THERE’S AN INTERESTING (AS IN VERY INTERESTING) SIDE STORY TO ‘KEN PARK’ & THE LONDON FILM FESTIVAL – LARRY CLARK CLOCKED HIS UK DISTRIBUTOR . . . BROKE HIS NOSE . . ALLEGEDLY OVER 9/11 . . THE UK DISTRIBUTOR NEEDLESS TO SAY, SEVERED ALL TIES TO THE FILM – & -WITHOUT A DISTRIBUTOR IT WAS PULLED FROM THE FESTIVAL !!
“I’m sorry I lost control and acted in an uncivilized manner, ” says Clark in a signed statement to
(BBC) COLLECTIVE . . .”But if he was trying to provoke me, he did. He went to the hospital with a broken nose, and I went to jail.” He was later released with a caution. the story was written by JONATHAN CARTER, on BBC COLLECTIVE (NOV 2002)

blown away # 1
the front graphic on the show’s invite – a 3 part fold-over card

blown away 2
the 21 artists in the show

blown away 3
the only illustrations of art included in the show – 2 images by MICHAEL BELL-SMITH, from his ‘Action Hack’, single channel video loops. 2007 – are of a purely visual/plastic ‘explosive’ nature.

“This exhibit features work in a variety of media by artists who address the character, meaning, and implications of explosions – from the intensity of an impending event to the sensation of the release and the reverberations of the ensuing shock waves.” – PRESS RELEASE

are they kidding – are they being just ‘super’ casual – as in, museum ‘hyper academic flat’ speak – do they mean solely plastic “artistic explosions” – is there any political content. I mean explosions can kill – it isn’t exactly that pretty a topic as they make out – and, there’s nothing as yet – to give any indication on the website.
The only illustrations on the card are of ‘plastic’ / purely visual “explosions” by MICHAEL BELL-SMITH. That is definitely worth seeing, don’t get me wrong – its just the wording of that brief press release & the casualness of the title: ‘BLOWN AWAY’ that has me shaking my head. is that a clue to the nature of the show ?
do they just mean BLOWN AWAY as in WOWED !! – I mean, BLOWN AWAY – esp in an explosion – can mean having your body blown to parts. and yet the card and show is presented in such an up-beat way.
I mean they actually are screening MICHELANGELO ANTONIONI’S famous film ‘BLOWUP’ (1966)
as part of the program – with apanel discussion title, get this – “Rupture in FILM’ featuring U of I faculty members.
but, we also note GERHARD RICHTER & THOMAS RUFF are in the show – so that’s a possibility for some thematic and possibly political – as well as purely plastic explosions.
Maybe they have that great computer generated series of photographs by THOMAS RUFF – on the WORLD TRADE CENTER disaster/explosion ? This drop-dead amazing series of photographs were shown in March 2001 at DAVID ZWIRNER, in a THOMAS RUFF exhibit simply titled: ‘New Work’.
I think, (that’s I think) – they were priced at $80,000 a piece, in a very limited edition, even at that time.
here’s one from our archives:

~TAYLOR McKIMENS/DESERT BOY MEETS SNOW !!

Taylor holiday 2007
HAPPY HOLIDAYS 2007 – ARTWORK BY TAYOR McKIMENS/IMAGE COURTESY: TAYLOR McKIMENS

THIS IS THE HOLIDAY GREETING TAYOR McKIMENS SENT OUT THIS SEASON. GUESS IT RATED AS THE BEST HOLIDAY GREETING – FROM AN ARTIST – 2007 !!

didn’t post it immediately cause we were waiting on some info from TAYLOR – that never came in – like: where the hell was he & what did all this mean ?

we had heard some buzz on the street that Taylor had left, his Brooklyn haunts (temporarily ? permanently ? – or at least for now ?) to hang out in LONDON, ONTARIO – with his pals – the COMMUNITY OUTREACH (Gallery) crew, in LONDON, ONTARIO, CANADA – but no one would confirm anything for publication – Taylor made like someone with real Native American ghosts in his bloodstream – (we’ve heard rumors to that effect) – and left his visual smoke signals to stand as his only communication. the sign on the porch – does say: “THREE BEDROOM FOR RENT “.

and, upon on seeing his new painting coming out of his GALLERI LOYAL show, opening this week in STOCKHOLM – and factoring in the cryptic title: “SWEET DREAMS OF PHOENIX” – we think its a safe bet to say TAYLOR must be spending some time up in CANADA – cause there sure ain’t any snow around here !! not even in BROOKLYN.

But, there’s tons of snow up in Canada – don’t ask how we know – trust me, we just do !!
and it looks to be having a great visual impact on Taylor – who was sprung to life – under the great American South West desert sun – being born in 1976 – and raised in the small, totally art forsaken desert town of WINTERHAVEN, ARIZONA, near the Mexican border.
He once told us the only art he ever saw, or even knew of – growing up, was MAD MAGAZINE, assorted comic books and the GARBAGE PAIL KIDS – !!

