 on the huge east wall of the gallery.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Ryan___6.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"Ryan # 6\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nMr. McGinley started his career off with &#8211; off-the-cuff club-kid &#038; skater polaroids !! so in some ways this was a conservative departure, technique or format-wise. but essentially, and most importantly, portrait-wise: NOT !!<br \/>\nhis photos are always just absolutely downright compelling, and there is no 2 ways about it.<br \/>\nafter trashing the current MOMA show for its cheesy, gratuitous and see-me-nakedness jerkiness &#8211; talk about irrelevant wannabes &#8211; the next show up for us &#8211; is nakedness by McGinley !! and it soars. it takes off. it has mystery &#038; depth. insight. edge.<br \/>\nthe art world ain&#8217;t it a bitch.<br \/>\nwhen it comes down to it &#8211; its all about the talent. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Ryan___7___Scott_Hug.jpg\" width=\"337\" height=\"450\" alt=\"ryan # 7\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nin the quickly growing crowd &#8211; we spot &#8211; SCOTT HUG.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Ryan___9___Sean_Vegezzi.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"Ryan  - Sean\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nand young street\/subway graff culture photographer &#8211; SEAN VEGEZZI with his friend, CLARA.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Ryan___8_01.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"Ryan # 8A\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\neach, and every photograph was unique and striking.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Ryan___10.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"Ryan # 10\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nit was fun to watch the opening crowd observe the wall of black and white photos &#8211; even though the crowd got threateningly large &#8211; and there was no organized security or crowd control whatsoever &#8211; it was always like a parting wave &#8211; in the shallow space in front of the wall of black and white photos.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Ryan___11___IO_PHOTO.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"ryan # 11\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nthere was also a smaller  grouping of portraits in the back room &#8211; where we spied &#8211; IO !!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Ryan___12___IO.jpg\" width=\"337\" height=\"450\" alt=\"Ryan # 12\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nand then who waltzes in, but IO herself &#8211; in the flesh !!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Ryan___13___Matt_.jpg\" width=\"337\" height=\"450\" alt=\"ryan # 13\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\namong the crowd another McGinley &#8211; subject &#8211;  also named &#8211; MATT.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Ryan___14___matt_photo.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"Ryan # 14\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nMatt&#8217;s portrait, a full length nude &#8211; was also to be found in that small back room.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/RYan___17.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"Ryan # 17\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nback in the  main exhibit room &#8211; the crowd was cheek to cheek.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Ryan___16.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"ryan # 16\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nit was impossible to view the several large scale photos.<br \/>\n(you can see them on the gallery website).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Ryan___18.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"Ryan # 18\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\noutside &#8211; the crowd was taking over the entire Soho block !!<br \/>\nno lines, no list, no security &#8211; it was bottle-necked at the one entry\/exit doorway &#8211; but very polite and orderly, I think mostly  in deference to the crowd&#8217;s great respect for the artist.<br \/>\n(Jose Friere, the gallery&#8217;s owner &#8211; was nowhere in sight).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Ryan___19.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"Ryan # 19\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nthe opening night crowd &#8211; out on the street.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Ryan___20___Don___Rachel.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"Ryan # 20\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nin the crowd &#8211; Tooya\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nLEIF RITCHEY and TOOYA !!<br \/>\nLief has a show up now at THE JOURNAL GALLERY in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Ryan___22__firetruck.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"Ryan # 22\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nso half-way through the opening, with a crowd like that &#8211; no surprise  &#8211; an NYFD FIRETRUCK showed up  !!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Ryan___23.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"ryan # 23\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nbut even with some kind of captain or supervisor &#8211; in a white visor &#8211; they couldn&#8217;t get though to the doorway.<br \/>\nthey were actually way too polite. and were seen &#8211; asking all the pretty young girls &#8211; what was going on ?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Ryan___24.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"ryan # 24\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nso then they called in the cops. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Ryan___25.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"ryan # 25\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\neven they couldn&#8217;t shut this block party down !! compared to other situations, with way smaller crowds in front of way smaller galleries in Brooklyn, and even the Lower East Side &#8211; these cops wore kid gloves. what is it &#8211; about Soho and its super rich tenanted streets ?<br \/>\nso finally they had to call in a specialized cop car that was equipped with a battlefield &#8216;warfare&#8217; sound system &#8211; that emitted such a huge and nausea-generating aggressive sound &#8211; the crowd was forced to slowly give ground to the &#8216;armed&#8217; enforcers &#8211; and the show finally got shut down.<\/p>\n<p>PHOTOS: NANCY SMITH<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>RYAN McGINLEY &#8211;
