~KYLE WILLIAMS & NICHOLAS STEINDORF, ‘YES’ . . MICROSCOPE

‘YES’ . . . !!

YES . . . !!

Microscope-gallery-brooklyn

MICROSCOPE . . did exactly that.
it took the usually / confined to web viewing, i.e. postage stamp sized . . innovative, and tech-centric videos of KYLE WILLIAMS and NICHOLAS STEINDORF, and blew them up, BIG.
and I mean . . really really big, on a 12 ft. screen, and to make matters even more intense and STUNNING – the huge screen was positioned right up-front & center / as in, zero degree / bulls eye close-up to the viewers.
and yes !!
both artists’ works greatly benefited, both from the large scale, and the intense, intimate venue.
put it this way: the audience got to go on an amazing, & dynamic . . video bender.
it was like sitting – in the first car of a super-charged roller coaster, but skewed to the eye of thinking man, of course.
no doubt about it.

KYLE-WILLIAMS---red-cat
SCREENGRAB: KYLE WILLIAMS – VIDEO

unlike the 2, really 3 previous video/film screenings I saw,
(1) MICHAEL FLEMING’S Instagram ‘micro’ screening / an installation ‘documentary’ of the . . .
(2) MICHI MEKO – vintage quilt / SAIGE ROWE – projection at DAY & NIGHT PROJECTS, in Atlanta Georgia – which was. quickly put: a ‘micro’ Mother Earth ‘narrative’ of a plant growing and being uprooted from rich dark soil, and
(3) TOMMY MALEKOFF’S ‘micro’ in running time, big punch . . landscape documentary on Kudzu the great green destroyer . .

KYLE, and NICHOLAS’ work . . was very different.
not at all rooted in documentary (kudzu), or even staged/edited (the quilt projection) – these guys live in the realm of FICTION, PERCEPTION, ABSTRACTION, MOTION, CURIOSITY, PAST, FUTURE, CONCEPT, TECHNICAL EFFECTS & . . PURE POETRY.

although, there was also this gorgeous conceptual split, even there:
because while Kyle creates his magic with real photo-based objects, Nicholas uses futuristic / totally imagined CGI animation.

While KYLE uses real life objects, they spin in a universe of their very own making – it’s a tale of physics, fiction and in a strange way: fusion.
fusion of the abstract . . to the real.

while NICHOLAS . . is just totally off the reality grid, altogether.

while I can send you to Kyle’s website, to view his work, there is no way to share – just how profoundly gorgeous, these things were, projected onto that huge Microscope screen, upfront & very personal.
very intimate. very headspinning, very shape shifting.

I have to say, this is one of my faves, very classical – All-American photo / poetry.

KYLE’S works screened first, and then came . . NICHOLAS.
that very first image of a huge huge ‘ZACH’, his iconic imaginary science boy / nerd of the future, looming up in-you-face, on that huge Microscope screen is seared into my brain, forever.
what a . . pop.

~TOMMY MALEKOFF: ‘PERENNIAL SHADOWS’ . . JEFFREY STARK

THEN AGAIN, surprise, surprise.

ALL THAT IS ‘GREEN, leafy & organic’ – is not . . . GOLD !!

KUDZU – THE GREAT INVADER.

on the other hand,
TOMMY MALEKOFF . . . set the tech ‘gold’ standard for video clip running time: 6 minutes !!!

‘PERENNIAL SHADOWS’ – a film by TOMMY MALEKOFF
featuring original music by JOE WILLIAMS & a poetry reading by rapper PROJECT PAT.
poem by TOMMY MALEKOFF.

This was ‘new video’ screening . . .
in an alternative, surprising / ‘micro’ gallery venue, of a poignant film on the fearsome nature of ‘interloper/predator’ super species / micro/bio / ‘green’ engineering, gone – wrong.
the 6 minute film, projected on the back wall of a small steel & glass futuristic mini-box of venue . . was a . . visual knock-out.
a break-out. break-down, lyrical. factual. on point & . . cutting edge.
visual ‘dream’ . . of a living nightmare.

it presented the all-green, leafy Kudzu reality, for what is: a rolling landscape of territorial ‘take-over’. in a gently revealing, supremely edited & visually stunning . . ‘tourist’ ride.
we are taken for an overview – made by a local insider.
a lovely, leafy death sandwich, munch on that.

Presented last THURS FEB 9 – SUN FEB 19, 2017 . . .

‘PERENNIAL SHADOWS’ . . .
ran as a continuous loop, accessible through the storefront window of the alternative, minimalist JEFFREY STARK GALLERY, located in the basement lower level of a busy mini-mall – in the heart of New York’s Chinatown.
the sound track was audible though a small exterior speaker.

