the show runs: WED DECEMBER 3 through SUN DECEMBER 7, 2008
Midblock East, 3250 NE 1st Avenue/Midtown Boulevard at 32nd St., MIAMI, FLORIDA
HOURS: 12-9 PM

THERE WILL BE A MUSICAL PERFORMANCE FEATURING LANSING-DREIDEN AND THE NEW HUMANS ON THE EVENING OF THURSDAY, DEC 4, FROM 9PM-1AM.

JUSTIN LOWE, RYAN McGINLEY, ROB PRUITT, STERLING RUBY, and ED RUSCHA.

“When I came across the space and ascertained its availability, ” says The Station Director ELEANOR CAYRE, “It suddenly seemed like the perfect place to express the commitment and admiration I have for working artists. I felt it was important to produce an event that retains a sense of intimacy and urgency. I think that the building itself, along with the artworks selected, addresses transience and fleeting immediacy. It’s curatorially rigorous; those things aren’t necessarily related. The Station isn’t about yesterday or tomorrow – it’s about right now.”

from the artlovers homepage – DEC 2, 2008:
* NATE LOWMAN & SHAMIM MOMIN’S – MIAMI EXHIBIT – ‘THE STATION’ is looking to take that sunny beach town – by storm !! it’s got a hard edged in-your-face big A art feel – that actually flies – !! – just rec’d some advance images and they are awesome !! *

. . . the show DID !! gave substance to Director ELEANOR CAYRE’S P.R. statement: . . . “it’s about right now” !! – and it did score major press !!

In his report from Miami – published yesterday (SATURDAY, DEC 6, 2008) – NEW YORK TIMES art critic – KEN JOHNSON wrote:
“The most transporting single artwork on view in Miami, however, is not at any of the commercial fairs. It is an astounding installation in ‘THE STATION’, an exhibition organized by SHAMIN MOMIN, a curator at the WHITNEY MUSEUM of AMERICAN ART, and by New York artist NATE LOWMAN. This lively, scruffy show occupies parts of three floors in a building still under construction in the Miami Design District and presents works by a familiarly trendy cast of characters, including STERLING RUBY, HANNA LIDEN, RYAN McGINLEY, TOM BURR and many others.
“The piece that makes everything else there pale by comparison is ‘Hello Meth Lab With a View’ by JONAH FREEMAN and JUSTIN LOWE. Mr. Freeman and Mr. Lowe have created a walk-in simulation of the grungy interior of a house whose occupants have been producing crystal meth. You enter what appears to be a photography gallery and then continue into dark rooms where you behold an extraordinarily messy kitchen full of cobbled-together laboratory equipment.
“Like Alice in a scary Wonderland, you continue through a dining room where the table is heaped with trash and packages of Sudafed and then upstairs to a claustrophobic warren of rooms where shelves are stocked with old jars of murky liquid, and where a couple of stuffed dogs are sleeping. Antique diagrams pinned to the walls suggest an equation between the heretical arts of the medieval alchemists and those of modern outlaw drug makers. Like the installations of CHRISTOPH BUCHEL, the work creates an obviously artificial but magically evocative virtual reality. . . ”

unsung

88’s presents:
UNSUNG / NEW WORK BY GEORGE FERRANDI and JOHN ORTH
the show opened FRIDAY NOV 14, 2008 / 7-10 PM
and runs: NOVEMBER 14 – DECEMBER 28, 2008
CINDERS GALLERY – 103 HAVEMEYER – BETWN HOPE + GRAND – WILLIAMSBURG – BROOKLYN
HRS: WED-SUN 1-7 PM

PHOTOS FROM THE OPENING ARE JUST GOING LIVE – NOW.

. . . as we read the press release, we found it so entertaining, & informative – we’re putting it forth here, for all to enjoy !!

“WE invite you to come see UNSUNG, the first installation by the collective known as “88’s” – short for “88’s and good numbers” which is CB (short wave/citizens band/truckers radio) lingo for “Best Wishes and Regards”.
“The work in Unsung started with conversations concerning the current presidential campaign. Our plea for a massive paradigm shift had 88’s collective members GEORGE FERRANDI and JOHN ORTH contemplating what parts of their own psyches could use some serious shifting. They started with the imagery they associated with grassroots revolution – daggers, dynamite, pistols, the felled heads of toppled statues, and the closed eyes of innocents. Then they created, painted, cast plaster and carved wooden forms that relegate the physical violence of uprising safely to the realm of metaphor, but stil speak to a simmering volatility and to the potential for cataclysmic change.
“GEORGE FERRANDI moved to Brooklyn on September 10, 2001 and became a New Yorker the next day. She runs a small business called Saints alive, which restores statues for churches. On any given day, her studio is given over in equal parts to the broken bodies of saints and to the less refined, but equally fractured figures of her own making. JOHN ORTH splits his time between GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA, where he tends to a succulent garden and a band names HOLOPAW on the SUBPOP record label, and Brooklyn , USA where he fleshes out his many creative projects and hangs on the arm of his lovely boyfriend, ALAN. On any given day, his house is given over to various whittlings, delicate stippled drawings, and stacks of song lyrics scrawled on Steno pads.
“The two met in GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA where George was a professor at the University of Florida. Soon after meeting, they organized an exhibit at an old old train depot. This was the beginning of over a decade of collaborations that have included several national shows, a traveling circus (Cloudseeding Circus of the Performative Object), a comic strip, and an unfortunate summer haircut.
“Their latest collaboration, the 88’s collective, is a celebration of their complimentary sensibilities and shared interest in delicately adorned pathos, B-movie violence, and small hyper-sexualized animals. They’re happy to have 88’s as a conceptual hook on which to hang the many hats of their creative efforts and to present UNSUNG – as the first of those.”

. . . ” a peanut gallery is an audience that heckles the performer. The term originated in the days of vaudeville as a nickname for the cheapest (and ostensibly rowdiest) seats in the theater; the cheapest snack served at the theater would often be peanuts, which patrons would sometimes throw at the performers on stage to show their disapproval. The phrases “no comments from the peanut gallery” or “quiet in the peanut gallery” are extensions of the name…” (press release)
