{"id":43423,"date":"2021-08-08T08:35:59","date_gmt":"2021-08-08T13:35:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/?p=43423"},"modified":"2021-08-15T11:47:51","modified_gmt":"2021-08-15T16:47:51","slug":"dan-mandelbaum-ceramic-figures-marvin-gardens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/the-bomb\/2021\/08\/08\/dan-mandelbaum-ceramic-figures-marvin-gardens\/","title":{"rendered":"~DAN MANDELBAUM \/ CERAMIC FIGURES \/ MARVIN GARDENS \/ feel the heat !!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>UP-DATE: SUN AUG 15, 2021 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>well, maybe &#8216;playful&#8217; &#8211; isn&#8217;t exactly the right word.<br \/>\njust go ahead &#038; substitute . . &#8216;terrifying&#8217; !!<\/p>\n<p>invoking the sun to come out and play is <strong>not<\/strong> &#8211; what this summer is all about.<br \/>\nmore like: less sun, more moderation \/ more awareness. more industrial \/ cultural mindset . . change.<br \/>\nwith all the huge wild fires raging out of control across the globe &#8211; with great destruction \/ and, artists hate destruction, archival, historic, and present endeavors \/ though p.s. ceramics are pretty much indestructible, by the way \/ raging fires destroying everything in their path &#038; all around the globe, melting ice caps &#038; resultant extreme storms &#038; rising sea levels, interior river floods \/ and, now of course, with basically war &#8211; if not just a fraught retreat \/ in a very hot country consuming the headlines,<br \/>\ninvoking the sun gods to come out &#038; play &#8211; is tempting your fate.<br \/>\nsomething New Yorkers had considered themselves lucky to be not vulnerable to, situated where they were, as in <strong>not<\/strong> flooded, <strong>not<\/strong> on fire, and <strong>not<\/strong> at war.<\/p>\n<p>though seriously &#8211; all you millennial creatives out there \/ this <strong>is<\/strong> an island, and it will go under \/ or parts of it will  \/ for sure, at some point.  <\/p>\n<p>but, the average New Yorker &#8211; civilian day warrior was blissful, and feeling lucky: they were <strong>not<\/strong> being challenged by a fire or flood path \/ which seemed <strong>totally<\/strong> someone else&#8217;s problem \/ until our daily heat index . .  went completely over-the-top of what humans can safely function in \/ and we went helplessly from a Heat Advisory &#8211; to an Extreme Heat Advisory, day after day.<\/p>\n<p>yeah: &#8216;sunny-side-up&#8217; &#8211;  is <strong>not<\/strong> the word, just one week later.<\/p>\n<p>more like: feel the heat !! the sun is consuming us, and whose fault &#8211; is that ?<\/p>\n<p>though, <strong>still<\/strong> a big part of me  \/ is reading this sun doll \/ ceramic doodle . . &#8211; as &#8216;joyful&#8217;. even if that&#8217;s just &#8211; nostalgic ?<br \/>\nor, wishful ?<br \/>\nthe sun&#8217;s dance &#8211; is a wonderful thing \/ it&#8217;s <strong>our<\/strong> climate that has changed.<\/p>\n<p>OPEN TODAY &#8211; SUN AUG 8 \/ 1 &#8211; 5 PM<\/p>\n<p>what ?<br \/>\ndoesn&#8217;t everybody have a &#8216;sunny-side up&#8217; \/ doll collection ?!!<\/p>\n<p>DAN MANDELBAUM &#8211; &#8216;MIGHT BE THE LAST SHOW&#8217;<br \/>\nJULY 14 &#8211; AUG 22, 2021<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/marvin-gardens.org\/\">MARVIN GARDENS<\/a>, 1534 DECATUR ST., RIDGEWOOD, NY 11385<br \/>\nHRS: SUN \/ 1-5 PM<br \/>\nOR BY APPT ONLY<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Dan-Mandelbaum-Marvin-Gardens.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Dan-Mandelbaum-Marvin-Gardens.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"595\" height=\"720\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-43424\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Dan-Mandelbaum-Marvin-Gardens.jpg 595w, https:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Dan-Mandelbaum-Marvin-Gardens-248x300.jpg 248w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 595px) 100vw, 595px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIMAGE VIA <a href=\"http:\/\/marvin-gardens.org\/\">MARVIN GARDENS GALLERY <\/a><\/p>\n<p>DAN MANDELBAUM . . . clay figure.<br \/>\nlooks to be  smallish, but hefty. looking like it has some grit &#038; some weight \/ very hot fired &#038; extremely well glazed . . it has the shimmer of watercolor. and a dance of playfulness.<br \/>\ndefinite more cosmic &#8211; in mind-set \/ as opposed to  . . deep hippie.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m wondering how it remains balanced on the pedestal. is it attached ?<\/p>\n<p>DAN MANDELBAUM, &#8216;Chromaric Figure&#8217;, 2021.<br \/>\nglazed ceramic \/ 21 x 14 x 9 in.<\/p>\n<p>Brooklyn-based, DAN MANDELBAUM  . . graduated from PRATT INSTITUTE, BROOKLYN, NY.