One of the things that freaked Taylor out, when he moved to New York – was all the exposure the local kids get here – to all kinds of art – street art, graphic art, exhibition banners of all kinds floating from museum buildings; they really just take it for granted how art bombards them, and how much they really know about art – if they stopped to think about it. – and, we’re not just talking about the ones who get trucked around from DAY ONE – in their new-born baby pouches, and then strollers – to museums and gallery openings. Though I remember Taylor being especially in awe of that class of NYC kid art-know-it-all.
He says all he saw growing up – were cactuses and broken down pick-up trucks. He thought comic books were the beginning – and end all – of visual civilization. Later in his teens, in high school – he thought modern art ended with ANDY WARHOL – cause that’s where any of the old art books he could scare up – ended !

It’s a bit of long story – he entered a commercial – ‘can you draw – we can help you’ – type school – where an inspired instructor luckily saw his talent – and turned him onto the real art world and told him – to go !! After graduating from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California – Taylor hooked up with a young independent curator and artist, RICH JACOBS. Rich Jacobs is pretty well known here in New York, for his brilliant group shows at various venues, (he did that great ‘BALL POINT PEN DRAWING SHOW at CINDERS a year or so, back, and one at FUSE , too) – in the past several years. Though sadly, we have heard that Rich Jacobs recently moved back west. At any rate, back in the day – RICH JACOBS gave Taylor his first break – like he did so many others – by including his work in the ‘MOVE’ series of shows he was then curating at New Image Art Gallery in Los Angeles, and which led New Image Art – to give Taylor his first solo show in 2001. the rest is history – or will be.
Not sure when Taylor actually moved to New York, but he was included in the Year 2000 exhibit: ‘MOVE FOUR’, RICH JACOBS curated at P.S. 122, in New York. There’s a bio for Taylor on the Gallerie Loyal website – but it just basically lists his shows. It does say he: Lives and Works in New York – so I guess – this stay in Canada – is just as if he went upstate – (like JACKSON POLLOCK went to the {remote} Hamptons w-a-y back in that day), except Taylor had to go a just little bit further north (in this day) – to find some solace and a change in scene.

so, cactus boy – meets snow – that funny cold white stuff that (still) falls copiously in Canada – isn’t it great – how there is always something new to marvel at, and paint about – in this crazy, one could say, self-destroying – world of ours !! Good luck with your show, and opening tonight, wish we could be there to see it – from all of your your friends back here, in NYC.

AVEY TARE & KRIA BREKKAN WITH DEAKIN – was a-m-a-z-in-g !!
AVEY TARE, the singer, and guitar (also of ANIMAL COLLECTIVE) was of another world. as in mesmerizing.
DEAKIN, guitar & what looked like mini electronic/digital boards (also of ANIMAL COLLECTIVE) input amped up juice also of another world. meaning off the charts – musical & mystical, multi-dimensional sound layers.
KRIA BREKKAN, was beautiful inside and out. She played musical sound riffs on her accordian.
There were about, (over ?) 200 people in the audience. All were spellbound during the performance.

PRESS RELEASE

UP-DATE: THURS JAN 24, 2008 – 6:40 PM

AMERICAN HANDSCAPE – is – simply – one of the best shows in NY right now.
The work is in multiples and still fairly under the radar – meaning !! – with prices averaging $20/$30/$40 a print – – you can not lose. unless you’re brain dead & miss out !!!! Some of the prints are in numbered editions. but, even the band posters – which were made in limited editions of 100/150 prints, max. – and with many, well at least some – lost to actual promotional use – i.e. stuck to venue windows, etc, even the band posters are serious collector’s items.
JUDGE was at the opening. G. KELLY was not – she was back in L.A.
JUDGE was that kind of down-to-earth talented craftsperson/artist one often meets up with on film crews or production sets. More a “roadie” than a “fine art studio” artist – her art nevertheless beats ‘hands-down’ – easily – a lot of what we’ve seen recently in Chelsea. Apart from touring and making many venue posters with NEKO CASE – an (a-m-a-z-i-n-g) girl singer, who is also is the long time singer for the hot VANCOUVER band – THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS – JUDGE has also made posters for: CALEXICO and FREAKWATER – with many examples of these, and the NEKO CASE posters – in the show.
G. KELLY posters cover bands such as: CALIFONE, WILCO, SEBADOH, ANDREW BIRD, and BONNIE PRINCE BILLY.

BRING CASH – THE ARM DOESN’T SEEM TO TAKE CREDIT CARDS – and if they have a few copies of the one on the wall – you want – you can get your print right away !! – cash & carry – can’t be better than that. (unless you want to bring into consideration – the BRIAN CHIPPENDALE SCREENPRINTS over at CINDERS – and they are $60/a piece. equal in print mastery – but very different in themes & tonality. get BOTH !!)
