{"id":45997,"date":"2022-11-18T09:58:56","date_gmt":"2022-11-18T14:58:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/?p=45997"},"modified":"2022-11-18T09:58:56","modified_gmt":"2022-11-18T14:58:56","slug":"luke-murphy-vs-moriko-mori-more-light-chart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/the-bomb\/2022\/11\/18\/luke-murphy-vs-moriko-mori-more-light-chart\/","title":{"rendered":"~LUKE MURPHY vs MORIKO MORI  . . &#8216;MORE LIGHT !&#8217; \/ CHART"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>the thing about &#8216;light&#8217; . . .<br \/>\nis that, more than its myriad manifestations, infinite meanings &#038; fabulous range of radiance \/<br \/>\nas well as: motion, fluidity, and don&#8217;t forget . . . shadows !!<br \/>\nis the fact that it both . . propels, informs &#038; yet foils &#8211; the would-be photographer.<br \/>\nthis <strong>is <\/strong>a show &#8211; to view in person.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;MORE LIGHT !&#8217; \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/chart-gallery.com\">CHART GALLERY, TRIBECA<\/a> . . .  up thru JAN 7, 2023.<\/p>\n<p><strong>case in point:<\/strong> <strong>LUKE MURPHY vs. MARIKO MORI. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I know Luke&#8217;s piece<\/strong>, &#8216;STARLIGHT, WARM AND COOL&#8217;, must twinkle, rumble, roam, flood, and flicker,<br \/>\nbecause I know his work very, very well \/ but, a still photo &#8211; leaves us confronting a big, big mystery as to how this piece is &#8216;programmed&#8217;, how it &#8216;plays&#8217; out &#8211;  on its computer coded animated matrix.<br \/>\neven a video clip &#8211; doesn&#8217;t truly capture the work, as the LED color fights the camera all the way.<br \/>\nthis <strong>is<\/strong> a world of condensed, animated, literal light &#8211; and, it doesn&#8217;t hold its breath for no one.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;warm and cool&#8221; . . is a hint of the incandescent color burst journey.<br \/>\nso is . . &#8216;starlight&#8217; \/<br \/>\nbut with its finite, straight mechanical borders \/ those real-world hard steel edges,<br \/>\nit&#8217;s more like a &#8216;slice of sky&#8217; &#8211; than a  . . cosmos.<br \/>\nmore a signal &#8211; than a planetary pulse.  <\/p>\n<p>which compels the comparison &#8211; to Mariko Mori.<br \/>\nher work in a strange, curious way, is<strong> not<\/strong> animated &#8211; and yet it speaks to cosmic vision \/<br \/>\nbubbling up . . new baby planets ? cosmic plant life ?<br \/>\n&#8220;genesis&#8221;  . . is surely a clue. <\/p>\n<p>so, do I mean: Luke Murphy \/ signals<strong> vs<\/strong> Mariko Mori  \/ conception ?<br \/>\nall I know is, I see: YIN YANG.<br \/>\nstraight vs round.<br \/>\nthe animated LED light pulses of Luke&#8217;s work &#8211; are contained, both by their programmed matrix, and steel structure, even repeating &#8211;  in a loop.<br \/>\nwhereas, the stationary composition of Mariko&#8217;s &#8216;painting&#8217; \/ ironically conjures up: infinite motion. birth. and cosmos.<br \/>\nYIN YANG. as surely as the cat chases &#8211; its tail.<\/p>\n<p>if anything &#8216;cosmic&#8217;,  is to be said about Luke&#8217;s work, his LED creation of &#8216;scripted&#8217; light \/ resembles more a man-made, or another unknown &#8216;sentient&#8217; . . .  construction:<br \/>\nI&#8217;m thinking a huge, huge spinning spacecraft \/ angular and skinny, far far off in the deep deep sky.<\/p>\n<p>whereas Mariko is all femme: round, and organic . . as a pregnant belly.<br \/>\nwith a chaotic, infinite illusion \/ vision . . radiatng from the stationary painted surface . . <\/p>\n<p>Mariko&#8217;s piece feels more organic in nature \/ its light is . . plastic: opalescence.<br \/>\nan artist&#8217;s . . . skillful conjuring.<br \/>\na planet&#8217;s surface &#8211; close up &#038; personal ?<br \/>\nthis painterly dome &#8211; &#8216;feels&#8217; no more man-made \/ than a bubble on the surface of a pond.<br \/>\nthere is serenity here, but it feels deceptive to me.<br \/>\nin a word: bubble bubble \/ trouble trouble.<br \/>\nit feels so minute, and yet so vast &#8211; and it can burst in the very next frame.<\/p>\n<p>and, yet Luke&#8217;s &#8216;Starlight&#8217; &#8211;  also comes &#8211; home to us \/<br \/>\nLED deli signs, neon signs . .  light up every major city \/ and metropolis.<br \/>\nas well as, stadiums, concert venues etc. etc. \/<br \/>\nprojecting text info, typefaces, and the intermediate abstract &#8216;patterns&#8217; swirling, a visual necessity for the comprehension of the &#8216;message&#8217; \/<br \/>\npulsing colored light to capture &#8211; your mind, and mind-set.<\/p>\n<p>look at the Luke Murphy <strong>LED DELI digital banner<\/strong>, &#8216;RESIST&#8217;  &#8211; that plays across the top of this page: and, blow it up &#8211; as big as your mind can imagine.<br \/>\nand, then  take <strong>one<\/strong> minute . . to ponder how <strong>I<\/strong> can make colors light up, and patterns twirl, and words flow: words of action, no less !!
