~BRIAN BELOTT/Wipe That Clock Off Your Face

Belott summer book
PHOTO: Nancy Smith

BRIAN BELOTT – ‘Wipe That Clock Off Your face’ – is artlovers first ever:
* recommended summer reading *

TOP TEN REASONS WHY:

1. THE COVER and the back cover, too !!!! (love that 2 tone i and o)
2. The HEIGHT, WEIGHT, SIZE and FEEL of the book. (like a hardbound COLLEGE NOTEBOOK – but like, back in the day – when they really made them right!)
3. The ATTENTION to DETAIL, its even got beautifully rounded page corners, inside that hardbound cover, without zip sacrifice to CREATIVITY.
4. PICTUREBOX stepped up its game, & actually, who could think it possible, went to the next level – with this production.
5. It’s a musical page turner – you open it up – it starts with a bang & doesn’t let up.
6. The Lay-out & FONT CHOICES: including those 0f the 2 essays; with their CHILDRENS BOOKS hommage. (particularly reminds us of: Lio Lionni, esp ‘FREDERICK’S FABLES’ 1985, PANTHEON BOOKS)
7. The TABLE Of CONTENTS
(What is Time?, The Magic Tree, Needing Money, How to Make Problems, & Sometimes a Person Has Accidents). NOT !!!
8. 51. No Two People (Belott Drawings) & of course!!! 44. Estrellita
9. CHAPTER NINE (Belott Found Photos – arranged tres artfully. wow)
10. did we say: the TITLE PAGE: ‘THE VALUE OF BELIEVING IN YOURSELF – THE STORY of RUDY’. … and trust me!! he ain’t called Rudy for naught. !!!.

the card image: ‘Two Chambers’ (detail), 2007, oil and latex on wood and cardboard,

~ALFREDO MARTINEZ LANDS in BEIJING or/ HOMEBOY IN CHINA

ALFREDO MARTINEZ: NYC HOMEBOY HITS BEIJING -or- OUR MAN in CHINA…

isn’t the internet wonderful – the world is getting so small – ALFREDO MARTINEZ reports that:

he has been invited. . “to curate a show at 1artbase a 30,000 square foot space (see BELOW)
in a complex big enough to hold an art fair in. It’s all under construction but they work so fast here that you can go for coffee and come back and the doorways breaked (sic) over and a new doorway is installed twenty feeet along the wall. It’s so large we can basically drop a tank in there, and it looks like a toy. So I need to find at least 50 more artists (chinese or western, I don’t care, but obviously leaning toward chinese).

They’re giving me office/live-work space, and getting an assistant for me. So I am pretty sure I found my Chinese patrons if I play my cards right, and I am only coming back to NYC at gun point.”

PEi-MING-new

Photo: Nancy Smith

YAN-PEI-MING, a Chinese artist who divides his time between China and France,
has his first exhibit in nEW YORK at DAVID ZWIRNER . . . and it seems to be apylt
titled: ‘You maintain a sense of balance in the midst of great success’ . !!

MS. HUBERT, who is a Partner/Director at DAVID ZWIRNER, and who also happens
to speak fluent French, was translating for MR. PEI-MING, who speaks French and
Chinese, at a very charming and funny Q & A just before the show’s opening, last
Monday may 14, 2007.

They are standing in front of MR. PEI-MING’S series of large scale watercolors:
‘American Dollars 2007’. YAN PEI-MING said, .. when he first worked on them,
he didn’t know the meaning of the denominations – but that he DOES NOW !!!

Apparently, it’s his first trip to New York City and MS. HUBERT says … “He’s loving it !!”

the large black & white watercolors and 2 big monchrome self-portraits are up thru JUNE 16, 2007.
