Using fabric, paper, plastic, clay and metal, Deya crochets, weaves and sews for us a fantastical world of both underwater and land walking creatures alongside of sculptures of environments in which these creatures might frolic . . .
. . . ‘Dome City’ is a paper sculpture made while “under the influence of the city” of New York, tiny drawings stacked upon each other with a blue inner glow at the center. Its protrusion from the wall pulls the viewer in to join the city and inspect the individuality of the drawings . . . and,
Deya has woven giant ‘Jellyfish’ in plastic, from plastic bags which float above, daring the viewer to play in the tentacles.

Born and raised in Virginia, Deya is a self-taught artist who has shown work at Nature in Charlottesville, Nocturnal and the Handmade Bazaar in Portland, as well as HaNnA Gallery in Tokyo.”
– PRESS RELEASE

UP-DATE: MONDAY MARCH 3, 2008 – 5:47 PM

Frankie’s soiree for DEYA was just as fun – as we thought it – would be – here’s some pix:

DEYA RAMSDEN and FRANKIE MARTIN at the ‘Sugar Free’ opening, Beebop Gallery, Brooklyn.
