“While popular interest in America’s past was sparked by the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial exposition and promoted by the spread of the arts and crafts movement in the late 19th century, it was the colonial revival of the early 20th century that truly inspired women to search their attics and basements for antique quilts and, failing that, to sew their own interpretations of the old-time bedcovers using natural, unadorned materials in simple designs. Museum exhibitions, magazine articles, and even advertisements for household products encouraged Americans to decorate in what was becoming the unofficial national style, and cotton patchwork quilt were viewed as the appropriate accessories for the new decorating mode that drew its inspiration from a romanticized American past.” – press release<\/p>\n
