(. . . as if! ) ALFREDO MARTINEZ with FANTCHA, who works next door at the NICOLE MILLER BOUTIQUE, just outside GREENHOUSE, on Greene St in Soho, Jan 4, 2007
ALFREDO MARTINEZ and GREENHOUSE just gotten written up in the VILLAGE VOICE.. there's a few choice lines in there, find them for yourself ! 'TRIGGER HAPPY ..on the Road to RUINS', by MICHAEL SPIES (Feb 18, 2007) |
. . . as down and dirty as it gets, JERRY FOUST aka JERRY MANSON the PISS CHRIST - the creative founder/director of GREENHOUSE GALLERY, had a habit of whiping out his dick to impress visitors, if that didn't do the trick, he'd actually try to piss on you. 'CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY SHOW', GREENHOUSE, Jan 4, 2007 |
JERRY FOUST aka JERRY MANSON the PISS CHRIST lives up to his nickname. ALFREDO MARTINEZ, the GREENHOUSE resident artist & guru, would just slough it off as.. 'performance art', but its one of the reasons, that GREENHOUSE, actually a wild hotbed of edgey creativity, didn't receive much p.r. support. 'CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY SHOW', GREENHOUSE, Jan 4, 2007 actually JERRY FOUST is a pretty talented artist & musician - he's kind of the anti-establishment poster boy for the totally commercial & career driven artworld of the first decade into this 21st Century. he actually looks a bit like Neil Young & can be quite charming, when he wants to be, but don't blink! |
|
. . . believe it or not, JERRY FOUST was a 'babe magnet' - it was actually quite a shock to come upon this 'open-to-the-public' madhouse in the middle of posh, well groomed Soho, and a lot of unsuspecting highend shoppers, Eurotrash wannabes & Japanese tourists walked in .. and back out, real quick! 'CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY SHOW', GREENHOUSE, Jan 4, 2007 |
. . actually ALFREDO thrived in this environment, where he not only had a huge space to assemble his re-cycled scrap (that's scrap, not crap..) sculptures, and TOTAL absolute artistic freedom - but he could also crash in the basement; AND .. he was THE resident 'bonafide' artist and guru, a role he loves, and was able to play even when he was incarcerated among hardcore criminals at the BROOKLYN MDC (Metropolitan Detention Center) for peddling fake BASQUIATS. 'CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY SHOW', GREENHOUSE, Jan 4, 2007 - sorry, GREENHOUSE doesn't maintain a website. ALFREDO MARTINEZ, 'Motorcycle, Dec 2006' assembled from scrap. all background (& floor) painting by JERRY FOUST. |
|
. . the 'GREENHOUSE CHRISTMAS 2006 - HOLIDAY SHOW'. JERRY FOUST did the painting, ALFREDO MARTINEZ built the structures. GREENHOUSE, Jan 4, 2007 |
THE GREENHOUSE 'CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY SHOW', it was kind of like a maze... ALFREDO MARTINEZ and JERRY FOUST, GREENHOUSE, Jan 4, 2007 |
.. a chair for ZEN mediation?, inside the creative 'paint and wood' labyrinth for madmen, ALFREDO MARTINEZ and JERRY FOUST, 'CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY SHOW', GREENHOUSE, Jan 4, 2007 it was located in the heart of chic Soho on Greene St - hence its name. |
|
. . 'LUCK' - on the floor, (it's better than walking into dog poop & outsized egos, on the street), ALFREDO MARTINEZ and JERRY FOUST, 'CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY SHOW 2006', GREENHOUSE, Jan 4, 2007 |
.. guess it did have some real content & purpose. detail of the painted floor, ALFREDO MARTINEZ and JERRY FOUST 'CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY SHOW', GREENHOUSE, Jan 4, 2007 of course, if you follow Alfredo's comings & goings, it wouldn't surprise you to learn that the place got shut down pretty much as quickly as the high end touristas came running out of there. rumours immediately circulated that ALFREDO MARTINEZ was resurrecting his role of 'art guru' with a fringe artist collective that had a tour lined up in CHINA, of all places. ... could this be true, could Alfredo even get a passport, let alone a travel visa ? |
ALFREDO MARTINEZ passport, courtesy MARK ENGER of EXPLODING SKY, who did some silkscreen work for Alfredo just before he left. (on JOSH HARRIS' dime). YEP, the artworld's #1 con artist & forger was heading to the #1 land of counterfeiting, and the country that alleged spiked your pet's food with rat poison, CHINA. EXPLODING SKY, APRIL 1, 2007 - and, no .. THIS IS NOT AN APRIL FOOLS JOKE. |
|
MARK ENGER made this silkscreen 'MUG SHOT' of ALFREDO MARTINEZ to commemorate the big trip to CHINA. The photo is of ALFREDO circa the big JOSH HARRIS funded 'MILLENNIUM 2000 - QUIET' live-in week-long 99 artist BASH! those are ALFREDO'S actual fingerprints. MARK says he was trying to give Alfredo the message about what would happen to him, if he acted the way he does here, over there .."you'll never see the light of day again, rotting in a Chinese prison forever..", EXPLODING SKY, April 1, 2007 |
MARK ENGER, ..'you tell him', of EXPLODING SKY WORLDWIDE SILKSCREEN SHOP, April 1, 2007 |
.. just happen to notice this 'NAZI' candle burning in a priceless KOREAN artifact, at the MARK ENGER, EXPLODING SKY SHOP, April 1, 2007 |
|
drawing by MARK ENGER, unfailingly ahead of the curve, as always, he calls it .. 'EATER', EXPLODING SKY WORLDWIDE, April 1, 2007 |
not to be undone, Mark's twin, MATT ENGER shows us his silkscreen on acrylic block of his ex pointing a gun at him... EXPLODING SKY WORLDWIDE, April 1, 2007 |
MATT ENGER, at home next door to the shop, in his own studio/workplace residence, in NEWARK, NJ, EXPLODING SKY WORLDWIDE, April 1, 007 looks like all the really cool NYC artists got gentrified right out of that wormy BIG APPLE & ended up, like the manifestation of some classic futuristic vision, on the other side of the PATH tunnel, in JERSEY. MATT ENGER is the subject of the NEXT!! STUDIO VISIT on artlovers, look out for it, gonna surface in about 2 weeks. |
