‘Sin Coyote’ / ‘Without Guide’ . . took place at the very cool, and fiercely indie / independent & artist-run . . ‘DRESS SHOP’ gallery.
Located in an old, but cavernous storefront space in Bushwick / it was more of an ever-changing collective / project in feeling, but in fact it was founded & run by / curated by . . Emmanuel Limon, himself.
it is now very sadly closed.
a big loss for NYC, and the art community as a whole. it was a very hardcore, authentic, diverse and . . innovative venue.
very cutting edge / & way ahead-of-the-curve, in many ways.
it’s a really sad commentary on the art scene here, that it closed.

‘SPECIAL FX’ . .
“features works that explore pattern, optical illusion, and the art of Dazzlement.”
“During WW1 a team of artists and military strategists conceived of a new way to camouflage naval vessels, known as ‘DAZZLE CAMOUFLAGE’. Instead of blending in like typical camouflage, D.C. overwhelmed enemies with overlapping patterns, contrasting colors and optical illusions. German U-Boat operators had difficulty identifying the type of naval vessel they were targeting and its course of movement.
At present, D.C. remains an influential aesthetic in art and design. Though no longer weaponized, the physical sensation of dazzlement can be pleasurable, unnerving, and even a tad painful. The artists in this exhibition similarly harness a combination of pattern and optical illusion in their work, as they both create and destroy systems of form and color, our eyes as viewers become overwhelmed or .. dazzles.” (!!!)
