week MILLENNIUM live-in – 90 artist – 24/7 – bash – that took over downtown Broadway – and only stopped, when it was shut down by FEMA, the FIRE DEPT & the POLICE DEPT – all arriving – at the same time.

. . . speaking of moondust – that’s CAL’S death dust – also known as – cremated ashes – smeared on the door.
600 BROADWAY at PRINCE STREET – aka the gateway to SOHO, NYC – was the headquarters of PSEUDO, back in the day. And, there you could find Cal, big, and bigger attitude, as camo-punk encased, as a renegade US flag, an in-your-face punk with a bleached buzz cut – who did some of early alternative PSEUDO programming, and more importantly, acted as a 24/7 attached-to-the-hip entourage body-guard-of-hipsterdom – for Josh, himself. They were basically inseparable. where Josh went – there went Cal. As uncool and preppy as Josh was, and he was !! – esp in the beginning – Cal was the king of rebel street cred. his m.o. was: silence. Josh was the man, the visionary, the business whiz kid – the brains & bucks, as in mega bucks !! and Cal – was the cool, well he had the attitude, I guess better put: he had the street style – in fact, Josh obviously was, hands down x 1,000 – the cooler of the two – in all ways. but Cal made an indelible impression as part of the hipster entourage that surrounded Josh, and feed his legend – back in the day.
p.s. Josh wrote to say Cal did a Pseudo show called: ‘high weirdness’.

. . . don’t have the full details, on when or how he died – though it was something like a self-inflicted drug O.D. – not a car accident !! and it happened recently – but, it’s Andrew Smith’s scoop – he knows the down and dirty details – so, guess you’ll to just have to wait till his book comes out – on the best of the dot.com biggies – including to a great part – our JOSH HARRIS.
Those were the days, making $10,000 a week in the employ of Josh – to run a party – was not unheard of – in fact, it was the norm. But, back to CAL. Cal was a vampire. At night – he put on those porcelain fang tooth overlays and partied down hard. One could go to secret parties – the Vampires even had the first big blow-out New Year’s Eve 2000 pre-Party at QUIET – and see all kinds of NYC night life denizens, who during the daylight hours – you would see unloading party supplies, read: beer, and alcohol – or tending the Pseudo party bars – just like all the other ‘ordinary’ work-a-day NYC artist people – but, then they’d come out in their secret night life – dressed as hard core, as hard core gets – and all, men and women, vampires – with fangs in their mouth.
It was rumored that Cal was the leader of the pack. It was these vampire friends who must have smeared his ashes on the Pseudo door, and drew those magic symbols. Like a lot of us, Cal was crushed when the Pseudo days ground to a halt. He went up to stay with Josh a couple of times at the FARM – but it didn’t go too well. legend is they had a big blow-out, read fist fight – and Cal never returned. The necklace Josh had given to Cal, a grain of sand with his name inscribed in it – on a leather cord – which he had worn 24/7 from the beginning – was found discarded on the farmhouse floor.

. . . while touching base with the NYC art scene later that day – ANDREW SMITH was able to get in a few hardcore shows. He made the CONTAINER SHOW opening at new Lower East Side Gallery – ANONYMOUS. . . where he loved the work of ANTHONY LISTER, and . .

and GREG LAMARCHE !! – Andrew said he had been around the London art scene quite a bit – even having interviewed DAMIEN HIRST a while back – and seen some shows lately, but definitely – he had to admit – the NYC scene – had the edge !! He even got to meet live wire – MOMO !! whose tag & site specific work intrigued him greatly. if there ever was a earth walker – with a lunar mission mind-set – that would be MOMO.
ANDREW SMITH particularly was enthralled by: MOMO TAGS THE WIDTH of MANHATTAN !!
and, see: ANONYMOUS/CONTAINER SHOW !!

. . . then seriously switching gears – the same night – he was able to hit the last hour of the 3rd Annual
NY ART BOOK FAIR BENEFIT OPENING PARTY – where he encountered another live wire !! –
PHIL COTE – of Philly’s BOBO !!!

