gonna be a big street part-tay on WOOSTER ST – today – it’s also the sunset show for DEITCH PROJECTS !!
and, is that MAYDAY as in S.O.S. in distress – – for the world – I think so, at least for the GULF Of MEXICO !!
(as opposed to May Day – a celebration of Spring ? )
p.s. it was reported in the local paper – The Villager/April 28-May 4, 2010 issue – that “assaults” were being attempted on the ‘wall’ – FAIREY and his crew just put up on the DEITCH sponsored tag wall on the corner of Houston and the Bowery. “Last week, a mad tagger (!!) managed to throw up a partial scrawl on the new artwork, only to be grabbed by a beefy, albeit slow moving, security guard. The tagger evaded the guard’s clutches by wriggling out of his T-shirt, also leaving behind his cap and spray paint can. On Monday, another vandal (!!) dispensing with paint altogether, heaved a grapefruit-sized rock through the sheetrock-like panel that the piece is on, leaving a hole. He or she was apparently aiming for a bull’s eye on the artwork, but missed.” The Villager’s ‘SCOOPY’ then goes to say: “Word on the street is that because Fairey committed the sin of actually attending Rhode Island School of Design, some graffiti artists might not respect his work as ‘authentic’.” . . . yo. might have more to do with – how does someone who made his rep and big big pile of dough as a street ‘vandal’ himself – put up a stance that does not allow other street ‘vandals’ from climbing on that big bad bandwagon to sky-high success themselves – by hopping on board. literally.
WATCH OUT SHEPARD FAIREY !! invoking the spirit of that biggest tagger-in-the sky – JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT – king of the never sold-outs – might just backfire on ya !! plus the poster image above doesn’t even really look like Jean Michel, except for maybe the hair – what’s up with that, not using other people’s (media) photos – as the basis for your iconic images – anymore ? guess, that’s what happens when ya get too big. you can can only burn so bright – before the flame turns around and bites you right back !!
no judgment here. just bringing the issues to the table as they play-out. a lot of people told me they don’t like that Bowery wall – cause its “played-out” – personally I don’t think so. I think its great.
esp the stencil work.
if you look closely at that poster above – you can detect some of that subtle stencil work – esp the triangle of concentric ‘curves’ – that’s a key ‘element’ in archival American quilting – a pattern widely used on colonial era quilt border patterns.
ON SECOND THOUGHT: throwing a rock through tag work doesn’t sound like the M.O. of any street artist I know . . . sounds more like a radical politico – to me – like, maybe even a disgruntled early OBAMA supporter ?
and, re that GULF OF MEXICO OIL SPILL – I don’t think – they have – a PLAN B !!!
its hard to believe – but could an off-shore oil rig – be as jerry-rigged as this little Indie art world website !!??
talk about ruining the neighborhood – (on what EARTH DAY weekend ??!!) – gives new meaning to that good ole American expression:
there goes the hood – when the black(s) move in !!!!
as for SHEPARD FAIREY himself – a big supporter of OBAMA for CHANGE = HOPE – he is down on record in that same VILLAGER article – paraphrased as such: “Fairey has been underwhelmed with Obama, so far too, feeling he hasn’t delivered on promised change enough”.
in case you are just joining us, Fairey created that iconic “HOPE” poster – based on someone’s else’s photo, bye the way. the world isn’t just going down – its going down, fast & mighty complex ironic.
SHEPARD FAIREY – ‘MAYDAY’ – OPENING TO-DAY – SAT MAY 1 / 6-9 PM
the show runs MAY 1 – 29, 2010
DEITCH PROJECTS – 18 WOOSTER ST – SOHO – NYC

SHEPARD FAIREY puts up his (legit-DEITCH SPONSORED) activist ‘street’ mural – “It’s about climate change” – Fairey. Houston and the Bowery, NYC. APRIL 22, 2010.

the stencils were cut from heavy gauge cardboard.

the mural had an ‘activist’ – calling.

can you pick up the stencil work – its coloring was very subtle – totally 100% right on.

this is an early and pivotal American quilt pattern – esp used on quilt borders – dating way back to colonial times.

