Baker explores American landscape painting’s myths of expansion and freedom, and its conjuring of sentiment and the sublime.
He relates its strategies to those of the contemporary media, refracting scenes gleaned from television and the Internet through the lens of Romanticism. His new paintings, (and some manipulated/collaged digital prints), exhibit a dramatic high gloss sheen that is at once seductive and distancing; they act as both screens and mirrors.”
for more info, individual works & installation shots, see: JIMMY BAKER/FOXY PRODUCTION WEBSITE

PHOTOS FROM THE OPENING RECEPTION, FRIDAY OCT 17, 2008

the new and larger, FOXY PRODUCTION GALLERY, a couple of doors west, at 623 West 27th Street.

JIMMY BAKER and MICHAEL GILLESPIE

JIMMY BAKER and his wife, JIL BAKER, an architect at Cincinnati, Ohio firm – MICHAEL SCHUSTER ASSOCIATES.
(one of their specialties is designing state of the art fire stations.)

on the left: JIMMY BAKER, ‘AID’ 2008, and at right, JIMMY BAKER, ‘AZADI’, 2008

a closer look: JIMMY BAKER – ‘AID’ and ‘AZADI’.
both pieces are archival digital prints on white lucite, 24 x 18 in.