JEFFREY STARK, which seems to be the brainchild of ANGELO LANZA,
is actually an ‘alternative’ to a pop-up, (as well as to the mainstream art scene in general) in that – the venue is ongoing, but without the need to ‘staff’ itself on a regular basis, being that all the shows at the small box-like space, are visible – through the glass storefront every day, 9am – 9pm.

as well, there is an online real time surveillance camera focused on the storefront which also constitutes the homepage of the gallery’s website / & which lets you see what’s going on in there; the shows, the install, the openings, the down times . . . 24/7.

check it out: read more, see past & upcoming agendas / watch the action, or non-action as the case might be: JEFFREY STARK GALLERY, CHINATOWN

JEFFREY STARK GALLERY gets its name from the former occupant of the underground mini-mart . . ‘booth’.

TOMMY-MALEKOFF---Perennial-Shadows-screening
Filmmaker TOMMY MALEKOFF . .
presents a short film on how KUDZU, a green leafy vine / an organic plant, once thought to be a ‘lifesaver’ turns out to be – not . . ‘so much’.

Tommy-Malekoff-kudzu-#2
truth be told, it was kind of thrilling.
both the film & . . the mini-mall viewing locale.
the profound implications of the free-growing / no-stopping-it green ivy gone wild, as the camera catches it devouring everything in its path, obliterating the native plants & absolutely covering ALL historical & cultural footprints.
with no preaching, bye the way.
TOMMY MALEKOFF, is just showing it . . like it is. the imagery just simmers along. and makes its point.
the camera’s gaze – is as light as a bird.

Kudzu: the green super-ivy is a real death threat. a real migrant, if you want to put the ‘word du jour’, in a truly frightening context. an invasive ‘Mother Earth’ endgame, a globalization take-over, disguised as rolling greenery, poetry-in-motion – traced out for you, with a gorgeous, haunting photographic eye, a ghostly, ancient & delicate Japanese-inspired soundtrack, and a few words of spoken poetry towards the end.

Screening: in the midst of teeming inner-city commercialism.
it was, for an incredible moment, an experience of what I can only term as . . . cultural ‘intersection’.
though the film could be shown in a cardboard box, and it would still weave . . its magic.

Tommy-Malekoff--Kudzu-creeps-along
there it goes, the interloper Kudzu . . creeping along.
TOMMY MALEKOFF who is now New York-based, grew up in North Carolina, where this ‘not-so-green-is-it’ nature endgame is taking place, and so he is by DNA, born & bred . . close to the subject at hand.

Tommy-Malekoff---steam-shoel-vs-kudzu
man vs nature.

Tommy-Malekoff-Kudzu-shadows
relentless . .

Tommy-Malekoff---abandoned-Kudzu-take-over
the . . ‘living’ DEAD.

TOMMY-MALEKOFF,-JEFFREY-STARK-mini-mall-Chinatown-
the industrial crowded mini-mall environment, would make you think . . all that is ‘green’ is preferable, – but NOT !!
but still, all the better – to see . . the ART.

Tommy-Malekoff,-montage
that is a montage of ‘stills’ or otherwise related photos, from the film – on the opposite wall, in a display case, the kind ‘realtors’ use.

Tommy-Malekoff-photo---boy-w-bat
boy with a bat, sinister undertones. photo detail, display case.

Tommy-Malekoff---nature-walk
nature walk. photo detail, display case.
your typical ‘real estate’ or ‘tour company’ display, not.

Tomy-Malekoff---photo-display-case
Kudzu: an organic ‘destroyer’, a green ‘interloper’ originally sourced from Japan, now eating up North Carolina . . .
captured in a photo-montage, in an industrial display case, in the lower level of a mini-mall in Chinatown, exhibited in a gallery with 24/7 online – surveillance.
if that’s not . . .
GLOBALIZATION, and the face of the future, I don’t know – what is.

TOMMY-MALEKOFF,-JACK-IRV-&-ASPEN
TOMMY MALEKOFF at the right.
from left, artists: JACK IRV and ASPEN.
Aspen also hails from North Carolina, Greensboro. as does Tommy.

TOMMY MALEKOFF shows me where they screened the film for the opening night, right in the center of the mall on a large screen that hung from the higher level.

screening-venue
this where they hung a large screen & projected the film for the opening.
right next to the escalators, and all that shiny metal and glass.
and industrial red Chinese signage.
deep ‘mall’ space. =may as well be . . deep outer space.
it’s so far out – from the usual gallery scene.
huge. cavernous. commerce & tech-oriented ambience.

Tommy-Malekoff---Perennial-Shadows---opening-crowd
the opening night – crowd, on Tommy’s phone.
they knew they were encapsulated – in a special moment.
it was the night of the big storm – or I never would have missed it.