stenciling itself is an early American folk art – used to decorate the walls of early colonial and pioneer homes by itinerant craftsmen. They applied the stencil designs with stubby brushes. modern times – it’s done with spray paint !! talk about the advances !! of 200 years of relentless technology, not to mention American ingenuity !!

the ‘quilt’ pattern was also painted onto the wall – in several places, as well.

using traditional American pattern elements – is one of the keys as to how Fairey was able to use re-cycled 1950 Communist era Eastern European political poster art, esp its graphic composition and color schemes – to resonate with such an American feel . . .

the mural ‘s formal title is just, a little cheezy, no ?
‘These parties disgust me’ – but hey, its hard to nail things down, esp when you wish some old school – B BOYS – as in Break Boys – were calling the shots. cut to the chase guys. let’s see what HOMELAND SECURITY & FEMA’s – made of now !!
played-out ? sold-out ? commercial ? it’s still a mural with a message – that tries to deal with what’s going down, and I mean d-o-w-n with the world, and America, in particular today. as well as what’s good about, esp America: and that’s numero one – free speech. and is a testament to the huge art/pop culture that is still alive and kicking in NYC – the cutting edge of the global art world – still. the chance that street artists, art schooled or not – who cares – can make it big, starting with Jean Michel (SAMO) – is sweet no matter how ya cut it. and the sweet revival & ever-resonating rich heritage of American ‘folk’ art, really pop !! as in popular art – going back to days one is right on the mark !! culture and controversy are actually quite a dynamic duo – that gets the art discussion back into the common lowest denominator !! no doubt. as Deitch’s final flame-out – congrats, Jeffery D. we’ll miss ya. despite what I said on my frozen home page – there ya go, karma will come back and bite ya – every time. well he is brilliant – but a bit autistic, socially I guess. but looking back, I realize in a way that – that was a big part of the fun about Jeffrey. though he was kinda clueless in many ways – he put on some great shows. name my favs? BARRY McGEE, CLAIRE ROJAS, ARA PETERSON & JIM DRAIN. the COCOROSIE PERFORMANCE. DASH SNOW & DAN COLEN – NEST. BEN JONES – THE NEW DARK AGE. MICHEL GONDRY – BE KIND REWIND !!

JASON GRUNWALD & EASTERN DISTRICT – are throwing a big closing bash for his dyno-mite show – to-nite – THURS APRIL 29 – from 7-11 PM – !! featuring a s-l-i-c-k . . . “sick lineup of bands including the Brooklyn noise duo Sisters, underground Iranian rockers The Yellow Dogs, and the electro-garage rock band Electric People !!!”
FREE SHOW + FREE DRINKS
the actual show – JASON GRUNWALD: ‘Was It All A Dream’ actually runs thru this SUN MAY 2, 2010.
the show is a multi-medium mini-retrospective for this artist – who is mostly known for his illustrative music world posters, for bands such as the COACH WHIPS, SONIC YOUTH & DEVENDRA BANHART. There are large oil paintings on canvas – esp one that seems to be a complicated and detailed rendition of his studio at home – full of the art – now seen on the walls, here !! also included are some charcoal and pencil drawings and studies as well as some free-standing sculptural assemblages. personally I like his 2-D stuff, best. both the paintings and drawings, as well as the more formal band posters.
you can see a nice, brief range of his artwork here – on his website.

JASON GRUNWALD at the show’s opening reception.
‘Was it all just a dream’ – EASTERN DISTRICT / BROOKLYN / APRIL 16 – MAY 2, 2010

there was a huge array of (diverse) work in the relatively small space – it almost had an ‘outsider’ feel.

a poster for DEVENDRA BANHART & his sidekicks – HAIRY FAIRY.

it was like a collage, but of real art, not as in: found images – and had a nice rough-style, ‘let’s rumble’ edge.

the calligraphy was cool, too.
“in the future no one will be famous”.

