MARTIN CREED.<br \/>\nthis <strong>was<\/strong> the first time I saw anything by MARTIN CREED, in person.<br \/>\nit was the summer of 2010, it was a real hot summer for art.<br \/>\nbut this screening at GBE  . .  aced it.<\/p>\n<p>it was absolutely jaw-dropping . . presented when GBE first debuted that new annex.<br \/>\nit was so ahead of the usual art game . . it was: SCARY.<\/p>\n<p>oh momma, it was bold. it was <strong>silent<\/strong>. it was huge. it was vast.<br \/>\nit talked to space, and to .. bio-ness. the human condition, the human &#8216;creed&#8217;. and yes, you did feel lost in space.<br \/>\nthe exhibition space was . . that huge and raw.<br \/>\nthe gallery space still retained its original industrial rawness.<\/p>\n<p>the looped footage was so primal, so graphic, so in your face. <\/p>\n<p>it was: scary. <\/p>\n<p>it was everything in 2 mins. that &#8216;GRAVITY&#8217; in 2 hrs .. was NOT.<\/p>\n<p>esp silent, and . . awesome.<\/p>\n<p>GAVIN &#038; CREED vs BULLOCK &#038; CLOONEY, well you know who wins that. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/creed-rising-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/creed-rising-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"creed-rising-#-2\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/creed-rising-2.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/creed-rising-2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nI guess you could  call it .. CREED RISING. it was a loop of you know .. what.<br \/>\nthe force of nature, that opposes gravity. that &#8216;rises&#8217;.<br \/>\nthat keeps us . . going. as a race. reproduction.<br \/>\nit was definite one of the top ten art events . .  I&#8217;ve ever witnessed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/creed-rising-industrial-ra.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/creed-rising-industrial-ra.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"creed-rising--industrial-ra\" width=\"734\" height=\"551\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/creed-rising-industrial-ra.jpg 734w, https:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/creed-rising-industrial-ra-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 734px) 100vw, 734px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nnot that I haven&#8217;t seen a &#8216;dick&#8217; rising in my lifetime.<br \/>\nit was the confluence of factors. esp the rawness of the yet untouched new space.<br \/>\nso industrial vs. the loop: which was so, bio.<br \/>\nthe room would go completely bright, full of natural &#038; artificial light, to stark and completely dark, and the single most important &#8216;cornerstone&#8217; to human welfare . . would loop. no words. no soundtrack.<br \/>\nzero. no adornment of any kind.<br \/>\nI was speechless. JOSH HARRIS and QUIET. ten years ago.<br \/>\nso it was an experience for me, that was both past and present.<br \/>\nand FUTURE ..  with a really big capital &#8216;F&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>I would even say, the &#8216;space&#8217; paintings on the wall facing the huge screen . . which  made  perfect sense, in that context.<br \/>\nthe hugeness of the notion of &#8216;human&#8217; creation vs. the smallness of the actual human &#8216;stab&#8217; at creativity.<br \/>\nthe struggle to articulate both the infinite principles we are subject to,  and the finite properties of the life we live.<\/p>\n<p>the humble &#8216;small&#8217; gesture small paintings ..  vs the huge primal &#8216;male&#8217; principle of the universe.<\/p>\n<p>the black and white paint echoing the black and white of the video loop ..<\/p>\n<p>the &#8216;pyramid&#8217; gradation of the painting, going to wider yet smaller bands, well you get the picture . . &#8216;rising&#8217; painting in the <strong>new<\/strong> show, 2013.<br \/>\nexcept this time  . . they are in color.<br \/>\nvery &#8216;plastic&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>I think the real beauty of the thing, the small paintings  . . lie in their  size vs the hugeness of the  &#8216;cosmic&#8217; how, that strict non-objective &#8216;spatial&#8217; compositional dynamic   . . takes a leap off the surface and becomes a .. &#8216;dance&#8217;.<br \/>\na thing of the heart.<br \/>\na live wire.<\/p>\n<p>MORE PIX FROM THE NEW MARTIN CREED SHOW . . .
