PRESS RELEASE

UP-DATE: THURS JAN 24, 2008 – 6:40 PM

AMERICAN HANDSCAPE – is – simply – one of the best shows in NY right now.
The work is in multiples and still fairly under the radar – meaning !! – with prices averaging $20/$30/$40 a print – – you can not lose. unless you’re brain dead & miss out !!!! Some of the prints are in numbered editions. but, even the band posters – which were made in limited editions of 100/150 prints, max. – and with many, well at least some – lost to actual promotional use – i.e. stuck to venue windows, etc, even the band posters are serious collector’s items.
JUDGE was at the opening. G. KELLY was not – she was back in L.A.
JUDGE was that kind of down-to-earth talented craftsperson/artist one often meets up with on film crews or production sets. More a “roadie” than a “fine art studio” artist – her art nevertheless beats ‘hands-down’ – easily – a lot of what we’ve seen recently in Chelsea. Apart from touring and making many venue posters with NEKO CASE – an (a-m-a-z-i-n-g) girl singer, who is also is the long time singer for the hot VANCOUVER band – THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS – JUDGE has also made posters for: CALEXICO and FREAKWATER – with many examples of these, and the NEKO CASE posters – in the show.
G. KELLY posters cover bands such as: CALIFONE, WILCO, SEBADOH, ANDREW BIRD, and BONNIE PRINCE BILLY.

BRING CASH – THE ARM DOESN’T SEEM TO TAKE CREDIT CARDS – and if they have a few copies of the one on the wall – you want – you can get your print right away !! – cash & carry – can’t be better than that. (unless you want to bring into consideration – the BRIAN CHIPPENDALE SCREENPRINTS over at CINDERS – and they are $60/a piece. equal in print mastery – but very different in themes & tonality. get BOTH !!)

MULTIPLES AND EDITIONS, VOL. 2 – CURATED BY ETHAN CRENSON
JANUARY 11 – JANUARY 27, 2008
FRONT ROOM GALLERY – 147 ROEBLING ST – WILLIAMSBURG – BROOKLYN – NY
HOURS: FRI-SUN 1-6PM & BY APPOINTMENT

. . . . just when you thought there was nothing new to see, nowhere to go and certainly
NOTHING !! you could afford to buy – you turn a corner on a Williamsburg street – and there it is – a huge happening party, fueled by those crazy great orange PERNOD cocktails, a big group show full of the greatest new work – you’d never imagined existed; and whose artists, not a one – have you heard of before – even though you stalk the art scene incessantly – and !! – best of all – you could walk away with your arms loaded with work – !! – the limited edition multiples range in price from $1 – yes $1 !! – with most averaging in the $20 – $25 range – and the higher production pieces – topping out at about $80 bucks. some large pieces hit a grand ($1,000). even the biggest loser, could walk out happy – like I did – with 2 pieces – for $2 total expenditure – yep, that’s one buck a piece.

o.k. I exaggerated about one thing – I did know one of the artists, but only one, tTRAVIS LINDQUIST, whose path I had just crossed for the first time in about 3 years, over at the ‘MYTH’ opening, the same night at McCAIG and WELLES. AIMEE CHAN, the Associate Director at FRONT ROOM, also had stopped by ‘MYTH” and they both invited me over to check out the FRONT ROOM opening, just 2 blocks away.

the show’s curator, ETHAN CRENSON, with, his wife, ALIC. they both have work in the show.

ETHAN told me he got the idea for the show while he was out visiting different artists’ studios. Many, as is the custom these days, had ‘left-overs’ from small edition series they had produced for previous shows, and he thought – this would be a good genesis to build a group show around – he was right !! and we are not talking just limited edition prints, either, like back in the day. Just observing – the range and diversity of the limited artist editions – was totally entertaining !!!
Plus they were all really well made, whether handmade or super ‘professionally’ produced – and most all, had a conceptual edge, as well as a uniquely visual richness.

multiples # 4
the show has a poster – on really nice shiny card-stock – and a small catalog book, that not only gives detailed info on all the pieces, but serves up small, interesting bios on the participating artists, all 60 of them. The card and poster are based on a butcher’s ANGUS BEEF CHART, with the artist’s names placed – where the names of the cuts of meat were, in the original ..

multiples # 5
for some crazy reason, the first piece that grabs our eye is a small sign on a door, that we realize later leads into the gallery office.

multiples # 6
but for the moment, its the doorway to ‘EROTIC INFORMATION’.
. . . turns out – to be a piece by the curator, ETHAN CRENSON.

it’s really interesting to go to the show and see the actual sizes of the pieces above. the jpegs were pretty much posted – sized as they came in (most likely, web/formatted by the artists individually) – and, there are some real surprises.

The JAMES BRITTINGHAM piece is much larger than it appears to be, above. The MICHAEL GREATHOUSE piece is much, much smaller in reality, and the PETE PEZZIMENTI painting, is probably the largest painting in the show !!

The show is hung beautifully, and all things taken into account – one has to say: there is a definite & dynamic visual and conceptual edge to this show. The rawness of the space and its off-the-beaten track feel – only add to the almost tangible, yet mysterious and provocative visual experience.

“The cast of characters you see here have been friends for along time. Thrown together by the world of tattooing, three of them are tattoo artists and three of them long time canvases for them to make their mark on.

Suggested by Josh Lord, ‘Myth’, was a fitting theme for the show. With all our tattoo experience, the idea of exploding myth was a natural one. In further conversations with one another we began to really push our own ideas of what ‘myth’ really meant to each of us. The one constant in our conversations was that everyone needs it in their lives in some from or fashion. Whether it is an interest in an ancient religion, not believing in a popular thought, or completely starting one of your own, myth is always someplace in our thoughts, driving us on our paths in one way or another.

This show is a culmination of our thoughts and beliefs on this topic.”
