In the summer of 2019, it was hard to miss the semi-centennial celebrations<br \/>\nof the Apolllo 11 moon landing. Museum exhibits, cinematic features, daily news coverage, and social media buzz kept much of the American public occupied with swiping, tapping, and clicking gestures in commemoration of the <strong>emblematic <\/strong>moment.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;The moon landing on July 20, 1969 was as much a sign of <strong>human desire <\/strong> as it was a feat of scientific<br \/>\n&#038; technical accomplishment.&#8221;<br \/>\n~JOHANNES DeYOUNG<\/p>\n<p>my <strong>biggest<\/strong> take-away from this summer&#8217;s media coverage of the 1969 Apollo moon landing . .<br \/>\nwas the incredible fact that . . the &#8220;iPhone in your pocket has over 100,000 times the processing power of the computer that landed men on the moon 50 years ago&#8221;.<br \/>\n~Real Clear Science<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/banks-of-screens-moon.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/banks-of-screens-moon.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"288\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-41435\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nthere were banks of screens \/ rows upon rows of men working screens . .<br \/>\nit was more of an &#8216;industrial&#8217; era setting, than a digital one. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/moon-monitors.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/moon-monitors.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"357\" height=\"288\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-41436\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nmonitoring all aspects of the mission.<br \/>\nand I do mean: men \/<br \/>\nthough a handful of the top manager\/supervisor\/scientists . . were women.<br \/>\nnotably: SUSAN FINLEY performed trajectory computations for the rocket launch, <strong>by hand<\/strong>.<br \/>\nMARGARET HAMILTON was the lead Apollo flight software designer.<br \/>\nDOROTHY VAUGHAN, &#8220;the first black section lead at Langley Research Center \/ she managed the all-black<br \/>\nWest Area Computing Unit.&#8221;<br \/>\nsource: Science Friday<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/3-d-mock-ups.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/3-d-mock-ups.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"288\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-41446\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nI was <strong>struck<\/strong> by all the (skilled) 3-D &#8211; mock-ups !!<br \/>\nso retro !!