. . . and mission accomplished – scored a great souvenir gift to bring back home to his girlfriend – from his lightning quick foray into the wilds of the NYC – BIG APPLE art scene – a limited edition MELLISA BROWN ‘TABLOID’ deck ($30) – a great gift for the even more tabloid consumed BRITS than we are – but in particular for his girlfriend – who he firmly declared – would love it. more fun, MELISSA BROWN was on hand to play – a ‘TABLOID’ round – with him in person.
you have to make a tabloid headline out of the cards you are dealt – and his included a caricature of ROBERT DOWNEY’S GRANDMOTHER !! which practically knocked his Brit socks off – with delight !!
and, she signed the deck for him, too. she signs the joker !! how great. how do you beat that. you don’t.

ANDREW SMITH – ‘MOONDUST: IN SEARCH OF THE MEN WHO FELL TO EARTH’ (2005)
is out in a few different editions.
an early review by ROBIN McKIE in the OBSERVER, APRIL 24, 2005 is one of the best to touch base with.
it begins: “Nine astronauts who walked on the moon are still alive, but their clouds of glory have gone dark”
. . . and goes on to highlight this telling episode from Andrew’s book:
re: BUZZ ALDRIN – “he resents more not being the first man on the moon than he appreciates being the second (!!),
as a fellow astronaut (unnamed !!) observes – hence the absence of lunar pictures of ARMSTRONG – even when he was specifically requested, he refused to take a single snap of his commander, because he was ‘too busy.’ “!!
(remind anybody else, of Pseudo or QUIET … and, I thought it was just Josh setting us all up against one another – now it just turns out to be the nature of the competitive human beast.)

TUESDAY – OCT 28, 2008 – 11PM – 4AM !!
SANTOS PARTY HOUSE – 100 LAFAYETTE – LOWER MANHATTAN
FREE ADMISSION – BUT YA GOTTA BUY YOUR OWN DRINKS – & – SCOTT WANTS TO SEE YOU !! IN FULL COSTUME !!
LIVE PERFORMANCES BY: COME RAD COMRADE, BROTHER BRUNO, THA PUMPSTA, LIVING DAYS & POPULAR SCIENCE/featuring Tobel von Cartier.
DJs: TELFAR, MICHAEL MAGNAN, KINGDOM & FATIMA AL QADIRI.
SCOTT WRITES:
“join your fellow K48osmonauts at SANTOS as we escape the earth’s problems and celebrate the launch of K48: STARSHIP COUNTERFORCE, issue No. 7 – NYC’s most awesome artist’s fanzine. There will be music and dancing all night as we countdown the last minutes before take 0ff – put on your space suits and bring favorite aliens.
. . . in this issue, K48 explores space, science fiction and our race toward the future.
Our planet is dying. The world faces environmental and economic collapse, consumption continues at even faster rates and governments wage war to feed corporate greed and oil dependency… we feel more and more imprisoned by the forces of gravity and wish to breal free of our oxygen bubble — this spaceship Earth.
Today it’s hard to imagine what the future might look like.. one example that has inspired K48 from the start is George Lucas’ student film, THX 1138. In his film, which he calls “an artifact from the future”, what’s left of Earth is sedated and confined to living in a subterranean world under constant surveillance and where emotions are against the law. There’s no more love, only work to build a robotic police state and to consume — “buy more now”, and “be happy”.
We’re not that far off form Lucas’ vision. In the late 70s and through the mid 80s the pages of OMNI made the future seem glamorous. Today, however, in light of the very real and practical space station, deep space exploration and the search for other habitable planets has lost some of its magic. Nevertheless, the idea of space still resides in our culture as a means of hope and escape. The clean geometric constructions, spectral patterns, cosmic powers, and quantum physics associated with space let us turn away from our human problems and desires to imagine a world uncontaminated by our presence.
Excursions within the issue include photos by MARCO BOGGIO SELLA that bring news of the moon landing to a small West African village in Burkina Faso, a fashion spread of TELFAR CLEMEN’S 2008 ECO Society collection abstracted by JASON FARRER, prose by AMIR MOGHARABI theorizing the meaning of a last breath in The Cosmogony of Deceit, and an interview with KLAUS SCHULZE the father of electronic music by editor SCOTT HUG. The issue’s cover is a specially designed gold-embossed spacemetric construction by JONAH GROENEBOER and each issue comes with a sculpture of light produced by ANNE KOCH and a soundtrack CD compiled and mixed by SAMUEL KLOVENHOOF of led er est.
Special events include a preview exhibit at the 3rd annual New York Art Book fair, a launch party with band performances at SANTOS PARTY HOUSE, an exhibition at Rekord in OSLO, NORWAY, and a satellite launch party at the ACQUA HOTEL in MIAMI on December 5th.”

