screen looping in the window . . was a great touch \/ running through great archival images,<br \/>\nthat helped bring the history alive \/ and nail all the right &#8211;  references. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/K-Haring-4.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/K-Haring-4.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36766\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nthe 3 Rs: ROUGH, RAW &#038; RELEVANT<br \/>\ninside, the rawness of the venue &#8211; added to the impact of the historic work.<br \/>\nthere&#8217;s nothing that beats seeing the original, even if just a section.<\/p>\n<p>2 original panels, (from a heavy metal fence &#8211; that ran around the FDR Drive).<br \/>\nKEITH HARING, &#8216;Untitled (FDR NY) #3 &#038; #4&#8217;, spray enamel paint on metal, 48 x 204 x 3-1\/4 in.  <\/p>\n<p>can&#8217;t help but also note: how those &#8216;KEITH HARING-FDR 1984&#8217; colors \/ are so in fashion. right now.<br \/>\nred, black. white.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/K-Haring-TV-emoji.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/K-Haring-TV-emoji.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1056\" height=\"792\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36768\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nthis was the 80s. there was no social media. there were no cellphones.<br \/>\nthis was how you communicated, if you really felt compelled to say . . something.<br \/>\nthough you might call Keith Haring the godfather of  . . the modern emoji.<br \/>\nhis images were bold, simple. animated even though standing still \/ graphic.<br \/>\nbut they touched a common nerve.<br \/>\nthey really set the city . .  on fire.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/K-Haring-rawness-vs-digital.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/K-Haring-rawness-vs-digital.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36769\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nseeing the rawness of the big steel fence that ran along the FDR, was stunning.<br \/>\nstunning, like a bee sting.<br \/>\nthe images just rolled off his tongue onto the gritty belly of the inner city. via spray paint.<br \/>\nit also made you think about the concrete &#8216;bruteness&#8217; of communication, &#038; the collective \/ &#8216;illegal&#8217; street art scene back then, as opposed to the clean-cut \/ non-stop millennial digital stream that flows incessantly online.<br \/>\nnow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/K-Haring-metal-gate.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/K-Haring-metal-gate.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36771\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nthe pop-up exhibit: it def, stopped people in their tracks, for whatever reason.<br \/>\nmeaning: for many reasons.<br \/>\nit was an experience \/ not just a &#8216;4 white walls&#8217; viewing.<br \/>\nit was immediate. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/K-Haring-never-seen-photos.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/K-Haring-never-seen-photos.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36772\" \/><\/a><br \/>\njust around the corner, where the side wall meets the end of the room, was a small array of never-before-seen archival photos by ERIC KROLL.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/K-HARING-unpublished-archival-photos.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/K-HARING-unpublished-archival-photos.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1056\" height=\"792\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36773\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nrare black &#038; white photos of HARING &#038; &#8216;FDR &#8211; 1984&#8217;  . . .<br \/>\nbringing spiritual depth to the pop-up exhibit, in the best of ways. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/K-Haring-books-night-.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/K-Haring-books-night-.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36775\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nthen down the other side was a counter with books, that you could flip through \/ the neon nightlights &#038; bustle of Chinatown, coming through. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/K-Haring-flipping-thru-books-1.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/K-Haring-flipping-thru-books-1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36776\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nin the early 80s, we used to go knife off these chalk pieces and sell them to collectors, who showed up at the openings. we got pretty good money, too.<br \/>\nyou could almost pay a whole year&#8217;s rent, with one.<br \/>\nthe way the Lower East Side was back then, before the real estate got crazy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/K-Haring-books-2.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/K-Haring-books-2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36777\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nthough things started getting dicey, too. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/K-Haring-flipping-thru-books-3.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/K-Haring-flipping-thru-books-3.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"378\" height=\"504\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36778\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nbut that&#8217;s how it was.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/iconic-K-haring.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/iconic-K-haring.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36780\" \/><\/a><br \/>\none of his most iconic images. A true grand-pappy of the emoji.<br \/>\nat his later openings, he had stickers of this image, about 3 x 4 ins. \/ printed on huge rolls, and he used to hand them out.<br \/>\nsomeone else &#8211; can write the paper on what the seemingly simple image &#8211; means.<br \/>\nI just want to say: SWIZZ BEATZ too bad, you missed out, on some real juice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/K-Haring-drawing.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/K-Haring-drawing.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36783\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nno words.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/looking-thru-the-side-window.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/looking-thru-the-side-window.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36784\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nyou can see the mural through the side window on Elizabeth \/ 24\/7.<br \/>\npretty much <strong>just<\/strong> how you walked or drove by the work, integrated into the city, back in the day &#8211;  when it was done.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/looking-thru-the-side-window-.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/looking-thru-the-side-window-.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36786\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nEBONY HAYES, the Martos Gallery director, at center.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Jose-martos-SERVANE-MARY-Veronica-Gonzalez-Penia.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Jose-martos-SERVANE-MARY-Veronica-Gonzalez-Penia.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36788\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nJOSE MARTOS, his wife, artist SERVANE MARY, and filmmaker\/writer VERONICA GONZALEZ PENIA.<br \/>\nMartos was the guy with the vision, who put up this pop-up \/ with all 3 Rs intact.