~MICHI MEKO & SAIGE ROWE, quilt & video projection . . curated by SELENA (Bushwick), DAY & NIGHT PROJECTS, (Atlanta, Georgia)

‘MICRO’ PROJECTIONS . . as in / VIDEOS – on INSTAGRAM – SAY A LOT !!
& TRAVEL . . FAR !!

what can I say . .
the world is getting smaller and smaller, viewing ‘screens’ are getting smaller & smaller, BUT !!
the opportunities for someone to see your work, are conversely getting: larger & larger.
& that’s a . . good thing.

I SAW 3 . . . NEW VIDEO SCREENINGS, this weekend.
one was via Instagram, of a larger video screening projected unconventionally onto a quilt block !!
in a gallery in Atlanta, Georgia.
kind of like . . those nesting Russian eggs.
it was a tiny ‘video loop’ . . of a larger ‘video loop projection’ in an installation, that caught my attention.
in a city far away, Atlanta, Georgia – so there was no way I could have caught it otherwise.

so, maybe I saw 4 new !!!!!! videos / this weekend ????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
all different – SIZES !!!!!!!!!

the next video I saw, projected onto a good sized wall, in a very hardcore / innovative alternative ‘gallery’ space in Chinatown, I actually viewed through the mini mall/storefront glass window.
while the final viewing, took place in a more conventional gallery space, but with a ‘shockingly’ great big screen – upfront & personal !!

let’s start one with the one I saw, in a rather ‘new wave’ fashion / that is, by social media ‘remote’, as in:

I caught a digital / video clip glimpse of . . an installation, by way of a beautifully shot – video posted to Instagram by @mountain.bushwick . . aka MICHAEL FLEMING.

MOUNTAIN is an artist-run space, so why the shock, that it’s founder/director – can produce a pretty mean . . . video clip ?!!

the subject: the ‘lyrical quilt – video projection’ . . by MICHI MEKO & SAIGE ROWE, curated by SELENA GALLERY . . .
for a 2 part concurrent exhibition – now up at DAY & NIGHT PROJECTS, in Atlanta, Georgia.

SELENA GALLERY . . is an artist-run space co-founded by ANJULI RATHOD & OLIVIA SWIDER, located in Bushwick, Brooklyn, N.Y.

Michi-Meko-&-Saige-Rowe-#-1
MICHI MEKO . . salvaged the vintage quilt / SAIGE ROWE . . made the video.
the video is projected onto one block – of the old farm quilt. quite a pretty idea.
especially because the video is all about greenery, & dirt & . . roots. the ’round’ circle . . of ‘life’.
the ‘sampling’ of organic growth.
very very moving. quick. graphic, fresh. & lyrical.
factual.

Michi-Meko-&-Sage-Rowe
I quite liked this particular frame / because although the woman’s hand is about to pull up a ‘rooted’ plant, the gesture mimics a woman’s hand, sewing – a quilt.
the farmer & the quiltmaker – have very intertwining history.

Michi-Meko-&-Saige-Rowe-#3
the big picture / nature / mother earth.
in it’s best, and yet sadly . . most threatened ‘glory’.
please. don’t put up that damn parking lot.

NOTE ALL 3 IMAGES ABOVE: are screengrabs from a ‘micro’ video loop – of the DAY & NIGHT PROJECTS, ‘BUSHWICK TO ATLANTA’ exhibit / that was posted to Instagram by @mountain.bushwick, aka MICHAL FLEMING.
thank you !!

~HAPPY BIRTHDAY . . LOUIS COMFORT TIFFANY / MET AMERICAN WING

TIFFANY-
@metamercianwing:

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY to LOUIS COMFORT TIFFANY,
born on this day, FEB 18, 1848 !!

ALTHOUGH TIFFANY worked in nearly every artistic medium, including painting, watercolor, ceramics, furniture, textiles, and metalwork, he is best known for his work in glass.

A TRUE VISIONARY, TIFFANY worked with expert glass makers to create new glass formulas that resulted in revolutionary colors and textures, such as the rough Lava or ‘volcanic’ glass used for this bowl.

Bowl, by Louis C. Tiffany and Tiffany Studios, ca. 1908.”

IMAGE & TEXT: via Instagram @metamericanwing / MET MUSEUM AMERICAN WING.

note: I’m thinking it should read, “worked in nearly every artistic medium”, . . . available during his life.
he handled many precious materials that not easy to get hold of today, and many skills have been lost; on one side – on the other . . digital imaging, or even acrylic, or even spray paint – was to be, born.

interestingly, although SELENA is a Bushwick-based gallery, they will be curating a show with 2 Georgia-based artists, and I guess there’s some inherent dialogue, just in that.

SELENA . . will pair Georgia artists MICHI MEKO and SAIGE ROWE, in a concurrent show whose title ‘IN TIME OF SILVER RAIN’ “shares the same title as LANGSTON HUGHES’ poem from 1947, which speaks to a time of change when winter is ending and spring is beginning.”