we caught SCOTT HUG at the recent 3rd annual NEW YORK ART BOOK FAIR.
He was in starship uniform & sending out a signal – . . . STARSHIP S.O.S – COME & GET ME OFF THIS PLACE !!
yep, K48 STARSHIP COUNTERFORCE has a futuristic golden cover !!
who knows – maybe it is . . . an outer space transmitter.
believe the book is self-published by SCOTT HUG & it retails for $20.
and yes, it comes with a tiny tiny tiny saber-like light sculpture !! – which does really work – and, which in turn, comes in its very own teany-tiny glassine envelope, kind of like your average notorious NYC dime baggie !! – but no, its good stuff – art !!
the tiny envelope says: “…in the beginning it is always dark”.

JOE BRADLEY – ‘Shmagoo Paintings’ – OPENS To-NITE – SAT OCT 25, 6-9 PM !!
the show runs: OCT 25 – DEC 3, 2008
CANADA – 55 CHRYSTIE ST – btwn HESTER & CANAL – CHINATOWN/L.E.S – NYC
this Joe’s second solo show at Canada – is that all – !! – so much has happened to this guy since then – he has shot up like a flame !!
this show comprises: work “drawn with grease pencil on white canvas – the boldness of the ‘one shot’ method is undermined by the absurdity of the subject matter: scrawls and doodles that move in and out figuration . . . They are a waste of time to try to understand and a pleasure to pursue. . . .
“For the past two and a half years, Mr. Bradley (!!!! love that, Mr. Bradley !!) has reconstituted monochromatic painting into a kind of composite building block. By combining stacks of brightly colored panels, Mr. Bradley made paintings that were simultaneously abstract and figurative.”
“I came across the word ‘Schmagoo’ in a book about New York City drug culture in the 1960’s, it was (is?) used as a slang for Heroin. This struck me as kind of funny, that a narcotic as deep and dark as Smack could end up with such a goofy nick name. Sounds like a Jewish super hero or something. The word stuck with me, and i began to think of ‘Schmagoo’ as short for hand for some sort of Cosmic Substance … Primordial Muck. The stuff that gave birth to everything. Base matter. The Bardo. in approaching this body of work, I have been thinking of Painting as a metaphor for the original creative act. The word made Flesh. The transmutation of Schmagoo into Alchemical Gold” – Joe Bradley

BLACK LABEL BIKE CLUB PRESENTS: the 6TH ANNUAL !! BIKE KILL – 2008 !!!
going-to-be-stormy – NYC weather – notwithstanding !!
SATURDAY – OCT 25, 2008 – starts at 2 PM
. . . & is guaranteed to get – increasingly wild, as the day progresses !! not sure, what will happen – if they are rained out !! know it will have to be a total storm to down these guys !! – but looks like that just, could be – it is getting – just as black outside, right now – as their graphics !!
WHERE ? – SANFORD St. & WILLOUGHBY AVE. in, where else !! B-R-O-O-K-L-Y-N !!!
these guys are among the rowdiest of the mutant bike clubs, that is – bikers that make their own mutant bikes, mostly tall bikes – but also trick bikes, tandem bikes, midget bikes & whatever, including jet bikes !! from discarded scraps & spare parts. Their riders are just about as mutant looking as their incredible bikes – street artist heroes, no matter how you cut out – straight outta MAD MAX !!

THE BLACK LABEL – BIKE KILL 2007 – POSTER !! PRETTY GREAT, or what !!
see all their posters on that myspace link, above !!
TOD SEELIE was at the 2008 Bike Kill – and posted a whole bunch of great photos & some commentary,
some a little depressing re: par-tay rip-offs, aka theives. there are always a certain low-down, the worst element that are always there to really crash & burn a wild, but otherwise good time. watch yer back.
we had tons of that at QUIET !! turned out to be the young super – feeding a big hungry H habit off our belongings. talk about biting the hand that feeds ya.
any-ways back to the pix – YES they are great !!
check them out: TOD SEELIE/SUCKA PANTS/ITS A HARD KNUCKLE TOWN !!
