{"id":30290,"date":"2016-09-08T09:49:34","date_gmt":"2016-09-08T14:49:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/?p=30290"},"modified":"2016-09-08T10:01:11","modified_gmt":"2016-09-08T15:01:11","slug":"nancy-smith-simon-cerigo-back-in-day-concordia-univ-montreal-mfa-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/the-bomb\/2016\/09\/08\/nancy-smith-simon-cerigo-back-in-day-concordia-univ-montreal-mfa-students\/","title":{"rendered":"~NANCY SMITH, SIMON CERIGO . . back in the day: Concordia Univ,  Montreal MFA students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>yeah, SIMON CERIGO, RIP and I  . .  were <strong>both<\/strong> students at Concordia Univ in the 1970s &#8211; and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guido_Molinari\">GUIDO MOLINARI<\/a> was our teacher.<br \/>\nsee: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=guido+molinari&#038;source=lnms&#038;tbm=isch&#038;sa=X&#038;ved=0ahUKEwjTz_vFgoDPAhVIYyYKHQ8lAQkQ_AUICCgB&#038;biw=1285&#038;bih=732\">GUIDO MOLINARI-images<\/a><\/p>\n<p>to put it in perspective, we were the &#8216;next wave&#8217; generation to follow in the footsteps of LEONARD COHEN. except instead of poetry &#8211; painting, formalist painting &#8211; was the <strong>big<\/strong> scene.<br \/>\nit was very, very &#8216;happening&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>we were &#8216;maudit&#8217; anglophones, so we couldn&#8217;t get too much action re grants &#038; exhibitions  &#8211; because we weren&#8217;t Quebecois &#8216;frenchies&#8217; in our DNA.  at that time, the early 1970s &#8211; that was a<strong> big<\/strong> big issue, so after graduate school, Concordia University, MFA Studio Program (we were part of the first ever graduating class, lol) . . . while, pretty much everyone else split to Toronto or Vancouver &#8211; we split to . .  NEW YORK !!<br \/>\nOF COURSE !!!!<br \/>\nand we <strong>never<\/strong>, ever &#8211; looked back !!!!<\/p>\n<p>Simon used to haunt the legendary Lower East Side &#8211;  Red Bar, and I used to walk the Soho streets with, who else ?
