\nRoom 146 at Trumbull & Porter Hotel, in Detroit – as part of . . ‘Young Curators, New Ideas V’,
\na vetted program of Indie curators \/ part of Detroit Art Week \/ DAW . . which runs JULY 17 – 21, 2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This 2nd edition of DAW has expanded to include 5 days of programing \/ 36 exhibition openings \/ 14 studio visits \/
\n13 performances \/ 8 panel discussions \/ as well as 11 special programs . . featuring 150+ artists & community members.
\nDAW . . is open to the public & includes both free & ticketed events. <\/p>\n

‘Young Curators, New Ideas V’ . . will feature exhibitions presented by 12 independent curators – which will “transform” 12 hotel rooms into
\nmini contemporary art galleries. ‘YCNI V’ . . aims to “shine a light on the cultural, artistic, social and political transformations initiated by the creative & curatorial practices of Black, POC, women, LGBTQ+ and gender-nonconforming individuals.” (DAW) <\/p>\n

YULIA TPOCHIY’S exhibit, ‘Embodiers’ . . .<\/strong><\/p>\n

will present (currently) Detroit-based, metal-smith, performance, and object artist,
\nLAUREN KALMAN’S diverse<\/strong>, often craft-based & pretty much . . ‘out-spoken’ work platforms . .
\n. . including jewelry objects that reference erotic zones in the body titled, ‘Icons of the Flesh’. <\/p>\n

” . . consisting of video,<\/strong> costumes, mask forms, installations and interactive jewelry . . .
\nKalman uses craft mediums and decorative objects as a strategic choice. Minimalism, intellectual purity, health industry, and white male privilege are linked historically, and that link was codified aesthetically throughout the modernist period. Body adornment as decoration can be a necessary interruption to the myopic intellectual order of the established lineages of art and design and established cultural norms more broadly.
\nThe legacy of modernism, minimalism, and the high arts (sculpture & painting), have historically privileged the cerebral over the corporeal. Crafts <\/strong>, in contrast have long been associated with domestic, bodily, and female.
\nAs Kalman’s work deals largely with the female body, it calls upon historical associations with craft<\/strong> and the feminine.”

LAUREN KALMAN . . <\/strong>is a visual artist whose practice “is invested in contemporary craft, video, photography, and performance.”
\nthrough her work, she investigates beauty, adornment, body image, and the built<\/strong> environment.
\nRaised in the Midwest, Kalman completed her MFA in art 7 technology from the Ohio State University & earned a BFA with a focus in Metals from Massachusetts College of Art. Exhibiting and lecturing internationally, she has been awarded several important residencies including Haystack, and also at the Santa Fe Art Institute.
