Miyagi was intrigued by the story&#8217;s use of female characters or more broadly the feminine to denote powerlessness and abjection and parallel chosen states of masochism and abasement in relation to race and the homosexual.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; &#8230; Miyagi&#8217;s  &#8216;The Cocktail Party&#8217; is about the floating, diffuse and painful yet still experimental nature of identity so that in the face of reticence, one becomes a brief description.&#8221; &#8211; <em>GALLERY PRESS RELEASE\/ESSAY<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Futoshi___3.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"Futoshi # 3\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nit&#8217;s also extremely visual, to a point of silence.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Futoshi___4.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"futoshi # 4\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nman-made materials are deconstructed. to re-become a re-definition of craft. in reverse.<br \/>\nand therefore &#8211; emerges &#8211; as a visual clue to the sad story that Futoshi tells, or fashions, really &#8211; out of .. small tell-tale 3-D tableaus.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Futoshi___5.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"futoshi # 5\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nthat are beautiful in their own right. just as is &#8211; even, if there there were no binding story line.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Futoshi___6.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"Futoshi # 6\" class=\"centered\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Futoshi___7.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"Futoshi # 7\" class=\"centered\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Futoshi___8.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"Futoshi # 8\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\na feeling of snakes, and evil charm overwhelms the fabric&#8217;s original function and gaiety.<br \/>\ncapture and trailing submission.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Futoshi___9.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"Futoshi # 9\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nbottomline:  headless &#8211;  animal vases.<br \/>\nFUTOSHI MIYAGI, &#8216;Welcome&#8217;, 2009. Ceramic figures, flowers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Futoshii___10.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"futoshi # 10\" class=\"centered\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Futoshi___11.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"futoshi # 11\" class=\"centered\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Futoshi___12.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"futoshi # 12\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nlet&#8217;s step back in time, in a real sense:<br \/>\nFUTOSHI MIYAGI and DANIEL REICH welcomed us to &#8216;The Cocktail Party&#8217; installation &#8211; a couple of days before the actual opening !!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Futoshi___13.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"Futoshi # 13\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nFUTOSHI MIYAGI, &#8216;Cocktail Party&#8217;, glasses, ceramics.<br \/>\namidst the small installation chaos &#8211; a simple wooden table with a selection of glassware &#8211; strikes a pose.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/futoshi___27_glasses.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"futoshi # 27\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\na contrarian in spirit &#8211; I&#8217;m always attracted to situations that challenge photographic rendering !!<br \/>\nand the beauty of contrasts. glass surfaces and varied vessel shapes. refraction and the holding volume. the sense of a fleeting moment &#8211; a fleeting beauty. how is it conveyed by such a simple arrangement?<br \/>\nhow does a small array of glassware say something about hospitality ? vulnerability. sexuality.<br \/>\nthe tiniest moments in the day. the frailest transparencies\/the chime of visual codes and relationships.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Futoshi___28_glasses___2.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"Futoshi # 28\" class=\"centered\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Futoshi___14.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"futoshi # 14\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nFutoshi Miyagi, &#8216;Heiwa Street #1 (Sensei)&#8217;, 2009. polyester, cotton.<\/p>\n<p>at first encounter, I  perceived these displays as simply visual &#8216;wonderments&#8217;, oddities on the on-going road of new art experience. a kind of craft curiosity &#8211; a backwards, decontructed, &#8216;reverse&#8217; craft !! for strange times &#8211; then I realized, as clues of the sad narrative seeped in &#8211; they were much more loaded, emotive symbols. <\/p>\n<p>they were  about cultural experience, gone haywire.<br \/>\npersonal experience, societal clash. prejudice, &#8220;rural mythology and American occupiers&#8221; &#8211; Japan and the USA  &#8211; domination\/isolation &#8211; war history &#8211; cultural history interwoven &#8211; deconstructed !! silently. softly. but completely shredded. while alive. and pinned down. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Futoshi___15.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"futoshi # 15\" class=\"centered\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Futoshi___16.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"futoshi # 16\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nREESE&#8217;S &#8211; American commercial candy product. deconstructed. ironically into a contemporary Japanese craft form ?<br \/>\nor, at any rate a visual symbol. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Futoshi___17.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"Futoshi # 17\" class=\"centered\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/Futoshi___18.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"Futoshi # 18\" class=\"centered\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/photos\/futoshi___19.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" alt=\"futoshi # 19\" class=\"centered\" \/><br \/>\nFUTOSHI MIYAGI, &#8216;Untitled (Dad)&#8217;, 2009.