LOL for sure. POSTER BOY kept his niche on the wall !!
and, what about BROOKLYN POSTER BOY – will he be – famous ?
got great great super great pix of that immediately previous show – but artlovers had just admin PHP busted – aka blown apart – so when the site gets back to 100% – will be sure to post them . . . pronto.
including lyrical assemblage tag work by NohJColey, photos of green shaped trees by LUCAS McGOWEN, that I totally loved, some terrific large scale photo wall murals by JIM KIERNAN, a big painting by JUAN DOE and this small green mo-hawked portrait – painted right on the wall by a certain BROOKLYN POSTER BOY – who it seems, can also – paint !! as well as he can cut, tear & re-arrange !! with new message, and usually pretty scary, too. dude.

BEN FURGAL wrote to tell me – our friend DAN ASHER – passed on to another realm – early early am – this past Saturday, April 24, 2010. Born in Cleveland, Ohio on DEC 31st, 1947 – that would make him 62. He seems to have posted quite a few videos, esp his music videos – to YouTube – his web tag: alienrib777.
yeah, Dan died on Earth Day. just by the skin of his teeth.

GBE posted a really nice one on their website !!

check it out, it’s scanned off YouTube: – YouTube !!/DAN ASHER/PHOSPHORESCENT !!
it’s a music video for: Phosphorescent – ‘Pictures of Our Torn Up Praise’ – recorded live @ BELL HOUSE, Gowanus, BROOKLYN, Feb 2009 – and posted to YouTube – May 11, 1009.

the footage was shot mostly in Brooklyn, in places like Coney Island, Red Hook, and Gowanus, but there is also a GIRAFFE sequence (that seems to come by way of Gavin Turk) that hails from – Antwerp, Belgium.
(yeah, watch it.)

FILE UNDER: RABBIT TAUGHT EAGLE – WENT FOR PARE, AND ALSO CAUGHT – WOLFY !!
. . . when you are out and about on the LOWER EAST SIDE on SATURDAY or even SUNDAY !! – you can catch a SECRET GOLDEN FLOWER !! of a show at the new PARTICIPANT location – also on East HOUSTON, 253 EAST HOUSTON, just east of Essex.
HRS: WED-SUN/noon-7 PM
‘That’s When the Rabbit Taught the Eagle a Lesson With a Smith & Wesson’
an installation based on a new limited edition artist book – curated and installed by JASPER SEBASTIAN STURUP.
the book features the work of 5 artists – each of whom got 25 pages:
MIKE PARE – BARRY McGEE – JASPER SEBASTIAN STURUP – KRISTOFER HULTENBERG – D-L ALVAREZ
the show runs thru MAY 2, 2010.

wow. they put some kind of large-scale gold foil paper – over what looks to be raw brick walls !!

the installation reminded me of the ROBERT CRUMB show in that all the pages of the book – were on display – in a beautiful room !! – but here – they were all arrayed in the display case – tables – and the gold foil reflected off the glass surface most magically – while enwrapping the whole room – in a soft warm coppery glow.
between the beautiful array of artist pages, the book format itself, and the golden wall – it was like the Golden Secret Flower had come to life and re-incarnated in newly trantic – NYC !!

or else – it was like being in one hell – of a big gold foil origami flower !!
this is JASPER SEBASTIAN STURUP – the artist behind the book and the installation.
he is also one the 5 artists whose work is ‘sampled’ – in the book.

it was – MIKE PARE who invited me to the opening. He came in from NEW MEXICO – where he and MELISSA SCHERRER, have recently re-located from Brooklyn. I am mad crazy for his work – and this opening reminded me of a Studio Visit – I did with him last year – when he was in a residency on Long Island.
I promise – I swear on my life – if my site ever gets back up and running – that will be the next – STUDIO VISIT – to go live !!

remember these decks – from Mike Pare’s show a few years back at BILL BRADY’S ATM ? they were so ahead of their time – they flew right over some people’s ‘critical’ heads !! but they land just right again, like a cat – in a newly Tantric NYC !! well. they always landed just right for me.

like-wise for all his charcoal, or is that pencil drawings !! it might be graphite. the nudes as well as the …

as the Navajo blanket inspired drawings – speak many tongues. so much so, they are almost golden secret mandalas – themselves, if you wanna push it, and I do.

this is, I guess Mike’s portrait of Melissa Scherrer. Mike told me they have also had their first child, a little girl named Maeve Winona !! ” . . . she was born October 16, 2009 in Albuquerque. She’s a total Libra an loves pedal steel guitar music and the Beatles White Album. She’s a new New Mexican.” !! an artist as well, Mellisa Scherrer has a certain rep in NYC among many – as – the Tarot card reader supreme.

