Tan Lin can best be described as a conceptualist/sensualist/author/poet/writer/artist.
One of his most notable projects is: ‘BlipSoak 01’ (Berkeley, CA: Atelos 2003) – in which he states:
“A lot of people think great works of literature should be memorized. I think poems and novels are most beautiful at the exact moment in which they are forgotten.”
His most recent book is: ‘Plagerism/Outsource’ – a project that chronicles Heath Ledger’s death through SMS messages and RSS feeds.
the first thing one sees on entering the gallery – are Lucas and Julien’s handmade newspapers – a weekly discourse highlighting their project, and incorporating the words and images of invited guests – free for the taking.

in the back room, our favorite piece – LUCAS AJEMIAN and JULIEN BISMUTH – ‘LA TABLE TRISTE (A is for 4)’. 2008 mixed media, Dimensions variable.
it was all about letters. and meanings and form and style. not to mention flat vs. 3-Dimensional and studied vs. random and haphazard !! yesterday, today and tomorrow !!
artist studio and gallery presentation.
there was also a small pinpoint wall projection – here is a frame that states: “E is for . .” in green.
big and small. studied vs. free form. flat and 3-D !! color and no color. paper letters. cardboard letters.
letters alone, and letters in words with meaning.
‘found’ letters and . . . solid brass letters.
‘flat’ letter-making utensils !!
and home-made 3-D constructions.
can you spot – the tip of the literal – capital A – for Art ??
hint: it’s orange.
Capital A – is 3-D !!
drawings on the table – that have nothing to do with letters ? or do they.
maybe these jars speak to half-full content ? or just to the dreams within letters.
tubes of drawings like an architect would have tubes of plans – on his table.
some have actual letters, made-up words – some are more like – visual poems, and therefore: letters ?
today’s paper – a study in fonts – it went up on the table !!
there was even a conceptual letter ‘G’ – hanging in the space under the table.

SINCE Panda Bear’s CD – Personal Pitch – of 2007, proved that great, beautiful and
important music can be made using all those exotic electronic musical toys, I wholeheartedly
recommend the High Places’ debut self-titled CD – HIGH PLACES.
This girl-boy team make really lyrical electronic noise that’s original, majestic and emotive.
And, guess what !! – you can also dance to it.
There is also buzz circulating about the THRILL JOCKEY EP of earlier 7 in. vinyls – the band had put out, before this full-length CD.
Listen to it LOUD, so that it’s lush seductive sound envelopes and dominates you.
The one music video on “Yours is the only Tube” – is not to be missed.
Bells, whistles and shakers forever, so Rock on Girls and Boys.

at least JONATHAN HOROWITZ, longtime ‘domestic’ partner of ROB PRUITT – can take solace in the fact – that he didn’t do anything quite as original, or potent – as SHEPARD FAIREY’S – iconic OBAMA portrait – that went around the world and back again !! and I bet SHEPARD FAIREY is pissed off, too.
He didn’t make a folk hero out of this guy – just for his skin color – did he?
BARACK OBAMA, in putting the slimey ‘REVEREND’ RICK WARREN who: 1. supports the outlawing of abortion in all cases !! and, 2. is a “stanch gay rights opponent” !! – in the spotlight at his presidential inauguration – before the entire world – !! – as the spokesman and symbol of America’s religious and spiritual leadership – has taken one very hard and dismissive slap at all of the free forward thinking people who fueled the grass roots engine of his campaign. I bet REVEREND WRIGHT, is saying I told you so: a black panther – can change his spots !! this ‘new’ regime – feels so sold-out already. SAMO / same old same old.

(that’s how bad this year is – don’t even have a lowdown $50 to blow on art – what with the quote unquote recession, trickling down. and BERNIE MADE-OFF – I mean MADOFF – which is pronounced – MADE-OFF !!
a lot of the people he swindled were just plain dumb and/or plain crooks – they were so head-over-heels rolling around in the big mega-bucks – they didn’t really want to double check, those phony baloney invoice statements – full of zeros, as in millions and billions. now, they really have all the zeroes they want !! talk about a 50 BILLION $$ NYC SCAM- ARTIST !! heard tell – some of them were art buyers – on some level. probably not on cool stuff like this – but hey, let’s not go into that… its already bad enuff. it’s the last thing we need in NYC coming down the pipeline, and hitting all us little guys – at the end of the food chain. the guys at the top of the chain – are no joke – falling like flies. .. with some taking the real exit out – swinging from DIY closet nooses in London and slitting their wrists over wastebaskets in NYC).
and everyone says – its gonna get worse. so back to the art !!
