when DAN ASHER exhibited his first shot at gaining some attention in a long time, in the FALL of 2005 at Passerby – nobody noticed.<\/p>\n
artlovers wrote at the time: “Dan Asher’s show ‘BIRD OF PREY’ was one of the best shows of FALL 2005, which, for no good reason, slipped by under the mainstream radar. ‘BIRD OF PREY’ was a one man compilation of photographs that ranged from stupendous iceberg and aurora borealis landscapes to extreme and violent illegal ‘backyard’ wrestling events that flourish in the mid-west – with a few Middle America portraits thrown in for good measure.” but, now he has work up at WHITE COLUMNS – and somebody, very mainstream – took note !!<\/p>\n in a review of their current offerings – no less a critic than ROBERTA SMITH, wrote in today’s NEW YORK TIMES ART In REVIEW SECTION (FRIDAY, OCT 3, 2008) . . . P.S. DAN was so nice to write us a little note correcting Roberta’s review: he didn’t<\/em> use a cellphone. let alone one in motion !! – (she must have ROB PRUITT’S show – ‘iPhotos’ – now up at GBE – stuck on the brain !!).

\n” . . . but the general reticence (of the main exhibit a curatorial presentation by B. WURTZ) is disrupted by two other shows: the raucous quilt paintings of VIOLETTE ALBY and a 25-year survey of the alternately Minimalist and Expressionist paintings and drawings of the talented DAN ASHER.
\nBut Mr. Asher brings everything to a gentle fade-out with a recent irresistibly musical video titled ‘Moonscape’, in which a succession of blurry photographs of a moonlit ocean finds its ideal accompaniment in LIZ DURRETT singing ‘The Sea a Dream’. It is amazing what can be accomplished with a cellphone in motion”.

\nDan says: …”bye the way, the video wasn’t shot with a cellphone camera, it was shot at the Jersey Shore last summer on TOM JARMUSCH’S not-so-vintage canon camcorder with a slow shutter speed” and, goes on in his indomitable way… “when next I see the esteemed R. SMITH, I’ll tell her, half in jest, that my cellphone actually doesn’t have camera\/nor a video component which in the eyes of the judiciously meticulous reviewer of the ‘paper of record’ would make its (the video’s) existence – all the more indigenously amazing (double grin !!).”<\/p>\n