WOLFY and friend – musician ANDREW DEUTSCH – actually this is where I met Wolfy and he told me about his EUCHARIST ZOMBIE SCREENING !! this upcoming Sunday in Brooklyn – at MONSTER ISLAND in Williamsburg.

WOLFY & KAYROCK – made a great silk screen poster for the event.

“JESUS SAID THAT/HE DID”.

SHEPARD says its about: “Climate change.”

they were just putting on the final details, the spray painted stencil designs – in hardly registerable, finely low-contrast colors – when I passed by yesterday afternoon, Thurs April 22.

the larger segments are ‘wallpaper’ pieces brought in already printed format – from his studio base in Florida.

UP-DATE: DAN ASHER left this planet – hopefully for further adventures – this past Sat April April 24, 2010 – in the very early morning hrs. bye Dan – will definitely miss you.
SIMON CERIGO reports that artist and photographer DAN ASHER is on his death bed. CHRIS from OTHER MUSIC told him. apparently Dan was alive last night – just barely and heavily medicated. Chris went to visit him in the hospital – last night – but nobody’s sure about to-night. It’s just down to days. maybe hours. Simon says: he might be dead by tomorrow. Dan is finally losing a long slow battle with lymphatic cancer – which he had had for many years, but which just sped up and snowballed on him recently. He was a real live wire, but no more. His body is still just just hanging in there . . . just long enough it seems for friends to go say good bye.
though as of Thursday afternoon, April 22, it is said that he is no longer lucid.
GAVIN BROWN gave DAN a special 2 week fund-raiser exhibit of his 1970’s BOB MARLEY photos – just last month.

DAN is also known for his small squiggly minimalist pencil line drawings, his pre-sentient late 90’s photos of icebergs in the Antarctic, his photo portraits of extreme wrestling in rural America, and his ‘quirky’ character.

a younger DAN ASHER – in NOVEMBER 1985 – at the inaugural opening, a group show which he was in, along with myself, Walter Robinson and Michael McClard – at Simon’s short-lived venture – SIMON CERIGO GALLERY, 202 AVE A, back in the day when the Lower East Side – really was, that.

p.s. don’t take my ‘flipness’ to mean – I’m not sad. I am. I’ve known Dan since I first arrived in New York in 1982. I even worked as an assistant to him – for a couple of years – when he went to & returned from the Antarctic with many many rolls of pix. He was hardwired very tight and was difficult to deal with. short temper. big chip on his shoulder. but very very talented and deserved way more success then he ever got. I’ve always been a huge supporter of his work – and I was really happy to hear Gavin had given him a show last month. they had crossed paths before, but Dan was very high maintenance. contrarian and temperamental. very self-absorbed, as they say. in a way he had to be, like we all do – to survive as full time artists, in this hard-edged town. but it was particularly hard for him tame his passions and relentless energy – but look what great quests he set himself out upon. Gavin put on a wonderful show for Dan at Passerby, a few years back. I covered it on artlovers – but alas the archives are (temporarily) broke. my only feeling now, is that he will find some rest in the next world, and if there is reincarnation – you can bet he is coming back . . . (!!?) I know he knew the value of his work – it’s the rest of you guys – that caused him such great frustration. what a tantric month – this is turning out to be. esp for NYC.
POSTED BY NANCY SMITH – WED APRIL 21, 2010 – 9:33 PM

DAN ASHER came by my show at OTHER MUSIC last year – just about this time !! he brought me the most beautiful flowers – just a few – but very exotic ones. that’s KANA TOGASHI, my daughter Kate’s friend on the right. I think Kate took the photo. Dan and I had grown distant over the recent months – well, it’s a tough game, NYC. life is fragile. friendship is fragile. even websites are fragile. Dan leaves behind a wonderful legacy – a beautiful poetic spiritual body of work – bottomline: that’s something to celebrate, in my opinion.
