~SHROOM SHOW . . HELPER . . . !!!!!!!

‘SHROOM SHOW’, HELPER . . . LIVES UP TO – IT’S NAME !!
LORDY, Lordy, help is on the way.

of course, things are very hard here in NYC, where something like 9/10 people voted for Hillary. Hillary might not have been their first choice, but anything . . trumps the Trump. all I need is to wake up and see Rudolph Giuliani’s ugly mug – in the morning papers alongside Trump – and I feel REPRESSION burn into my consciousness, just as if I’m a cowboy robot . . on WEST WORLD.

so funny . . how that works.

just when NYC is plunged into fear, depression and loathing, the greatest ‘alternative’ indie show pops up, at the small HELPER GALLERY in Brooklyn, Prospect Park/Lefferts Gardens hood.
innovative, creative, profound. and well produced.
it’s visionary, visual, wide open to interpretation, spiritual, organic and . . well, magic.

it’s also very ironic, to come upon this ‘huge world of mushrooms’ . . . in a postage stamp of a gallery. the show, which focuses just as much on the ancient & new age foraging, and growing of mushrooms, as it does on the folklore and spiritual quest / magic mushroom vision . . is also rather picturesquely . . right around the corner from entire blocks, and I do mean blocks of Born Again / Holly Roller Storefronts. it feels like what Harlem is supposed to be, or was.
and then, just immediately beyond . . the waves & waves of Brooklyn-ensconced Hascids !!
talk about a spiritual urban ‘sweet’ spot, or what !!

the show was organized by . . NICHOLAS MOENICH,
whose name came up just recently with the WON EH alternative, ‘doemestic’ & very indie . . gallery/residency presentation of ANDRES LARACUENTE / ‘Seasonal Year’ . . in the Brooklyn home he shares with LAUREN CLAY.

amazing, multi-layered exhibit & concept . .
tons of talent. every piece is mind-stopping, and that’s not an exaggeration.
the last group show that grabbed my heart, soul & mind like that. and squeezed them together into a higher consciousness, must have been the New Years Eve 2014 / SEAN VEGEZZI, ANDREW KATZ & ABELINE COHEN curated & produced ’15 WARREN St’ that popped up, literally . . in downtown Tribeca. a whirling, hard-core & hard-driven . . alternative curatorial project, that hit its mark, double time.
except, while that show’s supreme charm was in it’s huge, raw, abandoned building ‘venue’, unconventional free-fall / de-constructed presentation . .
SHROOM is every bit as dynamic, but just . . very well laid-out, precise.

just like, well . . a garden.

~ETHEREAL . . . PAPER CUT-OUT BANNERS / NANCY SMITH, Lower East Side. 90s.

I liked the word . . ‘ethereal’ that jumped up & about that previous pumpkin carving post, implied & directly.
so much of my own art was, and is . . ‘ethereal’.
and plus: this is my #current #dark #mood.

~PUMPKINS . . time to hunker down on the DIY, the alternative & . . the SKILLS

in times like these – all you can do is hunker down.
double down on the creativity, the freedom of expression, the smart, the alternative, and the . . skills.
turn the dial, way up . . . to to o-r-g-a-n-i-c.
as in . . of the Mother Earth – and stay there.
as in: Pumpkins, Pigeons, and . . mushrooms.

what !! you haven’t heard about the amazing . . ‘Shroom’ show, now up at HELPER ?
coming up next !!!!

I mean, did anybody else notice a DIY / Woodstock era kind of thing, revival in pumpkin carving – this past Halloween ?
not joking, there’s hope in these old ways. that burn brighter – today / next generation . . . rising.

klaus-nomi-halloween-pumpkin
first up, was this gorgeous spooky hand-carved, ‘lit’ . . pumpkin by KLAUS NOMI, posted by JEFFREY TRANCHELL.
it really pushed the limits of the traditional carved Halloween – Jack O’lantern – that we were all used to, you know you cut in a couple of triangle eyes and a big crooked grin . . but it sure jumped the gate.
it looked like ‘Biggie’ to one commentator. to me it looked like . . OBEY GIANT.
the negative spaces on the sides were . . . super fab, unique & dramatic.
OBEY PUMPKIN ????

moma-halloween-pumpkin-2016
then @katecerigo hooked me up with this MoMA / Museum of Modern Art beauty !!
@themusuemofmodernart: Loving this year’s #Halloween pumpkin !
An interpretation of Pablo Picasso’s ‘Les Demoiselles d’Avignon’ – Thank you @maniacpumpkins.

that was my first sense of . . pumpkin art gone 3_D – or, the next step.
shallow relief carving !!

and, then in came DANIELLE DE JESUS, you k-n-o-w . . .
the miniature ‘pop’ portrait painter – on the $1 bills !! at GRUMPY BERT.
yeah. that DANIELLE !!

Anyway, here is my attempt at Yoda.
Can’t wait to get better at it and – learn from my bros at @manicpumpkins . . .

“SEPTEMBER 22nd 2016

sad reality sinking in. Election season. Contemporary, always temporary. blowing in the fall, all autumnal wind.
Mysteries in the golden light . . .

My spirit flows with magic, adventure, courage, and mystery. Halloween hasn’t passed but it will.
temporal presence is defined in these paintings.
This exhibition is about contemporary states and a permanent temporary. Seasonal art, in an anxious time.”
