now HELD OVER . . at the FILM FORUM, NYC
actually. there is ONE SPECTACULAR art event happening in NYC, and that’s this film about the take-over of the legendary House of Dior – by RAF SIMONS. an absolutely superlative effort – on all levels, which makes it an artist’s film – no matter what your genre or field. or interest in haute fashion, for that matter. it’s about the creative process, the vision, the drive, co-ordinating teams of SKILLED ARTISANS, making the media buzz, keeping your backers happy, in a word: making the big dream – happen !!
but beyond that general creative endorsement, it is also a film about art, how art . . ‘travels’. just as we might peruse the tabloids or the fashions pages for a mental break, RAF looks to art to get his juices flowing. his 3 favorite artists at the time of this film: STERLING RUBY, GERHARD RICHTER,and JEFF KOONS.
RAF takes the time to introduce us to the drip paintings of GERHARD RICHTER, and more intensely to the recent spray paint on big canvas, all-over almost monochrome, very very moody, stormy ‘fields’ of STERLING RUBY, which he right then and there decides to custom create as a fabric for some of his floaty, but reined-in ballgowns for this his first Dior showing. and he’s got like 8 weeks to pull it all together !!
so we get to see the Sterling Ruby inspiration, hitting his mindset like a lightning bolt. we get to witness a big creative leap of faith. a big big leap of faith, and we become part of the background pressure put upon the atelier, the artisans, mostly women in white lab coats – who have to make the idea come to life, have to make the Sterling Rubies transition from painted canvas to printed fabric, and yes – they come out fab. everyone is surprised and pleased.
the Jeff Koons – connection ?
all Raf does, is talk talk talk about the JEFF KOONS flower puppy – pronouncing it “POP-IE” really really fast, so cute. “have we seen it” . . yes we have !! (in photos)
then when he is flown over to see M. Dior’s fab fab old school estate, he sees the gorgeous flower gardens and he decides that, with that in mind – and the Jeff Koons “POP-IE” he is going to rent a huge old mansion and fill it with solid walls of fresh blooms, for the runway show – and yes he does. He must emptied out flower markets all over Europe, let alone France. spectacular. gorgeous, oh my god.
so anyways, if you know your art 101 – you know PETER BRANT owns this flower puppy and he has it displayed on the grounds of his home / foundation in Connecticut. I read online he spends $75,000 a year to maintain it and keep it blooming with live flowers. imagine if he lived in LA ?
he’d have to have it covered in horny succulents !!
so, who do I see in line to see the next showing of ‘DIOR and I’ just as I was leaving ?

I couldn’t help wondering how cool it must be to watch the movie and know you owned that piece – amazing.
just ask him, if you happen to see him, out and about. he saw me. I was going to take out my camera and get in his face – but I just really really didn’t want to break the spell of a . . magic NYC moment.

RAKU: The Cosmos in a Tea Bowl

of course, as soon as I start TRASH-TALKIN’ LA / LOS ANGELES !!
there’s where I want to be !!
there’s two shows going on down there, that I would totally, totally love to see.
the first . . is a museum show on Raku pottery, the history of, and the unique design qualities of. in other words, magic, science, craft, form, function, design & ritual – all the things we’ve been talking about – in a nutshell / tea bowl. (More about the second – next week.)
with the current fascination here in NYC on anything artisanal, but esp fashioned by hand from clay, porcelain, you name it . . you’d also have this in-depth article on the show, appearing in the Wall Street Journal, back in April 23, 2015 – at top of your desk, for weeks. too. well, if you are LUCKY !! enough to be in drought-land USA, LA !! – you have just a few more weeks to catch it.
and why isn’t this show – coming here ?
that’s why most everybody, I know at least, is bitching about the museum scene.
just because you come from an institutional mind-set, does that mean you have to be so out of touch with the beat of the city, and more importantly its trending, beating heart ?
the last museum show I saw with glee – was the JACK GOLDSTEIN retrospective at the The Jewish Museum, and that was quite awhile ago, about 2 years to the day actually. that’s not a very good statistic for such a with-it, arts-loving city with many many museums, and even many many more always hungry culture vultures !!
but esp the ones loving anything – clay !!

she was notorious at one point for sweeping up the youngest, barely in his teens, baby brother member of DEARRAINDROP – into the folds of her ample bosom, and ROB PRUITT should be notorious for ripping off her upside-down legs sculptures, concrete-stuffed real blue denim jeans.

KITTY was also wearing a great cut-out ‘quilt’ pieced dress, that looked a bit like a KELIE BOWMAN silk screen, cut-out & re-patterned stitched painting. though the dress was subtle it was wild, it had sheer panels, in all the right places. she looked like she was born into it, it fit her so well. it was knock-out gorgeous, if you really stopped to look – kind of thing.
an earlier Duke Riley tattoo, on the under-side of that fair Irish arm !!

I first wrote up this young Philippine artist, when the Owen James Gallery participated in JUSTMAD6 – at the Madrid, SPAIN Contemporary Art Fair, just a scant couple of months ago, Feb 24-March 1, 2015. I had some fun knocking her work up against . . some new paintings by TAYLOR McKIMENS, and you know what ?
she held her – own !!
I like the title of her show . . ‘NON MINT COPY’ – !!
so fun, to consider vs. MAMIKO OTSUBO’S (CE!) – ‘COPY EXACTLY!’
which opened 2 weekends ago at CLEOPATRA’S.

both artists are looking at the pop culture here, in the USA.
both are referencing . . ‘geography’, both are doing photo-based collage.
and both have: a totally – different . . game plan !!
I would even venture to go out on a limb, and say that . . Mamiko has a kinder eye upon us, but maybe not so much – on the future.
life, sure is one hard nut to crack. and there are many, many, many different stories.
it’s also interesting to connect with Dina Gadia’s work, after just coming off of . . LALA LAND – the incredible-in-your-face, LALA ALBERT – !!
someone else can write the essay – I’m just laying it down pictorially.
it’s a very visceral, visual juxtaposition of ‘worlds’, different artist’s ‘points of view’ – and, life experiences. including socio-economic. global, etc.
but it’s all girl . . all ‘femme’- any way you break it down, and, don’t you ever forget that.
there’s power in them, that . . question & provoke, and they both do – just that.
though of course one is free-hand drawing (LALA) and one is composing collage (Dina) – both are: ‘talking’.
telling stories and questioning the ways – things are.
