GAVIN BROWN had a solid across-the-board hit when he showed a ‘light-weight’ installation by URS FISCHER in last year’s DEC 2006/MIAMI BASEL FAIR. A beautifully conceived installation, that could be packed up in one carry-on bag (almost) – it stole the show & everybodies imagination – and was covered in every single report on that particular fair – said with no exaggeration.
. . . here is an excerpt from the PETER SCHJELDAHL article, ‘TEMPTATIONS OF THE FAIR’/’Miami virtue and vice’ – which ran in THE NEW YORKER of DEC 25, 2006 – and which you can still find online, in its entirety, here !!
” . . . EXACTLY one work drew raves form art people who still crave audacity: the New York dealer Gavin Brown left his large space almost bare but for a crumpled cigarette pack (Camels, perhaps to evoke the Middle East) which attached by a fishing line to an apparatus high overhead, slowly and hypnotically flew above or skittered along the floor. Conceived by the Swiss artist Urs Fischer, this squandering of prime showroom real estate on the trashed container of an addictive product was a smart insult to the occasion, though an awfully mild one. (The piece sold for a hundred and sixty thousand dollars)…”

the piece was in an edition of 3 & reportedly all three sold.
if that was audacious – well, what word to use for: ‘you’ !!
one thing is for sure – URS FISCHER is a major artist, this is what kind of thinking it takes – to be considered a major artist in NYC in 2007 & one other thing is for definite sure – he sure ain’t no one-trick pony.
the buzz is that GAVIN and Urs are hoping to sell the concept of the installation – ‘you’ – to be repeated in another major exhibition space – such as a museum.
some people are saying that the exhibit is called – ‘you’ – because when you clamber down into the bottom of the raw – pit – you – are – the – exhibit.

URS FISHER actually tore up !! the WEST VILLAGE gallery, that is the gallery floor, removing tons of concrete. and leaving the raw remains as the exhibit to prowl, ponder and .. most definitely … MAKE HISTORY. if you are in New York, and you miss this – you’re are a real loser. It’s the most exciting thing to happen on the art scene – since the RIRKRIT TIRAVANIJA/GORDON MATTA CLARK installation at Zwirner last Spring – except it’s the real thing ! – not a reconstruction. if you miss this, the first time around, – never !! let anybody know – you’ll never be able to live it down !
no wonder Gavin is grinning.
. . that’s legendary dealer TONY SHAFRAZI on the left, mega mega collector PETER BRANT, center, and GAVIN BROWN, on the right at the opening. Tony Shafrazi and Peter Brant were asking Gavin how he talked his landlord into letting him do this . ….
Supposedly they had a backhoe in there, that they got into the building, through the street facing building-high windows. we believe that ! Gavin had the gallery clamped down tight, during the excavation – but rumors were flying about major site construction, or rather deconstruction, as it turned out – as tons of concrete and debris, being stockpiled up for removal was observed all week preceding the opening. and then, wow – what a shock!
The gallery entrance was totally re-constructed. Visitors have to first stoop down and pass through a small entry way – just like Alice in Wonderland – so you couldn’t see the scope of the work – until you got through that tiny entrance and then there was a rocky anteroom and then, there was: boom – this amazing raw deconstruction – that looked so huge, it was hard to remember the scale of the gallery beforehand. It was also completely raw. and you really needed hiking boots. (they are going to have some serious issues with crowd control – better get there as soon as you can – before word gets, out, mainstream – it’s also quite realistic to imagine that the site might actually get shut down due to an actual injury/or the site crumbling down altogether – to the extent that entry does really become – way too dangerous!)
in fact, there was an innocuous typed sheet of regular white copy paper that stated: “IMPORTANT NOTICE TO GALLERY VISITORS” – attached to the entrance wall, which read:
“This artwork installation by Urs Fischer has intentionally been left in a raw and unsafe condition, with no provision for safe entry/exit or safe proximity.
The installation is physically dangerous and inherently involves the risk of serious injury or death. Access is granted to you entirely at your risk.
By approaching or entering the installation you assume sole responsibility for any and all risk of injury, death or damage, and you release the gallery and the artist, and all persons or companies affliliated, associated with, or acting on behalf of either of them, from any and all liability.”

SHAWN REED grew up in rural Iowa, and is currently pursuing his MFA at the University of Iowa. He has shown his work in New York, Chicago, Milwaukee, and Tokyo.
“His band Raccoo-oo-oon has toured the United States and Europe and he has personally made Iowa City a key destination for touring punk and noise musicians. Reed also runs a small music label called Night People which specializes in limited edition cassette tapes . . ”
He makes his own frames with his dad, who is a carpenter, and he does the banner embroidery with a modified vintage 50’s SINGER sewing machine.
SOFIA DOMAGA is a visiting artist from Berlin.
In addition to the artwork, which is displayed on the specially hand painted walls – for this exhibit, some of Shawn Reed’s small handmade books of drawing ($6) and hand colored T Shirts ($30) are for sale. . . Hanna tells us .. “His one-of-a-kind, silk-screened shirts can be seen in rainbow colors on the bodies of underground music fans across the world” – we believe it !!!

. . . while we were searching for the STEVEN PARRINO PHOTOS – we happened across these photos, taken in Oct 2004, of an early 2003 ALFREDO MARTINEZ PRISON DRAWING smuggled out of prison through the U.S. POSTAL SERVICES – i.e. the regular mail – which is why it’s got all those fold marks – it arrived at the Lower East Side – artlovers office – in a 8 x 10 in. manilla envelope.
It depicts Alfredo as he saw himself, as he was strapped down to a gurney – going through forced feeding, in jail – the MDC (Metropolitan Detention Center) – in Manhattan. Alfredo was put away for a good couple of years for forging JEAN MICHEL BASQUIAT paintings. (and successfully selling them on the open market !!)
Being a control freak, and an ‘art diva’ in his own ‘humble ways’, and thus, initially unable to deal with incarceration – he went on a hunger strike for quite a few months, supposedly because they would not let him make art. (a little dicey – since his main chief d-oeuvre/ and subject matter is making – working – guns out of recycled materials, no less). Needless to say the authorities finally figured out he wasn’t dangerous and put him to work in the .. KITCHEN !! – which solved that problem. (hunger strikes)
Alfredo used foodstuffs from the kitchen supplies, i.e. little bags of coffee and jello packages, to come up with color pigments to draw with, and a fellow (Russian) inmate showed him how to make sturdy homemade drawing paper out of torn book pages – or – in this case – using letters he was receiving from friends – mixed with flour paste. Alfredo rose to the occasion and switched subject matter – and started making portraits, for the first time – first of himself – being force fed – and then later turned to making portraits, of his fellow inmates – a ploy that catapulted him back on top of the social heap in prison – no mean feat – as being seen as a prisoner with some very threatening skills (i.e. being able to manufacture homemade guns or weapons – out of anything, and we mean a-n-y-t-h-i–n-g) – he was in lock down with some pretty heavy characters.

last photo of STEVEN PARRINO, taken at the Oct 7, 2006 opening of, ‘Plan 9’ – the last show he produced, at TEAM GALLERY (Chelsea). Following the success of this show, he went out and bought a brand new HARLEY, which he fatally crashed, a block from his home, in Brooklyn, on New Year’s Day 2005.
